Inspired by the 'We want a LOOOOONG campaign' thread, I decided to complete my calculations of how long AC campaigns (well, historical parts at least) actually are (previously had only AC2, AC4 and ACU calculated).

HowLongToBeat is a nice source of approximate player time. but it's not that accurate if we want to, well, actually compare games. Case in point, 'Main Story' there is listed as 9 and a half hours, when it's certainly most isn't. It's just the time when people tend to complete the main story - not taking into account all the walking around between missions, collecting things, etc. HowLongtoBeat basically lists the point when people see credits.

So I decided to calculate the actual time of AC main campaigns (well, as close as possible that is) following the next principles:
1. Calculate only the main mission (+important cutscenes) time, from the start of it to the end - nothing in between, no traveling between missions, no side-missions, no collecting, etc. Purely main missions and mandatory plot stuff.
2. Those calculations are based on professional walkthroughs and guides where players play the game efficiently - don't stumble around, don't fail a bunch of times, don't sidetrack for collectibles, stuff like that.
3. No modern day, just the historical parts (modern day is very iffy to calculate, and in ACU's case I decided to consider time anomalies as modern day as well)
4. A bit of a disclaimer for the first AC game - as its structure is not that standard for AC, for the main campaign I've calculated only the missions that you will for sure have to beat in the game. Investigations were calculated separately, and, they weren't calculated in an exact manner like all the rest of the missions - there's too many of them and they're all too short, range from 1 to 4 minutes, so I decided to use 3 minutes as an applicable average for each investigation. The only exception to this are the masyaf investigations which you HAVE to complete, so they're calculated in an exact manner for the main campaign.
5. Also, obviously, this won't be the EXACT length of each campaign, but it will be the closest we can get for comparison between games.

Make of that what you will. I'm just here to give stats :D

Though I do want to give a disclaimer that I didn't count gameplay to cutscene ratio at all, and AC3 while has the longest original campaign also has the most cutscenes.

Unity is NOT longer than Assassin's Creed 2. End of discussion.

Rouge

But damn, after seeing the comparison, I didn't know AC3 would be the longest. I thought AC4 was.

AC2 was 60 hours to play though once for me..... but only because the tombs were frustratingly painful and time consuming :( yes I know some people breezed through them easily but they were a lesson in abject futility and misery for me. If I had played this before ac3 I would never have bought another AC game.

AC3 I played 4 times 1 complete and 3 times just to the credits.... not sitting through them again...

AC1 never finished... good game with huge potential but a little repetitive.

ACB and ACR played at least 3 times and always enjoyed.

ACIV BF played over 100 hours... sometimes just sailing around.

Unity around 40 hours in the campaign and hundreds of hours in club competitions and co-op...

Syndicate I'm hoping for something that.... as soon as I finish it... it makes me want to start again immediately, at least 2 more times.

I have never completed any ac game with 100% sync :D

Ubi games have always been generous with missions and collectibles to make them a good campaign time..... but for me it is all about how much enjoyment it gives me....

Unity is NOT longer than Assassin's Creed 2. End of discussion.

Bare in mind it doesn't include traveling to the markers, just the length of missions.

Paris is bigger so it would take longer to move around.;)

I'm a big time sidetracker. All of these took me so much longer to play.

Yeah, I'd say I completed AC4's story, for example, at around 20-25 hour mark cause I've spent a bit of time exploring :D

Technically it's impossible to complete the games in the time listed in the post, even if you just smash your way through the main campaign only, cause, as I said, I counted just the main missions without anything inbetween. In the playthrough there'd be at least an additional hour or two due to the travelling between missions we have to do (which adds up quite a bit).

The main thing is that some of the games (Black Flag, Brotherhood, Revelations) are very side-mission oriented, so those games can't really be enjoyed if you don't go off-track.

Like in Black Flag, in the story missions you have to eventually upgrade your ship to beat the tougher competition. To upgrade the ships you have to hit the seas, so you have to pirate and plunder to upgrade your ship. To earn money you have to take on Forts and Plantations. Brotherhood needs you to take on the Borgia towers for basic safety and map reasons. Whereas AC1, AC2, AC3 and Unity are heavily story oriented. The side missions are there but its not really something you have to do to get around.

I did that with all the AC games.

I don't feel that I have to rush through my games and complete them. I just take my own sweet time. :p

I'm a massive sidetracker the first time I play the games, then on replays I do the content I feel is worth playing again - or I do none of the side stuff if I can't be bothered and just want to recap the main story.

Well, the main campaign without the DLCs is longer in AC4 than in AC3..

My gaming motto, Leave no stone unturned
Suddenly a 5 hour game takes at least 20 hours to finish..

So, I counted main campaign time for Syndicate. Same basic principles: no free roaming, just the missions, just the historical time period, professional walkthrough with no failures or ****-ups to get an effecient time-spend. Here are the results:

ACS
Seq1 - 18m
Seq2 - 23m
Seq3 - 60m
Seq4 - 70m
Seq5 - 72m
Seq6 - 57m
Seq7 - 72m
Seq8 - 73m
Seq9 - 69m
Total: 8h 34m

Which actually makes ACS the longest, time-wise to complete, campaign we had in an AC series yet.

And people were complaining about having only 9 sequences.

(once again, obviously with free roam and distractions and all that stuff it's even longer, like all the other times here, so keep in mind that it's not possible to complete the game in 8 hours at least because of travel time between missions, like with the calculated time for every other game, plus even with the principles used time still can vary, but it's a close enough estimation).

Huge leisure player here. Loved free roaming these games.

Clocked in probably 120 hours on AC3

110 Hrs AC4

120 Hours AC Unity

@Farlander- Very good news! Are there more missions per sequence? or is it that each mission is longer?

There's 42 missions in the main campaign (5 of them are City Liberation introductory missions, capturing your first borough, they're marked as 'gold' on map which is a sign for main story, but they might not be counted as story sequences), so amount of missions is approximately like in AC3 and AC4. Sequences 1 and 2 have 1 mission each, but there's 4 to 7 missions in all other sequences. There are some short ones that are like 5-8 minutes, but there's also quite a few with considerable playtime of 15-20 min, with the rest averaging at like 10-12 minutes. So missions are pretty meaty.

Took me 64 hours to 100% Syndicate.
Was fun.

I have a hard time believing Unity was that long. It's one of the shortest in the list, but not by much; it felt significantly shorter than any of the other games (despite me doing about the same amount of side stuff that I always do, plus I'm not counting Rogue). Can't argue with the numbers though, I guess.

Well, even though missions in Unity are lengthy, not a whole lot happens in quite a few of them. For example, Graduation mission is like 10-13 minutes, which is normal game time, but what really happens in it that advances the plot? Nothing, plotwise it could be dealt just with one cutscene. But this is why it feels short.

Speaking of cutscenes, I decided to add to calculations how much percentage do cutscenes take part of the whole campaign time, and by cutscenes I mean strictly non-interactive scene, i.e. not counting stuff like talking during a mission (cause then it can get really confusing). Main campaign of ACS has 1h 58m of cutscenes, which means that 23% of the main campaign is cutscenes. When will have time will try to count other games as well.
