I spent some time figuring out the details of the HE111 bomb-run but now I find it really easy to do, since it's automated to the max.
I always enjoyed bombing in the TB 3 since you get to do it by "gef├╝hl". The greatest problem with bombing is the fairly short distance from which you can spot the targets, especially the Heinkel needs a good long bomb-run, so I normally set all parametres on the bombsight right after takeoff so I only have to do slight adjustments during the run itself.

There I was reading a thread about manual bombing and I end up with a new idea for my daily sandwich filling! What a forum! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I am hooked on it also right now. Bombing, not the tuna. I think it kicked in when I got my first bullseye. It can be heartache sometimes, all that work and then wide right by 30 yards. Makes me say bad things and fly home fast so I can try again.

I've made a table for converting IAS to TAS.

The table is fully automated, it lists for altitudes of up to 4000m with increments in 50m and speed increments in 10km/h. It is a far more precise table then the one supplied on the PDF document on the FB CD. You can easilly modify the table yourself. The bombs fall spot-on to altitueds up to 3500m, if everything is perfect. If you go above that altitude, the precision is decreasing gradually. Above 4500, most targets cannot be seen anymore, except for large cities and industrial areas. (at least, not on my system http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Give me a PT with your Email adress if you want the IAS/TAS table.

Flying bombers is definitely one of the least explored aspects of this sim that can add many different aspects to it. I fly bombers on occassion and find it particularly rewarding when i can hit the target, vector home and land successfully. Shot up or not.

Does anyone have a beginners guide to bombing i.e. using the bombsight, etc.? I love the He-111, but end up going low over the target and bombing by eye..

its to many keys to fly the bomber alone gunner positions and setting up the bombsite to be exact. I usually set it for 3000 and around 280 on the ground.

I wish they had an auto airspeed and altitude feature for bomb sites especially for the scripted dogfight servers.

I havent seen anyone in a he111 since the bf110 came out

Here is a thread I dug up which I used for the bombing training

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=574101182&r=785103182#785103182

Be sure to take notes and follow the directions carefully. In no time you should be able to write your sweethearts name on a bomb and send it to enemy with love.

You can find my beginners guide/tips for bombing here: http://www.mnstarfire.com/ww2/il2/documentation/CuttersBombingGuide.html

Hope that helps!

Hitting a target from 7000m+ is one of the most challenging, and, when you do it, satisfying things in this game.

AHHA! SEE! Now you know what it is that us Bomber pilots live for.

The sooner we get properly working heavies in this or the next sim or even an seperate brand new game as designed and put out by 1c/Maddox Games/Etc., the better everyone will feel. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Yep, Snuffy hit the nail on the head.

It's a whole different experience flying a heavy, then setting yourself up for a sucessful bomb run, all the while worrying about flak, enemy AC, do ya have enough fuel, etc.

You usually REALLY will end up counting on those guys flying fighter escort, and they, end up caring a little more about the bombers, once they know that real guys (maybe squadmates) are flying them.

Immersion factor goes through the roof! Hands sweat, and the thought that you may blow the mission...well it makes ya pucker.

Imagine all of that in FB or a Oleg 1C created flight sim!

I can't wait.

Well i know one my brethern in the 380th BG enjoy there bomb runs. I have no idea how those boys are so accurate with their eggs, whether they are in the He-111 or even the no cockpit B-17!. But for those of you that asked, one of ours guys, Tug, took the time to write up a great bombing tutorial. you can find it at www.310thvfs.com, (http://www.310thvfs.com,) click on guides then bombsight. Its a really in depth description and it has certainly helped me become more accurate. While your looking at the guide, take a look around at the website and let us know what you think. S!

Can you still see a, let'say a troop concentration, at 7000m in FB? We shoud really have some kind of a zoom option in the current bombsights. Large industrial area's are much better to see and can be bombed with great accuacy but, in FB, you just don't see any vehicles when you reach a certain altitude.

Heh, I've seen this too. Recently did a mission where a flight of He111s set out to knock out artillery in a small village. I couldnt see anything so I tried external cameras and found just one artillery gun to be destroyed.

Very funny.

I love setting up bomb runs in QMB with many escorting and opposing fighters looming around. Looks great and really adds to the tension. Have to do it right as there will be no chanceof turning for a second run. That said, i'm pretty bad witt the bombsite. Can hit a runway but thats about all.

Lots of fun to be had defending your bomber from maurauding fighters though. At the moment i'm attempting to build my own BoB style blitz campaing with Ju 88's, 87's and He 111's being the main attractions. would love a flyably ju-88 BTW.

Admittedly, tactical targets are very difficult to see without using the external camera to get a ground reference point, but they aren't what high altitude bombing is all about.

Lebvel bombing always looked like hard work so I put of learning how to do it. but reading this thread got me interested again. I had a look at the excellent guide at http://www.310thvfs.com/ and also printed off Platypus's IAS/TAS charts and then started a He-111 career. First mission I missed by about 200 metres (from 4500 metres and 270 kph) but that was because I left the final minor adjustments until too late and was a bit rushed. But this is great fun indeed! I'll try another mission later. Thanks to all those who have produced guides, ther really are a great help. I'll be reading some more tonight.

Generally as a rule of thumb High level bombers were not used to attacking troop concentrations.

One example of this was during the following days after D-Day invasion and the Allies had made it to St. Lo where they got hung up. General command thought that a package delivery by the Heavies would dislodge the opposition, unfortunately the drop was off and the USAAF got some of their own couterparts on the ground in and around St. Lo. Since then 8th command never used the heavies from any altitude to attack troop placements.

The mediums and single seaters were assigned to do that since they were low level attackers.

The heavies were relegated to taking out targets of concern for the carrying out of the war. Industry, Rail, Bridges, Airfields, Berlin, etc. Something with some size and accessable merit to the opposition.

I fly the He-111 often and love it. I normally bomb from 4000-5000m. A few hours ago I did an unescorted raid on a russian airbase online, blew up 7 static planes, 2 trucks and a AAA in a single flight http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif. The only down side is it was a 45 minute flight from takeoff to landing http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif. Still fun though.
