Japanese WWII photos do often lack on quality, even if they're b/w. Well, I did some scanning job of some good real color pics taken out of "The Japanese Army Wings off the WWII". The upper 4 pics are showing a Ki-45KAI, whereas the lower 2 are showing some Ki-44-IIc. Tomorrow I'll add some more of that color stuff.

They seem to be colorized. True?

The Ki-45 shots seems to be as originally captured with color film. About the Ki-44 I don't know. That strange cloud/splitter effects of the colors could either has its origin by overall bad film quality or afterward coloring.

Those are from the book "The Japanese Army Wings Of The Second World War".

The photos are by Shunkichi Kikuchi, an official photographer for the JAAF, they are color photos, not hand colored or "colorized".

This is an extremely rare book in the US.
If any of you ever find a copy, buy it!
It was published by the Light Corporation, Tokyo in 1972.

There are around 240 out of the 4000 or so photos that Mr. Kikuchi took during WW2. Also, there are some great color plates of JAAF color schemes on various aircraft.

I found my copy at a gun show for $25.

Excellent pics! I'll try to keep an eye out for this book.

But here's a stupid question....

What's the deal with the "58" on the nose cone of the Ki-45? It looks like to me, when the cone was placed back on the aircraft, the "58" would be sideways. What gives?

I wish I had a scanner.....

There are a LOT of photos of the Ki 45 in the book. One series shows a Ki45 with 2 H0-5 20mm cannon mounted to fire from the top of the fuselage at a 45 degree angle up and forward. These can also be seen in the top color photo here.

Also many many pics of airfield operations, re-fueling, maintenance, gun sighting on Ki61s!. Japanese Army fuel trucks and "Hucks" starter trucks. Pretty cool stuff.

Necrobaron, that's the same thing I asked myself. Note that the number 58 seems to be pierced by the red arrow, maybe a symbolized link to the duty that unit had!!??
