FW190 series does very well with short range convergence, I set mine at 250 for both MG and cannon.

If your not close enough to spit on the bastard, your not close enough to blow the bugger to bits.

250 is hardly short range

short range is 150 and lower

Fortunately we can set more than one convergence setting in many planes :>

For anything with a Bigass Gun [or Big *** Gun ;>] I find 100m to work pretty damned well - definitely helps to keep the trajectory of the shell 'straight' out of the barrel. This allows for much easier aiming adjustment at longer ranges too, or I find it so anyway, since you're only taking into account its drop, rather than accounting for its upward arc and then its drop past convergence range.

Anything with wing mounted guns does best around 150-200m, as far as my shooting goes. This is a good compromise on shooting/visibility of target, and it also means good things for dead 6 o'clock shooting, if you have to shoot from there. Shooting at closer than your convergence range often means that your bullets will converge on the nose section of the plane in front of you - not too many planes can stand up to getting pounded by APs through the engine directly.

The planes that do best with long [300-500m] convergence are the P-47 [inner long, outer short], FW-190A [inner long, outer short], and the La5x/La7x [300m]. The peashooter armed planes - 7.62/7.92/.303/.30 - always do better at shorter ranges due to the quite sharp speed drop most of those rounds have over distance.

Obviously, in controlled tests, the shorter range convergence settings do by far the most damage [from APx rounds] and have the highest hit probability. But in realistic terms - meaning, what shots you're actually likely to get on a target - it does differ per plane.

Actually I find i use ranges 200-250 in early war planes. This is often because I fly the I16, Hurricane and lagg3 which tend to be a bit slow in catching up the early war Jerry planes. The longer convergence just gives me that `catch them edge`.

On later warplanes it tends to be 150-200 (100 for cannons on the P39).

250 here on all planes 400 on cannons

I set 250 for every AC I fly.

I remember reading a Korean War ace's comment to the effect that you should put a big wad of chewing gum on the inside of the windshield in line with your crosshairs, and just keep getting closer until the gum starts to melt off the glass from your target's exhaust before you pull the trigger.

The closer you get, the more rounds you can put on the target in the shortest possible time with the greatest possible impact.

As for spitting on him, I imagine it depends on how much muzzle velocity you can generate, coupled with the weight of the round. Chewing tobacco could confer a substantial advantage.

Imho depens so much depending on what plane you are flying.. if one is flying any german plane generally 150-200 meters is the choise.. With Emil's cannons I use 175 meters.. with MK108 150 meters..

With russian sniper weapons 300-400 meters is range where you still can score hits quite easily. Lagg-3 '41 is imo the ideal sniper plane http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I love the last choice. FUNNY

Actually, fliyng the bf 109 we dont need to change the convergence, since all the guns are in the fuselage, so jsut put ut nose on some1 *** and bibi http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It depends a bit on what I'm flying, and what era. Early war, in Polikarpovs or Brewsters, I tend to set it shorter. Late war, when speeds are higher, distances grow a little longer. This goes for normal fighter sweeps. If I'm doing ground pounding, or have gun gondolas for bomber interception, I set the range longer, as much as 400m.

I use 100 to 150..

250 for me on everything... But, I prefer 300 when strafing AAA..

Anyone that brings the enemy down beyond a range of 300 meters is pullin' the Superfly shot.

All the rest of us are just wasting ammo...

ZoD you still awake? FYI, zod we have a matchup on sunday...
