Why does the AI or how does the AI fly so damn fast after take off and why don't they fly in formation? I spend the mission trying to catch up. Totally ruins the emersion feel. This should be fixed as I am not the only one to mention it.

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, bios 1008
Nvidia nForce 2, Ultra 400 chipset
Antec 430w PS

What is your rad setting?

Are you using combat RPM. What plane are you currenty flying? Does your plane have manual supercharger and mixture?

Also note that the AI does cheat, particularly in acceleration. The amount that it cheats varies from plane to plane. This occurs due to the AI plane using a simplified version of the players flight model, in which all the performance specs are better than the player flown version.

As a rule, you will not be able to keep up to the AI planes when they take off and climb. A workaround is to engage the autopilot, which will allow you to keep up.

I prefer to be the leader or, if I must be a wingman, takeoff first and blast the buggers on the runway. Its the only way to be sure they won't steal your kills, or run into you, later in the mission.

your problem is that you are trying to climb to early.

Match their speed, and then begin your climb to their alt.

Complex engine management really gives you an edge, too.

And remember, they are PERFECTLY trimmed.

Any bobble or offset to your joystick or rudders and you're slower. Likewise, they are always perfectly trimmed for altitude.

Buggers make me jealous, as I'm NEVER trimmed for level flight.

I always thought it was because they were lighter.

I have found that with AEP the AI wingman often can't keep up with you in a hard climb when you go full blast everything you got.

That's been my experience too. But Fennec's solution look's to be more fun.

Ok you mean I really don't SUCK that bad that I can barely keep up till they get halfway to target? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I liked the way they did it in "RedBaronII" The leader would circle the field untill all planes were together. Was this something that wasn't done in WWII? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I almost never ( notice I said "almost" ) have any trouble at all keeping up with the AI in this sim. Believe me it can be done. The secret is to not try and catch up on the climb part too aggresively and try more to keep up wit the speed part. In other words keep your nose down, climb but not too hard. I think people are trying too hard to get the altitude of the other planes and try so hard to get that altitude, it drains their speed. Make it a shallow cruise climb that will keep up your speed. Using your trim to do this. Also very critical is not to wait too long before you take-off after the plane in front of you, for obvious reasons. I have only had one mission since FB came out one year ago where I could not keep up. And it was in the recent AEP addition. A mission where I was flying Spitfire in Crimea. But other than that I can do it every time. You name the plane and I will send you a track of a mission where I am number four in a flight and will keep up. Not saying this to be a smart-a$$ "see I told you so" type, but more to help. Because if you watch my tracks maybe you'll learn how I do it. In some, if not most cases I can pull into number four formation position before number 3 gets into formation!!!

Yes, it was standard for the flight leaders in most air forces of most countries to loiter until the rest of the flight had joined up, before heading off to the mission objective. It only makes sense. But it's not modelled in this sim.

I do all my offline flying in simple engine management ( never mind why at this time ) but I can still keep up with AI. It can be done and easily in almost every case, see my earlier post. It don't matter if you use CEM or SEM, but yes CEM will let you go a hair faster. Still SEM gives you plenty of speed to catch up.

The AI cheats: this was always a big issue in the original Il-2 Sturmovik, but it's much less pronounced in FB, at least that I've noticed since I got AEP. But I'm still in the kid in a candy store stage, so my judgement may be a little clouded.

I also noticed that MY a/c's performance was degraded whenever an AI 'Ace' was in the vicinity in the old Il-2, even when I was assigned to be his wingman. I haven't seen any indications of this in FB, but the day is yet young...

cheers
