Does a front side bus make that much of a differnece....

Perhaps I have a 900Mhz CPU, and the I see a x.xGHZ with a 800mhz Front Side bus, Regarding the initial processer speed, would the FSB act more like a seperate processer, or just a helper, and if so could an 800 FSB out perform a 900MHZ cpu?

? not sure what you are asking. A faster frontside bus means the processor can communicate with RAM faster. Right now the system bottleneck is the speed of RAM. In the last 5 years cpu speeds have gone from 300mhz to 3ghz, but RAM speed has only bumped from 100mhz to 200mhz. As you can see cpu speed has really out distanced RAM speed. So now these fast cpus are sitting around, waiting for data from the RAM. A faster FSB helps move that data faster.

What I mean is, Could the Front Side bus Alone Outperform a CPU of similar speed......oh lets say a 555MHZ FSb...Could a 500 mhz processer be similar in performance.

The FSB does no processing, it cannot "outperform" the processor, it's simply the amount of information that can go from the processor to something else. It's like a pipeline letting water through. A bigger pipe will let out more water from the pump, but without the pump itself, the pipe will do nothing...

so to answer your question, yes, a faster fsb with a similar processor will be faster. Say you have a 2.5ghz P4, one on a 533fsb, the other on a 800fsb. The 800 will be faster as it won't be waiting as much for the ram

Yah, but his question was if the FSB alone, not coupled with a processor, can outperform a processor. That's what I get when I read it at least.

And thats what Im asking..Is a FSB a processer in it self, because I see MHZ and I think processer.

Just curious because Im getting a new computer soon and wondering if a FSB helps much

Ok, I already explained it.

You're getting these fancy key terms all mixed up. People like to throw around "MHz" because now all the lamens out there know (think) that higher MHz = better, but it's just a measure, a number, actually. A Hz is short for Hertz, which is just one time, or cycle, per second. And the Mega suffix is just a suffix for a million. So a processor at and Giga means billion. So a processor at 2 GHz runs at 2 billion cycles per second.

The MHz attributed to the FSB is just how much per second can be put through.

Nevermind, the answer is no.

wait a 900 mhz chip is either a pentium 3 or a amd athlon
they dont use the mobos that have 800mhz fsb.

socket 370, socket a or 422 something like that ....this is ancient technology which to me is anything older then 6 months.

Honestly i dont see your concern

Your chip is incompatible with those newer faster mobos

lets see pentium 4 started at 1.4 mhz if i am not mistaken....mind fading into tech nerd limbo..........

The whole computer runs off of a clock. It is the way that everything stays in sync and data is moved around the computer. Basically everything moves in pulses based off of that clock. Hz/Mhz/ghz are basically all scales of measurement of the speed of things moving off of that pulse. So think of that pulse as a metradome like in music, where it clicks every so often in a steady rythm, Say once every second. Something at 1hz will pulse every 10th of a second, 1mhz every 100th of a second, 1ghz 1000 of a second. (not the true scale, but you get the picture.). Now your system is made up of tones of components all running at different speeds, but are in synch because they all run off of that 1 clock tick. For example on my system I have a AMD processor running at 1663mhz. It runs on a fsb of 133mhz ( you also notice that my cpu speed is 12.5x the speed of my fsb, that's how it stays in synch). My fsb is attached to my memory that is running at 133mhz as well. Since my fsb and memory are double data rate, they send data on both the rise and fall of the clock tick, they effectlivy run at 266mhz (the 800mhz fsb you are asking about only runs at 200mhz, but it is quad data rate, so it sends data 4 times during the cycle). Then my PCI bus, here all my cards are is also attached to the cpu through a bus that runs at 33mhz. Hope this helps explain what is going on.

I don't understand why you people post answers to a question when you don't know what the hell you're talking about. If you don't know the answer, don't pretend like you know what you're talking about and give out false information. It doesn't help the person who asked the question, and you end up looking like a ******* to anyone who has even the slightest understanding of how a computer works. Just because you CAN post, doesn't mean you have to. On second thought, lets see some more "expert" advice. I could use a good laugh.

Heres how I explain a computer to new people. It is VERY simple (so don't laugh)

If you need to get your kids from the school to the museum for a feild trip, you send them on the bus. The bus travels thru town and takes a load of kids. The bus can only hold 16 kids. But, because there are 1000 kids that need to go to the museum, it needs to make alot of trips.
The museum can only handle 50 kids at a time, and once the kids have been thru the museum, they are sent off to "camps" for the summer.

So the bus, now loaded, drives the route to the museum.

But the speed limit on the hiways is only 33 miles per hour.

Well, the town decides that it needs to upgrade, so it makes all the roads 66 miles per hour, this now cuts the traveling time of the bus from the school to the museum down considerably. But it is still taking way too long.
The museum can now handle 90 kids at a time.

By now, the school has grown to 2000 kids, and needs to send alot more kids to the museum, so the school board decides to get a bigger bus. This one can hold 32 kids.

At the same time, the hiways dept makes the speed of the hiways 120 mph so this bus travels alot faster, with more kids. More kids mean less trips and at faster speeds.

Well, jump to present day.......

The school has 120,000,000 kids.

The school bus carries 1000 kids.

The speed on the hiways is now 800 mph.

And the museum is capable of running 2000 kids thru it at a time.

Ok, here's where we do the "blending" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

the "kids" are bytes of information.

The school is the program.

Town is the "motherboard" or MOBO.

The bus amount of passengers is the amount of ram in the computer.

The bus speed is the hiways speed limit.

The museum is the "CPU"

The amount of visitors thru the museum is the mHz of the CPU

The "camps" are the sound card, graphics card and the modem/networking cards to which the "kids" go after the museum.

So......
(and I did say it was a simple explanation)

in the beginning....

16 kids hop on a bus and travel at 33 mph to the museum.
the museum could PROCESS 50 kids at a time

and today

1000 kids hop on the bus and travel at 800 mph and the museum can PROCESS 2000 at a time.

or

This computer can hold 1000meg of ram (or a gig) and the hard drive is 120 meg the MOBO has a front side bus speed of 800mHz and the CPU is 2 Gig, you will now know what the hell he is talking about.

(hey, I did say it was simple)

If you are unsure of the answers that people give to your questions, rephrase the question and let them know not to give technical answers as you are new to this. Why does EVERY thread in this forum quickly go off topic? Is it because this is the off topic forum?

*Comes back an hour later with another sugarcane, panting and mumbling hardware tools. Joins in on the brawl by breaking the sugarcane in two, and repeatedly striking at FLYdude.*

*At this point, realizes FLYdude is dead. Goes and visits the bar, whilst watching the saved JonZ video from my laptop. Good times /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif *
