Starting to brush up on the various Spitfire Mark IXs and got confused. So which has most confusing version numbering convention? I think the British win by a wide mark...(no pun).

Spitfires by a wide wide margin. So many variations, armament types....as Gibbage has beaten into my head "there is no one standard Spitfire". There's plenty of different versions.

Probably stems from the fact that production had to continue to modifications were made on the fly with as little disruption as possible.

Yeah, things went to hell after the MK V, where the a, b, or c referred to the wing armament. Problem was, there was no OFFICIAL rationalization of designations, unlike the late-war Messerschmitts, it was all a matter of opinion. People just made it up as they went along, and each Wing or Squadron designated their aircraft model as they saw fit.

...we may have stumbled onto the root cause of the degradation of English as a precise form of communication here...

cheers
