Hi all,

Earlier I sent the beta of the new IL2-MAT Manager version (v1.40) to the beta testers. Hopefully there won't be too many bugs and I will be able to release the new version in the near future. I have just revised all of the MAT files again to include McWolf's latest lighting effect parameters. It has taken a lot of work to incorporate the new options and create/edit all of the new and existing MAT files. This has neccesitated many changes to the program code and I wish to wait whilst the beta testers thoroughly tesdt things out before making it available for release. In the meantime here's a picture showing the new features to be introduced in the new version.

http://www.leigh-kemp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Il2-MAT_MANAGER_V1_40_Coming_Soon_Opt.jpg

My thanks to McWolf, Extreme-One and the beta testers for their tireless efforts to improve the markings.

Best Regards

Hi, I've got an interesting problem with your program. I downloaded IL2 Mat Manager and updated it to 1.33, paying careful attention to the instructions, but now whenever I start IL2, my graphics settings and joystick settings are reset to defaults (even after I went back through il2 setup). Also, the Mat manager's features don't work, and the only way to turn off my game is to ctrl+alt+delete it. What did I do wrong?!

Hi Resident_Jock,

This is a long shot, You didn't install the updated MAT Manager .exe and the program's updated conf.ini to your IL-2 FB folder instead of your IL2-MAT Manager folder by any chance ?as the conf.ini supplied with IL2-MAT Manager won't work as the conf.ini supplied with FB. They are two entirely seperate files for two different programs. My default installer path for the program files update is for C:\Program Files\IL2-MAT Manager so it is unlikely unless you changed the default path to your IL2-FB folder when installing the program update. This is only a suggestion but it would explain your problems.

Will the new version include improved documentation? I've been sticking with IL2Stab because Mat Manager is so disorganized.

I'm sure Mat Manager is a great piece of software, but the way I see it, the software is useless if the developer can't be arsed to write proper documentation and create a website that doesn't make my eyeballs bleed.

BTW, the screenshots look fantastic. If I get some spare time to trial-and-error my way through Mat Manager I may take a shot at writing some docs for it.

Excuse me cosmokart,

I take exception at your remark that the developer (me) "can't be arsed to write proper documentation and create a website that doesn't make my eyeballs bleed."

I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on my website and many many hours doing the documentation not to mention the hundreds of pounds that it has cost me to do so or the contless hours that I've spent on my artwork and the program. I'm sorry if you don't like them. Remember that you haven't paid 1 cent for the thousands of hours that I've put in. If I "couldn't be arsed" as you so idiotically put it then I wouldn't have spent thousands of hours working on my stuff. If you haven't got anything worth writing them please keep your negative criticism to yourself. Many others have complimented on the documentation, please don't be so sarcastic as to offer to write documentation. Maybe if you spent more time getting involved with supporting the hobby than sniping sarcastically at those that do so your comments would carry more weight. In the meantime please fell free to stick your comments where the sun doesn't shine.

Well, I suppose I won't be downloading Mat Manager after all.

I like the idea of making insignia have the same level of shineyness as the rest of the airplane. That's really good stuff.

As for "thousands of hours", well, you could have fooled me. Perhaps out of those thousands of hours you might have organized the documentation a bit more nicely. After all, you seem to have so much free time.

FYI I just spent 40 hours over the last weekend alone programming and producing new files for the new version and I'm very tired. If you think my comments are harsh then I'm sorry but it's the like of you and your inept and crass opinions that make me wonder if it's worth it.

Cosmokart,

What about the instructions don't you understand ?. I couldn't make it much simpler, all you have to do is follow the diagrams and spend a bit of time following the instructions. If your the type that just expects things to work without investing any time or effort in setting them up correctly then your wasting your time.

Well it has taken thousands of hours to produce my stuff whether you care to believe it or not. There are many who understand the effort and time that I have put into my work.

That's my final word on the matter you can troll away till hell freezes over, don't expect any further responses.

Make up your mind.

1) The instructions should say clearly right up front what Mat Manager does. We don't need a self-congratulatory video with melodramatic music. What we DO need is a simple 1-page writeup that explains how the sim uses MAT files and how your software fiddles the files to make the sim look nicer.

2) I won't aplogize for being blunt, so here it comes directly: The website has piles of crap scattered all over the place. It takes a magnifying glass to figure out where to download the various required files.

3) AFAIK it requires three files to work properly, the 1.01 Mat Manager, the 1.33 update, and optionally that other guy's thing that fixes adjusts the shiny-ness.

4) Upon unzipping those 2/3 downloads one is left with several piles of miscellaneous files. You have to run 3 different installers, including sevaral uses of the hideous .EXE extension WinZip self-extractor. Nobody in their right mind runs those things. Please provide a proper installer, or leave it as a regular non-executable zip archive.

5) The provided documentation is in MS Word format. Many users don't bother to install MS Orifice on their gaming rigs. Please, start by writing documentation in PLAINTEXT before bothering with proprietary formats.

