Erm... I tried out the Spit and the Hurricane the other day in FB and I was disturbed by the sound of the engine... As far as I know the Hurricane Mk I & II along with the Mk V Spitfires in FB were powered by the RR Merlin.

Now having been brought up practically at the end of the runway of RAF Biggin Hill I watched and heard these planes fly over my house several times a year and could identify those wonderful engines.

Thing is the sound of these engines is completely different in FB... or do they sound different from within the cockpit? Anyone got any explanations or am I going a bit mutton...

[URL=http://www.gazzamataz.com

I hear you... pun intended... I dont know what they sounded like from within the cockpit.. But in light of the fact that the external sounds are porked... I would assumed that the internals are no better... I have heard several merlins over the years... they have a very distintive sound... And FB does not sound anything like it

IL2/FB Merlin sounds are Mower Power...

but not as bad as MS CFS-series where they offer CESSNA http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif sounds for Merlin powered planes...and in CFS3 that Typhoon sounds even more pathetic...
But in general..il2/FB sounds are **** imho..
I guess i've stated this before: I'm an official IL2 Soundwhiner... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

The engine sounds generally are weak in my view, though the guns are okay...

Shame we can't get Mea****er to do a sound pack for FB http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Edit - for some bizarre reason, the forum software has decided that the words 'Meat' and 'Water' combined should be censored. Bizarre !

The only plane IMO that sounds even halfway correct is the P-47. And even then it's not nearly right. I do hope they can add correct engine sounds for BoB, it makes it that much more emmersive when you can distinguish actual aircraft by their engines. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have followed the forum for awhile and this comes up time to time. I have a Audigy2 with logitech surround sound 7:1 speakers system. I have EAX enabled and get the best sounds I have ever heard in a flight sim hands down. It sounds perfect. What sound setups do you guys have? I was just wondering if that's what is missing because I get GREAT sounds from this sim. I am very confused about this http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

What they are saying, and I agree, is that the engine sounds are not accurate. They do not sound like the real engine that they represent. Although I agree with you in that the sound QUALITY is very good. All engine sounds were better in IL-2 and certainly more individual.

I dont fly the "Long awaited" Spit alot due to the inacurate sound, surely something between FW190A5 and a TB3 engine would have sounded better.

Yep, the sound quality rocks - I have an Audigy 1 with the breakout box and Creative 5.1 surround speakers.

It's the fact that most of the engine sounds in the game feel fairly generic - a Merlin sounds nothing like the sound attached to the Spit Vb's for example.

It's only a minor whine though - certainly, the sound quality is good enough to judge roughly what the engine is doing without looking down at the gauges most of the time

There are only a few engine syths in the game (note they aren't pre-recorded, they are generated using samples). I can think of:

- Allison inline
- Merlin inline
- Yak (Klimov?) inline
- and a bunch of Radial engines

They all are generated using the same sets of samples, the system is kind of limited in creating a complex sound.

The thing is that we get this post several times a month and several times a month its pointed out by people who have heard the official response on why engine sounds aren't specifically like the real thing. We aren't as upset or even motivated about the Klimov engine since 99% of you have never heard a recording of one (I still haven't) but the Spitfire Merlin engine most people have heard in a movie (with a professionally done sound recording) or seen fly past them in either a Spitfire or a Lancaster or a Mustang.

The fact is that they can't recreate that sound. Not yet. But one day maybe.

RR and Allison's can be put in quite easily but indeed, not much ppl have heard Klimov engines irl..

I've heard somewhere that the Klimov was derrived from Hispano-Suiza engines or even license built but I cannot confirm this since i've lost my source...
But..if this is true there should be recordings of it, since alot of planes in the ETO flew with Hispano-Suiza engines and there were a few real Klimovs here too..the Normandy Niemen regiment took alot of Yaks back to France...

It's just a big "TOO BAD" that alot of efford was put into realism in il2 but that the sounds lack a bit..still it's 300% better than in all CFS series...those are not even worth it to put speakers on your pc...pathetic engines and the gunsounds almost made me cry of agony...
I have redone ALL those sounds for all aircraft and now Spits sound like Spits and so on...

In Jane's Attack Squadron the sounds are quite accurate on some planes....st00pid game only refuses to work on my pc properly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I just take the sounds IL2 and FB have to offer because when i'm entirely immersed with the game, it all sounds fine http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The best engine sounds of any flight sim have to be on WWII fighters. They all have their own distinct sound. Merlins sound like merlins and so forth, the 109 even has that whistle that was particular to it in the fly by. I used to hit the fly by key and listen to it over and over, sounded great. AU_Mav made some gunsounds for the game that were nothing less than spectacular. Take any fighter with cannons and just barely turn you speakers up and you shook the floor. If you would want to listen to them the dload used to have wave samples with it that you could listen to but I'm not sure if it's available for dload at WWII fightes anymore.

Why not post in the Oleg's Ready Room as a petition. I'm sure if enough people respond we might could get the developement team to fix the Spit sounds.

I wonder if the sounds are different on various systems. Sound cards vary a bit, and synthesized sound is an imitation at best. Maybe the ripping groan of a Merlin can't be reproduced.

Whatever the problem, I have to agree. I have a CD recording of a IX Spit and Merlin at a warbird show in England several years ago. FB's sound is a good effort, but off the mark IMO.

Well I think what they did was take a briggs and stratton lawn mower engine and tried to recreate that. As the sound of the engines in this game sound like a runaway lawnmower engine on steroids. They are quite pitifull
