View Full Version : Luthier, Is Pacific Fighters being shelved by UBI?

I had to come out and ask this.

There are lots of rumblings about this. Not so much here, but on other forii, and among many regular FB flyers, and people I have spoken to who attended E3.

A sense of unease is settling in here.

All it will take is a word. Yes or No.

Thanks.

If not, what's next? Another European theater sim? Geez, so how many times can you repackage Luftwaffe crates and re-release them under another title? ZZZZZZZZZZZ

Anyone remember that bit in Alien 3 with the warden and his rumour control speech? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Sometimes rumours preceed the truth other times they are well, just rumours.....

"As weaponry, both were good, but in far different ways from each other. In a nutshell, I describe it this way: if the FW 190 was a sabre, the 109 was a florett, or foil, like that used in the precision art of fencing." - G√ľnther Rall

No it's not Takasaki, I wish it were. And I don't mean to be the buzz killer. I want PF as much as anyone here.

But I cannot ignore what my intuition is telling me either.

Maybe Luthier, et al, are just busy slaving away on the game, I don't know. But after the LOMAC debacle, I'm willing to bet that flight sims have left a pretty sour taste in UBI's corporate mouth.

Oleg at least knows how to put snap views in a sim. I got the LOMAC demo, realized that I couldn't do snap views, and threw it away and never looked back. If they forgot THAT, what other problems must it have?

Course I have little interest in jets anyway, but if it had been decent I would have bought it anyway to mess around.

Valid question.

It seems this forum was created WAY too early. I would have preferred to speculate as to Luthier's secret project, and gotten the forum once something could be shown to back the hype.

I ran straight to this new forum the day it opened and have been an active member... oh wait, no I haven't.

I'm not saying PF will never happen. I am saying, the timing is ****. Its not a good biz move at all.

Maybe they'll pull something out, but if I were 1C, I'd be on BoB.

There's no point people getting their panties in a bunch without any hard facts. Nobody knows anything at this stage, including those on the inside.

The problem is that since Luthier has chosen to not communicate with anyone it leaves him wide open for speculation.

Come on, Luthier - step up and SORT IT OUT!

I'll just be glad when we start getting concrete info about PF. If it wasn't for Burnin's (and a few others') E3 posts, we'd know nothing. I can understand marketing practices, but this whole "zipped-lip,hush-hush" policy is getting rather silly. We don't even have a planelist yet. Most of what we know in regards of planes has been gleaned from screenies. I could understand if this was a year or two before the projected release date, but it's not.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I'm hoping against hope myself, but went to the UBI site and PF is NOT listed in their list of PC games anymore. I did a search and entered "Pacific Fighters" and the result came back NO GAME FOUND. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/354.gif [update: whooops I was logged in to the UK site, the USA site still has PF on their game list]

The PF site is still up though, but just the opening page. I wish some official word one way or another is given soon.

Oleg et team is probably busy on the BoB at the moment.

And from what I can see it's because you started rumors about this in other forums based mostly on "I've got a bad feeling about this..."

If you have something concrete present it. If not this is just a trolling thread.

Oleg not at the E3 booth for Pacific Fighters? He was, I talked to him and saw him there.

At this point, speculations of the game being axed seem pretty baseless. If Ubi was going to axe it, they wouldn't spend the time to fly developers over to demo the game.

Just rumors at this point. Plus Ubi's doing pretty decent in its financial results so they wouldn't be in any rush to consolidate their assets and trim their line-up.

Since when does El spam?

I have been around here a long time (and not as Chuck_Older) and I can't think of a thread in which he hasn't been at worst, civil.

I wish I could say I'm surprised at some of the responses he is getting, but sadly I cannot. El has been an adult in any exchange I have had with him, or in any thread I have seen him discuss anything with someone else. He's asking a question in a mature manner and folks here think it's spam? Seems like a case of small minds to me. That and a healthy case of not reading his posts.

In my relatively short time here, I have not seen El to be a spammer either, but stating that in other forums, and among FB players, and people who attended E3 gives his statement absolutely no validity.

Post some links to these "other forums" and tell us who attended E3 that thinks PF is dead. Of the several posters on these forums that attended E3, none of them professed anything negative about their encounters with Luthier, Oleg, and co.

