funny enough the best is (IMHO) cfs2. (until this one comes out that is).

I have no idea how they went so wrong on cfs3, but #2 is pretty good, considering its about what, 4 years old?

If you have an old Mac, you could probably find a copy of Hellcats over the Pacific. Great sim, and my first combat sim! Been downing zeros since I was four!

Go here http://www.hitechcreations.com/htcindex.html and download Aces High for free. The graphics aren't the greatest - after being exposed to IL-2, but the flight models are not bad, and there's a beautiful Essex class CV you can fly off of in the SeaFire, several models of the Corsair, The TBF, and SBD, plus a couple of IJN planes. It's free, unless you want to establish an account an fly online. There's an introductory offer I'm sure, where you can fly online for free for the first 10 hours or so. The carrier is worth the download though.

Thanks for the replies!

I have cfs2 since when it came out, was ok for a while... installed it a a few weeks back... uninstalled it pretty quick http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Will give Aces High a look though.

The strength of CFS2, which has kept it going for so long, is the open arcitecture, allowing concerned individuals create planes, ships and scenery for it. The 1% from AVHISTORY.org are good enough to keep me flying it (I am a professional pilot) unless PF is pretty darn good.

With the downloads and mission builder, it is still a surprisingly good simulation. Will we still be using PF in 2009? I hope it is that good!

Yes, the 1% modders have turned CFS2 from an also ran regarding Flight accuracy to probably the best around. And that includes Forgotten Battles. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The one thing that I couldn't stand about CFS2 or 3 was the point-based damage models. The instant a bullet hit you anywhere, you took damage to something important.

Microsoft never seemed to realize that there are a large number of places on most airplanes where you can shoot them and it won't do significant damage. Like through the wingtips and the middle of the ailerons.

Sucks when you take five 7.7mm rounds spattered around the plane and the game decides you're hemmoraging oil, have no right aileron, and have half normal rudder control.

That's one thing that the 1% guys have improved considerably is the damage profiles, each "box" being refined according to type and amount of damage incured. The "every groundloop or belly landing turns into a ball of fire may be more inherent in the game. great for those who like "fireballs", but not realistic.

Things such as fabric covered control surfaces etc could have quite a few holes in them without degrading their performance much. WWII planes could often take a lot of punishment, unless hit in a few vital areas. Planes without armor or self sealing tanks had much larger "vitals".

I remember Hellcats, damn that game rocked, the planes were flat coloured and unshaded, didnt even have windows, but it still rocked.
An the framerate was completely and utterly flawless, smooth as a pimp.
I hope PF will fill the gap the loss of my apple LC left http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif

Come on!

ACES ON THE PACIFIC is the best and will always be in my mind http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That game really catch my imagination (i was like 7 years old :P). And ill ALWAYS consider the best ever. Truly what a serious flight simmer needed. (Yes, needed...time ago), give it with improved graphics and flight characteristics and ill be happy until the Big Cunch :P

Sad it need that evil XMS memory...
I still miss that "Dynamix" with ****ty PC Speaker sound at the beggining..red font...and that shine! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif

Yes you can run it with the helpful DOSBox program.

Works for me...and it works with Aces Over Europe too!

Fliger, I've tried the 1% aircraft, and damage-wise they behaved the exact same way.

What they NEED to do on those models is create seperate boxes around the individual components, like in IL2. Then they can have those components damaged only when they're actually hit.

The best Pacific theater sim by far was Pacific Air War 1942, Very old game but some of the coolest features that I've ever seen.

The best part of the game was comanding the fleet. You would take control of several of the major battles. Historically or not if you choose. Send the PBYs out from Midway in searh of the Japanese fleet. once the ships are found you send out the attack groups. very very cool. I haven't been able to play it in years. never could get it to run on anything except my old 486dx. obviously not the best graphics given its age but they were light years ahead of Red Baron in those days. That game really gave me the feel of being there. too bad it didn't have internet MMP

I would Agree. I remember targeting the Meatball on the Jap Carriers in my Dauntless with the Flak Exploding Everywhere. That game was pretty cool. I don't remember if it had Avenger's, Hellcats, or HellDiver's though.

PAW 1942 definitely had Hellcats--remember struggling against them.

The biggest irk for me for CFS2 was that no matter where you get hit, your roll rate gets affected, especially flak. FB has a much better damage model.

The fav for me, even though it's not very realistic is Aces over the Pacific. Heck, I switched from Macs to PC just for that one game. K100s, Ki-84s, Shindens, Shidens, Bearcats, Tenzan, Kate, Zero ...dang it was awesome. Dynamix in the good 'ol days.

Sugaki,

I agree whole heartedly with you regarding Aces over the pacific! I am so glad that someone else remembers that sim (well it was not so musch sim and more of a game. I remember talking to a buddy back then and dreamily creating our wishlist for the perfect version of AOP... Better graphics, realistic damage modeling, online co-op and head to head missions, dynamic campaigns....

Sound familiar? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif To say I quiver in anticipation is an understatement.