6) Once up and running, one is immediately presented with an enormous busyboard looking thing, with 999 little buttons. It looks like it was designed by a ferret on crack. Put down the VBasic manual before you hurt somebody.

Here is this guy, Aces...spends loads of time designing something for us to play with and to make our sim look nice...gets no renumeration whatsoever...and folks too lazy to read the docs (using a FREE MS Word doc viewer off of the MS website) still take cheap shots at him.

Do you ever rest!? I look forward to each new improvement! I do have one ( probably dumb)question - on current "menu" chart I have switched off to black & while letters & numeral on American aircraft yet in regular game play the black numbers keep showing up...I think I know why, but would you please explain? Ditto on how to make the right period American Stars show up on aircraft....are these options only good for mission planning or something?

I have to agree here. I went to the site looking to download the program, and was assaulted by aggrivating animated gifs, and a confusing download section that left me saying, "Screw it. The game loooks good enough."

Why can`t you make your point politely, pointing the things you see that could be improved, rather than bashing the poor chap down who`s obviously gone to a lot of work to produce this FREE product?

Are you this rude to people face to face when appraising their work or just on the faceless net?

IMO he posted what needs to be done. Seriously, I had a helluva time finding my way around the site and the readme's. And I'm sure the program is excellent but I still can't get the damn thing to work (not that it's Aces' fault. I don't know what the hell is wrong and I have to reinstall IL2 to correct it, it seems)

Also, a request. Could you make the next version in a complete form that requires no pre-patching, so that we don't have to spend half an hour deleting all the files from each subfolder like 3 times? Just a thought...

The reason that the complex for the software menu is that the TGA files paths are very complex to be moded.
Some TGAs are in ../decal/..
Some are in /Russian/ or /Germany/
Some are in /Blue/ or /Red/
There are also some subfolders
......
Now maybe tree structure is a better way. We also wish ACE could find a better way to make the software more interface friendly.

Now I only mod the default mats with lighting effect inside, only Fighters there are about 3330 mats, but not completely finished. It took me at least 5 hours per day and 2 weeks. So I believe it's for ACE would take more time. He is the pioneer on it and find the clue of these mats.

Salute for ACE's hard work.

For that guy, I think don't waste time on it. There are always someone in internet who are only good at taking and talking again, but do nothing.

See the different, it only add lighting effect on the default mat of Red star. ACE's work changed all the marks.

Your program is a very good addition to FB:AEP and all your work is greatly appreciated.

If there are some who can't handle something more intricate than plug-n-play, well... maybe this isn't for them. Might be different if they wanted to bash your work *and* offer a better solution, but I seriously doubt that will occur.

Can't wait to see new version. Aces, don't listen to this 'trolls' - if somebody does'nt like your stuff, he doesn't have to use it. For me it is "must-have", though I spent some time to realise, what I do wrong - have'nt seen weathered markings despite of doing everything as it is written in manual. The problem is in running it simultaneously with IL2Stab - even if IL2Mat was active, when I run FB from IL2Stab - markings are non-weathered. The same situation, but run from il2Mat - and everythings looks fine. Small problem, but problem.

About interface... a little crowded, but let's call it 'creative way in interfaces' http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. If one looks at it for more than 5 seconds, its obvious and clear.

Don't listen to the Trolls.

You could, if they did anything worthwhile. AKAIK none of the ones in here have done anything as great as what you have!

I admire Aces' work and effort, and I think this is a feature that really improves FB immersion.

Anyway, I must convey with Cosmokart in a little point: the Web site and the install procedures are anything but user-friendly. Everything is a little confusing and the abigarrated design of the site does not help the less intuitive users to find their way.

Also, I'd advice that the update should be integrated in the main program yet, and everything packed in a proper installer.

But, hey, there's a Spanish saying that reads: "Don't look too much the teeth of a horse that's a present".

BTW,

Hi chaps,

Well I really don't know what to say except a heartfelt thank you to everyone that has posted here, or sent me e-mails.

I will be delighted to continue my artwork. I was wrong to allow myself to rise to that Troll-bait, it was clearly targeted to get to me on one level or another.

I only occasionally visit this forum because there are some descent folks over who enjoy my work. I think that the idea of a mailing list is still a usefull idea and I will put it together to notify those of you who would like it.

One nice thing to come of it, suprisingly was a post on from the chap who would like the RAF roundels beefed up a bit, got me thinking that there's more that I can do in this department. whilst the beta is out for testing .

Thanks again to everyone

Best regards

Sincerely

Look, I wasn't trying to troll and I'm not being some freakin whiner. And I did read the instructions. I just wanted a simple answer to what I *might* have done wrong, not to be called a moron and a troll. I totally respect the amount of work that has been put into this, don't get me wrong. Thank you.

Hmm, this is strange, I uninstalled IL2 Mat and Mat Manager in an effort to reinstall it and possibly fix whatever I did wrong. However, I can't delete by CoopRegt folder because it says it is still in use, despite the fact that both programs are uninstalled and IL2 isn't being run. Are there any system processes that might be causing this?

yeah aces that would be SO awesome if u fixed up the Spitfire roundels. the under wing roundel is the wrong type and the upper suface wing roundel is placed too far out towards the tip. plus the colors look to pastel/crayon-like.