So, I will have to say, with straw man sources, this thread is trolling. El can easily fix that, and he needs to do so.

4) If i see one more personal attack i`ll ban without warning.

Thanks Ivan -

Some people want to know whats going on with PF... whats the problem with that?

We had gotten accustomed to seeing Luthiers posts here almost daily.. then nothing for..2weeks?..

Some of his co conspiritors were also wondering where he went.. that raises concerns among the clientele.

Just because someone poses a question, doesn't mean he should be targeted freely.
One can oppose a viewpoint without personal attacks. I love these boards because of all the different takes people have on a given subject and the humour is generally very good.

I'm sure that when Luthier or Oleg or whoever it is finally responds to this thread it will be worth money to read. I love 1c - I have faith that PF will happen - I just thought it was time to ask this question so I thank Elaurens for asking it.. Whats wrong with wondering aloud? Sure some people will embellish the truth or indicate some kind of 'insider' knowledge, so what.. just read it and consider the source. There are two reason why I think this thread generates such strong reactions.

As I read the first post I believed it was asking a question to which the poster already, for the most part, knew the answer to but was looking either to be the first to guess the new fate of PF or was looking for some reaction out of boredom (trolling).

Second, it asked the one thing we did not want to hear and the defensive reaction is to poke back to make sure it doesn't really happen that way.

I don't think he was trolling. It is a legitamite question. Especially considering how out of the ordinary it was for the developer to release a forum a half-year before the game is actually out. Luthier was very involved in the forum and has been quiet lately. This probably just made Elaurens uneasy.

Any other dorks like me who have followed the game industry a bit over the last few years know how easy it is for a game to be canceled, even at the last moment. However, I don't think this sim will be canceled. You are probably reading too much into Luthier's silence.

Ya, just read a thread over at the Lock On site. UbiRazz(UK Community Manager) says "Ubisoft will be there demonstrating Pacific Fighters with a very special guest: Oleg Maddox. Oleg will be around for all of the aviation show to demonstrate the brand new game to everyone and, of course, to answer any questions you may have. Make sure you turn up to be one of the very first people to see the game running!" ...would that be an actual fully functional running game? Don't sound like it's been shelved. Like to see just exactly what does get demonstrated at this show, same stuff as at E3?

"On the 19th-20th June 2004, Blackpool will play host to the biggest event of its kind in the UK, the National European FlightSim Aviation Show. Ubisoft will be there demonstrating Pacific Fighters with a very special guest: Oleg Maddox. Oleg will be around for all of the aviation show to demonstrate the brand new game to everyone and, of course, to answer any questions you may have. Make sure you turn up to be one of the very first people to see the game running!"

About that 'brand new' statement, it should be known that BoB will be really brand new. PF is just a refurbished FB with different resources as planes and maps, and some new features as carrier ops.

Why shouldn't they release it? Since it does use a proved engine, it's far cheaper than a totally new thing, thus increasing the profit chances.

It's BoB what I see in danger... only a fear, just ignore me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Yeah, what they said earlier.

Ubisoft will be at the FlightSim show next week with Oleg demonstrating Pacific Fighters so I can confirm it's not been shelved.

If you're at the show come say hi to me, I'll be hanging around the Ubi bit http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Looks like a great opportunity to find out what the big dust-up is about.

Maybe Luthier will be there as well? or maybe if he is not there - that will tell a story too... Am I the only one that finds it interesting that Oleg is mentioned as the demonstrator and there is NO mention of Luthier?

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

His abscence lately, no doubt, has to do with getting prepared for this show.

Sorry I've been absent for 5 days. Was woking the Gold Cup Vintage Race at Virginia Internationl Speedway... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It was never my intention to cause such a "tempest in a teacup" (Hayate in a saki bowl?). I was truely curious about things that I had heard. I also asked at Combat Sim's forum because I knew I would't get flamed there, not to start a rumour campaign.

To those who read my posts, and understood them I thank you for your replys, especially to those of you directly connected with UBI/1c in whatever manner.

So Chuck_Older, who are you anyway???

And the rest of you lot...

As you were!

First let me apologize for a post in this thread which I made then later wished I hadn't - you may have not seen it but I will apologize anyways.

Second I don't want to go back to the way I was - I would rather grow a little and come back a little better, a little wiser.

Third - Have a good day El...
