For those of us without C5 can you tell us about the programme?

All I see is Whoopee Goldberg and that man who when he smiles looks like he`s thinking of killing you!

Oh, you meant yesterday? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

It was about a Hurricane over London that spotted a bomber, a JU88 I think, heading for Buckingham Palace. He was outta ammo so decided to ram it! A taran- in England!!

Anyway, he hit the bomber- it went down and his Hurri went down also. The pilot bailed and was there being interviewed about it yesterday!

Even more amazingly, they showed actually footage of the bomber going down after the collision AND the Hurri going down too. It was worth it just to see that!

p.s They were supposedly digging up the Hurri live, but were running outta time and it looked like a washout, so I went flying with the Squad online instead. Anyone know if they did dig it up?

Here's an update by me...

They managed to dig out the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the instrument panel and the control column including the fire button from about 15 feet below ground.A large number of other parts were also found.Buckingham Palace Road in central London was closed for several days to allow for the recovery operation.

During the recovery of these parts, the pilot Ray Holmes was sitting in the same pub a few yards away having a beer just as he did after he bailed out on September 15th 1940 during the Battle of Britain.

When he was shown the battered control column from the Hurricane he seemed more interested in the 'sex-goddess' reporter !

He was a modest individual and seemed embarrassed at being regarded as a hero.

The programme reported that Holmes' Hurricane during it's first attack on the Dornier had its windscreen covered in oil from a flame thrower mounted in the tail of the Dornier that failed to ignite. When his windscreen cleared, he attacked the bomber but found that his ammunition was finished. He then decided to 'remove' the tail of the bomber with his wing. The film of both aircraft falling to earth was amazing.

One crew member of the Dornier (pilot) bailed out but died in hospital from his wounds.

The programme also covered the recovery of wreakage from a Spitfire Mk 14 shot down by an FW190 over Germany in April 1945.

I saw that program the content was good, but the presenters put my teeth on edge. They tried to make it too dramatic and the Pilot Ray Holmes didnt realy seem to care less. Didnt see the end i had to switch off to save my dentist bill.

the pilot in question, ray holmes, wrote a book ,"skyspy". although i read it many moons ago i believe he ferried the 12 303 hurris to archangelsk as well as flying recon in unarmed spits.

Not 100% sure, and i could be mistaking the event for another story (as i often do, too much Green u see!) but im sure the German pilot that managed to bail out and died later in hospital was actually put there by the angry residents of London's boots and fists once he had landed.

But again, i could be wrong.

NaNuK - you could be wrong, but even if you're right, at least the Londoners were given one opportunity to reply in kind to the bombs that were being dropped on their homes.
This was the age of Total War after all!

I also think that Ray Holmes actually ran out of bullets and dived on the Dornier, his left wing cutting the Dornier's rear fuselage (and tailplane) off. Needless to say, the Hurri was a little the worse for wear and Holmes had to bail out.

I think the crew survived!!!!and yes,Holmes did fly in Russia, and later became a Spitfire phto reconaissance pilot, and then a Kings messenger.
