Do you have BIOS set to boot from CD? You'll need to do that.

You'll probably have to fdisk/format C: drive too to get Windows to do a full re-install rather than just a repair.

Make sure you get clear before you start all the answers you need, once you're started you wont be able to pop into the forum for more answers 'til you're nearly finished http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Have you tried AdAware and Spybot, they do a good job removing spyware.

If you need to format I'll add just a few points. You can read up on the procedure from comprehensive and concise sources, a lot of sites give step-by-step info on reformatting how-to. If you don't have another PC as Tully said you won't have the web so thoroughly understanding each step and print it out.

If you can, back up any important data onto a CD or floppies.

Make sure you have a proper working start up disk that has FDISK (formatdisk). When Win98 create's one everything necessary is included.

Go into the BIOS, set your disk startup order: floppy - cdrom - harddrive.

Start your PC with the start-up floppy. At the command type fdisk.

At this point make sure you have all the info at hand to take you through the procedure because the next step will ask if you want to erase your entire primary (system) drive. There's not many steps involved but you better be confident, there's no turning back.

In addition to Ad-Aware and Spybot, you might consider another upgrade. I'm kinda cheesed off about even mentioning this upgrade due to believing that basic anti-virus programming should stop anything that can take over your computer in even the smallest way. Unfortunatley, basic, Norton Anti-virus programming won't stop web hijackers and some trojans because they are not considered a "virus". You might want to consider upgrading to Norton Internet Security. You get a discount if you currently have Norton antivirus. Since I've had this installed I've had no web hijackers and its pop-up blocker is so effective, I've not seen a single pop-up until my daughter willfully installed an advertizing bot. I fortunately easily removed this bot with Spybot and now have locked her out of any administrative features. Yes, she's pissed. Unfortunately, it's reached a point where she's just going to have to get over it! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif No programming will cure what you willingly install. so try to remember everything has its limitations. Good luck!

PS/ If you haven't got your windows 98 boot disc floppy, your gonna need it!! If you have a large HDD download the updated 98 floppy or better still, just download the windows ME Boot disk as it supports large HDD's and WORKS with Windows 98 & ME.

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com

And download it.

Why not? Nothing wrong with running fdisk. I used to do it when I would do a reinstall of Win98SE.

Because he asked about how to format and you don't need to run fdisk to do that.

Its quicker just to format,i can't see any need to run fdisk unless he wants to create partitions or summit.

Of course your right there's now't wrong with running fdisk, but why run it if theres no need to do so?

That's odd, every single Win98SE install I ever did was via boot from CD, about a dozen times over a 3 year period. I'd have had trouble doing it any other way, I didn't have (and couldn't be bothered making) boot floppies http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Sorry Tully,

Some vendors provide a bootable 98/SE CD.

My recollection is that ME was the first 'native' bootable non-NT CD.

Did a search on google for it too (I need a life http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif) and that appears to be the experience of others.

There are nicer ways of correcting others gt3uk2001 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Edit:
Now I'm going to have to dig out my old 98SE disk!
