Skins are one of the many favorite features in this sim that I enjoy. Thanks to http://il2skins.com/, I have collected a genre' of skins since becoming an addict to IL2. Thanks to all the artists and hobbiest that made them all possible http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

Question: is it cool or not to fly online with skins enabled?? I know that some servers on HL don't allow it, because of lag issues....although some say it is not due to skins but to the users ping connection. please, someone enlighten me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

i almost never have a default skin on

always custom

just go to controls & turn off skin D/L if you dont want your bandwidth tied up

This is something that varies from user to user. I prefer to have them on but others prefer them off. When I host, I leave them on and if a user wants them off he/she can turn them off on their end. If host turns it off then it is off for all players. Skins do make spawn stutters worse at times and they can add some lag but the skins are worth it in my oppinion.

Another option is to look for 512x512 skins. They take up less bandwidth. Some of the skins on il2skins include a '512' version. A little less detail but a possible solution to the defaults or custom question.

Because I'm such a nice guy I've converted all my skins to 512x512 using IrfanView - makes things go a little smoother online & you won't notice because I fly so FAST... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

No really - just see what the host says & let that be your guideline. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

(Dio Chrysostom "Discourse" 4.77-78)

If the host says skins off - the I try to respect that.

Otherwise, I'll go with 1024 x 1024 skins.
Individual clients can choose not to have skins on.

Off topic:
Hosts should design their conditions (icons on or off, plane selection) to allow for identification of freind and foe without recourse to markings.

I've given up correcting my own spelling
Unless I've corrected it here

Well skins seem to create lag and stutters amongst other things and I never use them online.

The respected server GreaterGreen recomend people to avoid skins on their server.
read their post about lag and stutters and U'll know why.
