Just saw this on the local 8 o'clock news...

A blind (yes) pilot to fly above the UK the coming five days http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
http://members.home.nl/lil.labbit/blindpilot.jpg
Steve Cunningham (hope I spelled that correct http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

Guy wants to prove himself :O lol
For security reasons a second pilot is on-board .

Good luck Steve I'd say...

Lil_Labbit, I still don't see the difference between him and the standard commercial pilot! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That is truly amasing! Well done for him.

Over a year ago before the forum mirgation and a name change I posted about a blind neighbor boy who wanted to be a FB pilot. After posting on his efforts to become a virtual pilot with the help of myself and his father giving him vocal cues some of the more braindamaged members made comments about child abuse and his parents asked me to never post his name here again.

I never made mention of my little buddy again on here but he and his dad still fly almost every day here and their own home as they were converted to purchase FB and then AEP.

Blind from birth and currently has wracked up 17 kills flying his beloved Hurri..Dark Sky 6. People like him and Mr Cunningham simply awe me. S'

Udidtoo - That's great (your buddy flying) - there are a lot of morons online sadly enough...

I was thinking. How did he manage to take off?

Then another thought came to me. How will he land without killing himself or others?

When the leash on his seeing eye pilot gets tense, its time to flare.

I don't think take-off would be so difficult for him. He has verbal intsruments and a co-pilot just in case. He probably hears and feels his speed and since he has no vision his other senses will be stronger than usual.
I would be most amazed at how clear he must have to keep his mind. I imagine he is constantly making mathematical calculations with alt, speed, and compass. I still get lost from time to time in the FB virtual world. That amazes me,.... along with landing. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Just curious, when you say blind, do you mean blind blind? Or is he someone who has been declared legally blind without being fully blind as in can't see anything.

he also holds an offshore powerboat record, and he drove a dodge viper at 150 odd a few years back. this one has taken him 4 years to get ready for tho. think about it tho, audio triggered ILS gates, verbal readout of instruments, some kind of audio slip indicator- no reason he cant do it. presumably the other pilot does nothing, and just grabs the controls on the offchance everything goes to hell, like really terrible weather, or a failure of the audio instrumentation, or an engine failure that demands an immediate landing without any aids, that sort of thing. no reason he cant fly without the co-pilot touching the controls tho.

So technically this guy has an Instrument rating. I'm not bashing the guy by any means, but he's only knowing what the controls say right? It's the same as a pilot training for their instrument rating and wearing foggles.