Your one of those guys who points out that the P51 was wrong in Saving Private Ryan, aren`t you? I love the Spit and fly it a lot, but those details seem a little ... picky? I mean, colours pastel/crayon like? looks fine to me.

Hi Resident_Jock,

I wasn't refering to you with the Troll comment m8, sorry if you interpreted it that way.

I did ask you in one of my previous posts if you'd like to drop me an e-mail and I'd try and help sort out your problems.

I think that the problem with not being able to delete "CoopRegt" is most probably that you have IL2-MAT running in the system tray. Close it and then try deleting CoopRegt again. Please let me know how you get on and I'll try and help all that I can. I have an FAQ on my website where I've attempted to address past support issues and you will hopefully see that I try my very best to get people's problems sorted as often as I can. What folks don't see of course are the numerous e-mail correspondences that take place daily. I also have my chat room so if all else fails let's arrange a chat and we can go over things in real time.

Regarding the roundels, there's only a certain amount that I can do as, IMO, the areas on the 3D model that they display on are somewhat out of position. I can "tweak" alignment but as they share the same graphic moving one left or right etc. effects both, likewise with scaling however if anyone has a guide to what style roundels appear on what locations at what wartime period then I could see if I can provide so alternative selections.

Regards

Aces, I take my hat of to you sir, the added immersion your work brings to FB is outstanding. Your work 'fixes' one of there few areas which lets down this brilliant sim and for that I wish to thankyou. Please don't let idiots dictate what and how you do things, like in so many areas in life a few do spoil things for the many, but Im sure most people who are aware of your work appreciate it as I do. Don't let them win, your the winner here as your contribution and efforts have resulted in something that stands very tall and above the idiots. It is a testement of you sir ~Salute~

I just downloaded the 1.33 version a few days ago and WOW, great improvement over IL2 Stab, Im not saying Stab is bad its just that Mat manager has sooo much more. It took me 5 tries to get it to work.....but I found out what I did wrong. You have to install IL2 Mat and configure it BEFORE install IL2 Mat Manager. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif And also the fact that I kept forgeting to active it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif I'll admit I scimmed through the instructions, but after thoroughly reading them again, I understood completely. I am so much anticipating this newer version.....Ohhhhhh the eye candy....... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Show me a picture, the size of roundel on wing can be mod, because it's only used on wing.

well its not only the size but the placement of the roundel. oleg put it right at the tip pf the clipped wing version. it should be moved down toward the wing root, pretty much right behind the outter-most 303 port, so that the red tape is right at the "12 oclock" position on the roundel(just like u have in the picture). and the under wing roundel is pretty much right over the outter-most 303 ejection port.

Only on the clipped wing version? If so, I can't change it. What I change will also affect unclipped one.

no no its wrong on both versions. i was just using the clipped wing as an example, when u look at a clipped spit in AEP with the brit roundels u'll see that the wing roundel is all the way at the end of the wing, it SHOULDN'T be.

just match the regular wing spit with that picture and ull see exactly what im saying.

Hi,

I'm afraid that they can't both be moved in opposite directions, eg one right and one left as the same MAT loads them both and moving one right also move the other right etc.

I have made a whole new series of new TGAs for release with MAT Manager v1.40 which will have many new RAF roundel combination options.

Hi McWolf,

There's some things that cannot be done, a fact of life with MAT files. Still I'm hoping that the new RAF markings options in v1.4 will at least give folks more options.

Hi Ace,
I try the britishroundel4c.mat, which control the display of roundel on top of wings. There are no any more space for moving the roundel near the central.

Wrong position for Spitfire.
http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gifBy the way, I guess, there are some new aircrafts in AEP maybe built by others not Oleg team. Totally different skiner style.

Hi Leadspitter m8,

No answer form Oleg or anyone at 1C either to my petitions request or McWolf's request. Were not getting anywhere m8.

Hi McWolf, I know the frustrations believe me, I have done as much as I can but there are some things like this that just cannot be done without seperate left and right wing roundel MATs.

Meanwhile here's a shot my RAF roundel TGAs for inclussion with MAT Manager v1.4. Still got the coding, GUI changes, MATs and directory structure to do but should be releasing v1.4 at the weekend if all goes according to plan. Want to try and get in as many historically accurate combinations as possible.

Hi Aces High!
I was just reading a thread over at netwings..
I just wanted to tell you to keep up your great work! Your MAT manager is such a great piece of work. Those new markings are astonishing (don't know if it's spelled correctly.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif )!!! And don't let yourself get upset by people that are not able to read a readme http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ! And your program isn't that hard to understand !

I'd also like to thank all those people around here supporting FB with great campaigns, skins, missions like Extreme_One and to those running good servers like Sharx does !!!

Just laugh about those not understanding your great work and don't let them go to your heart.. I hope you understand what I want to express with this http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
