I wrote this in another post, but it diserves a separate because I think it is very important:

THE CHATBOX IS REALLY BAD < < FIX THIS PLEASE

There MUST be a HOTKEY to remove it from the 3d window. This is probably the worst chatbox in any online game I have ever come across..

Suggestions for fix (in order of priority):

1. Fix a HOTKEY to toggle chat on or off

2 Skip the macro, make the font size smaller (or cusomizable in conf.ini) The font size is HUGE and fighter pilots are supposed to have good vision.

3. One hotkey for SAYTEAM and one hotkey for SAYALL

The most annoying thing about IL2FB is that it could be so great, with just some small fixes like the chatbox.

I would not say its "probably the worst chatbox in any online game", but there are som things to fix.

The font size really should be adjustable.

And the crap with numbers! Every time you type in a number at the beginning of a sentence the chat selects a 'saved phrase slot' and either your text misses the first (and most important) number or there already was stored text on that slot and you only post some sort of crap!

There should be an extra sub-menu to save and recall phrases.

By now you can resize the chat window, so why not make it resizable to 0 lines. That would be equal to minimized and if you don't want it you need not to see any chat messages. Think this would only need minor modification.

I have to agree with this thread 100%.

All due respect to Oleg, the chat/messaging system in FB is terrible.

No window needs to be displayed.

I apologize in advance for saying this, as many of you aren't gamers and can't play 2 genres of games at the same time...

But if the IL2 chat system was similar to the following commands found in many first person shooter games utilizing the id Software Quake/2 engine, it would be a huge improvement:

say //sends message to all players
say 'n' //sends message to player_id 'n'
say_host //sends message to host
say_team //sends message to your team only

And the text color could be customizable.
And the text SIZE could be customizable (large/small resolutions)

couldnt agree more about the chatbox, cant type numbers first sucks especially when trying to type quick abbrievated messages or comms ips. If your going to have presets make it a preset keys ctrl shift alt 1-2-3-4-5 etc and editing of the message is in the config.ini or somthing and the map box needs to be movable to fit over the cockpit when dragged while flying in full real servers.

The numbered menu is junk. Nothing more annoying then trying to type any sentence that starts with a number and have that garbage come up.

My desire here is to insure that chatting is possible at all times during game setup... multiple players communicating about the nature of the game they are about to play - before they play it - is nice.

"fighter pilots are supposed to have good vision".

You think we're all youngsters with good vision? Stop living in your own little world, and look at the big picture. This is a game for all of us.

The IL2/FB engine already supports similar commands. It is possible to send a message from the console by typing 'say ALL <message>' or 'say TEAM <message>'. However, this isn't extremely convinient, because the ALL/TEAM must be in capitals (why ?), and the say & say_team pair is the most familiar for many gamers already.

So, I agree with the topic, and especially with that number system. It is easier to 'bind' messages than use quick-slots for them. Besides, just about everybody here uses Roger Wilco or Teamspeak, so having quick-slot messages is pretty irrelevant. Of course, you don't always have your teammates on the online voice chat system, but still - you catch the drift /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Obviously you could read the text I wrote here, so whats your problem? And I should stop living in my own world you say?

Hey ok I can be rude too

WELL BACK TO THE SUBJECT THEN

AS I SAID, OR WROTE I MEANT THAT IT SHOULD BE ADJUSTABLE (IN MAYBE 3 SIZES)

MINI SIZE

MEDIUM SIZE

AND THE CURRENT JUMBO SIZE FOR YOU AND THE REST OF THE WORLD.

/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

The current size is too big for a normal human being with ok vision corrected or noncorrected, thats all I mean. And if I´m wrong about it, then fine let it be as it is. And lets end this topic right here then.

There are methods of seeing better, like glasses.

Thank you

I already made this suggestion before. I suggest the use of hotkeys in general to control the chatbox. In my case, there are 3 lines of chat. Of course it should be possible to edit the font & size via conf.ini. But now the box itself could be better:

1. If I open it (Enter), there should just be the 3 chat lines and 1 "Editbox" where one types the stuff in. Then there should be 3 hotkeys to send the message:
Enter - directly send to ALL
Shift + Enter - directly send to MY ARMY
Ctrl + Enter - let a 10 line selection box appear below the Editbox where one can choose via the numbers like it's now in FB where to send to. Means Enter - type - Ctrl + Enter, #; then it's sent. There could be a conf.ini setting then to confirm the # selection with a last Enter.

2. Preset chat messages shouldn't be shown in the opened chatbox directly. There can be 30 predefined lines then, using Shift, Ctrl and Alt as "drawer". So opening the chatbox, then pressing Shift shows the first 10 presets, Ctrl the next 10 and Alt the last 10. Opening the box, pressing let's say Ctrl+4 opens up the "middle drawer", then it selects the 4th line where one can type a message in or send it via Enter if there's already one. I really prefer this method because with this one, one can start the message with a number. Very often, players start chatting, then there's just bullshyt, because they started with a number and wrecked their presets.

^^I know it's too much to want this for the 1.1 patch. But please consider "adding" it to one of the addons.

Ok willey, sorry I didnt see your post.

Well at least im not alone then.

But let me add something to your ideas.

I belive the best would be if the "system messages" messages like:

Player xx joins the game
player xx brings down yy´s plane

I would wish that these messages was on a separate "collumn" besides the chat.

What I mean was that the chat lines was reserved only for chat messages and a separate line i.e on the right top corner there could be system generated messages.

This way the messages wouldn be lost by all the rubbish like:

Player xx is roasted crispy etc etc

Well you know what i mean.

This idea is great! Simple to use and fully functional!

Guess this should be implemented in the game as soon as possible. The 30 lines stuff is a bit of an overkill in my opinion, the ten lines are enough.

Most of you guys seem to be in squads. I know you use voice comms. Is this that important? I'm just asking. Personally, I turn the chat off.

Hi, Buzz. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I set values in my conf.ini file to essentially hide the CHAT window (apologies to all who try to chat with me online, or get an unintentionally ignored "S!").

I just wish Oleg wouldn't try so hard with the messanging system.

XyZspineZyX

I do the same. I don't want to listen to some snot nosed kid tell how bad he is. Anybody that I really want to talk too, i'll get on the radio with them.

I'm all thumbs typing anyway. Trying to type, and fly at the same time is not an option for me../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Another point that supports Petter_Gul:

I like to fly offline with the online maps when making tracks. Sometimes... okay almost all the time.. I get shot down by the Amazing Super Sniper AAA. SO I refly, and try it again. But the message that I got shot down stays in my screen no matter how many times I refly. I have to completely exit out of multiplayer, and come back into it, to clear the text! And when I'm trying desperately to sink that ship in the lake, having to fly over and over and over to get that perfect track file, it really blows to have that text there.
