View Full Version : PC FC4 Crashing in Windows 10

I just updates to from Win7 to Win10 and now FC4 will not launch. Initial error was a failure to initialize an offline profile that was in the Documents/My Games/Far Cry 4 folder. I uninstalled then reinstalled the game and it is now crashing when trying to setup my profile. I'm now getting File System Failure: Aborting execution. It calls out the GameProfile.xml file located in the same Documents/My Games/Far Cry 4 folder, but the Far Cry 4 folder is not there when I check. Any ideas? I'm getting ready to roll back to Win7 where everything was working perfectly.

if you have the game on steam .. make sure you run steam as an ADMINISTRATOR (right click your .exe for steam and select run as administrator)

do the same for your u play /exe

Hey Shonn,

So Far Cry 4 was made before Windows 10 OS was released, and isn't officially supported. WID992007 has some good tips that I was about to suggest, so please try them!

Other things you can try include;
1) making sure you have all your drivers up-to-date.
2) Try to run Uplay with no other programs running in the background
3) Try uninstalling/reinstalling both Uplay and Far Cry 4.

If it still ends up crashing, you can contact support. This guide (https://support.ubi.com/en-US/FAQ/9/3888/how-to-submit-dxdiag-and-msinfo-files/kA030000000emSbCAI) shows how you can send them relevant files for them to be able to help you troubleshoot the issue.

also verify your game files if you have upgraded to windows 10

you just replaced your operating system . so doing a full file verify may help do so when running either steam or uplay as run as ADMIN for best results

To verify your files if you bought the game thru Steam

go to your Steam games library

right click on far cry 4

select properties

select local files

select verify Integrity of game cache

it takes a few min to do but its faster the redownloading your entire game , if its only a few files that were corrupt or installed incorrectly .... this in many cases will fix your problems getting the game to start

If you have the U play only Version of the game you can also verify your game files with U play

if you have the game via u play only here are instructions how to verify your game files thru their client

https://support.ubi.com/en-US/FAQ/60/3888/how-do-i-install--uninstall--verify-a-game-in-uplay/kA030000000ee85CAA

again the main point to remember to right click your . exe for steam or u play and select run as admin

if you have the game via origin i suspect its about the same .. dunno ..as my version is from steam

So I played 30 mins on Skyrim today, then loaded it back up this evening to discover my game didn't save properly. Read through some of the Steam forums and the solution to the Skyrim save game problem was also the solution to this problem!

Here is what you need to do:

1. Open the Documents folder.
2. Right click on the My Games folder and select properties.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click the Edit button.
5. Select the Home Users group by left clicking it once (it will highlight when selected).
6. Click the check box for Full Control.
7. Click the Apply button.

Relaunch game and it should load right up! Hope this helps!

I've been playing Far Cry 4 quite a while now, just about 35-40 hours and it has been working fine, until a few days ago, when it has turned up a black flicker in the foreground...It's not at launch, but it turns up after a while(a minute or 10 minutes)...I upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 a couple of days ago, could that have caused it? Please help!

I have the same problem. I upgraded to windows 10 a few months back and today I thought, why not play Far Cry 4.

The game continues to boot and wants to install DX, frameworks etc etc in a 5/5 step. It proceeds to the loading screen before the main menu screen appears and then crashes with a classic windows error that won't solve anything. If I try to restart it the game the same thing happens, it wants to install all the 5 things AGAIN. Already here I find it strange.

I did some digging and I ended up on this thread. Is any solve going to be made? I don't want to sound like an a**hole but many of us already waited months for the SLI fix. After all we paid for this game.

reinstall your game, also if you performed a windows Upgrade use DDU and wipe out your old Nvidia Driver

get and Use DDU to install your new Drivers and do so under custom and perform a clean install

if the game has a problem with your direct X files then your problems could be indeed much worse and you may have a deeper problem with your operating system

you can find the proper Direct X files as well as .Net Framework and C++ files right in the games support directory if you need to re install them

try re downloadeing the game or Run both Steam as well as Uplay (if you have the game via Steam ) as RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR and also ....verify your game files

to verify your files if you bought the game thru Steam ..\EXIT Steam ..right click your steam icon ..select run as Administrator

to launch Steam

go to your Steam games library

right clik on far cry 4

select properties

select local files

select verify Integrity of game cache

Again its probably best to make sure you launch Uplay as RUN as Administrator when you do a file verify

In Uplay, top left corner, settings, uncheck "Enable in-game overlay for supported games". Also uncheck both notification boxes. This got it going for me. Not sure what one did the trick but it did load the game after doing this. It did however crash after about 45 minutes of gameplay. I think that may be another, older issue with the game.

game runs fine here , has since the day it launched ...

see the tips section here http://steamcommunity.com/app/298110/discussions/0/627456486417358966/

see section 18 if you have an Nvidia GPU and get crashes the Nvidia gameworks settings will cause your game to crash they were busted in the Nvidia drivers months ago

18 . Nvidia gameworks problems , if your getting crashes with an Nvidia GPU in the game, try to not use the Nvidia gameworks features , these were busted in the recent Nvidia drivers
please see the following threads about this problem .
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1259821-One-more-on-FC4-crashes?

and this one on the official Nvidia forums
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/799274/geforce-drivers/nvlddmkm-keep-crashing-in-far-cry-4/

additionally with AMD GPU's there was a problem with the AMD beta 15.11 driver that caused the game to crash on launch
see this thread
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1319893-CCC-15-11-crashes-FC3-4?

to fix it roll back to the 15.10 beta driver or use the 15.7 WHQL drivers

you can get both from this link
http://www.guru3d.com/files-categories/videocards-ati-catalyst-vista-win-7.html

make sure you use DDU when uninstalling your current drivers in safe mode for best results
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

*update AMD has released newer drivers but they still have issues , under Known issues
in the new 16.1 driver is
[84434]Far Cry 4 – A crash may occur after performing (ALT + Enter) to switch between windowed/full screen modes with the AMD Gaming Evolved "Video Capture" feature turned on
(not all AMD GPU's are supported see http://betanews.com/2015/11/24/amd-kills-gpu/ )

also see section 10 and 11

10. BACKROUND APPLICATIONS may also cause the game to not launch properly and you may need Exit out of them, or reconfigure them to work properly with Far Cry 4 known apps that can cause this are

A. EVGA PRECISION
B. MSI AFTERBURNER
C. Riva Tuner Statistics Server
D. DXtory
E. Motionin Joy
F. some Anti Virus or Firewall software (depends on settings)
G. MSI true Color
H. Evolve gameing client
I. AMD Raptr \ AMD Gaming Evolved

11. The game requires UPlay. You can download and install it from https://uplay.ubi.com .**note steam may not install the current version **as the title is over 1 year old **

Hey Shonn,

So Far Cry 4 was made before Windows 10 OS was released, and isn't officially supported. WID992007 has some good tips that I was about to suggest, so please try them!

Other things you can try include;
1) making sure you have all your drivers up-to-date.
2) Try to run Uplay with no other programs running in the background
3) Try uninstalling/reinstalling both Uplay and Far Cry 4.

Hello,

This is to inform you that I have Purchased Far Cry 4 today, and following are the errors/issues I have faced while playing;

a) Sudden Stuttering while in the game, its so terrible that it is unplayable, also due to stuttering there is Audio-Video incoordination.

b) Every time I quit to the game using Save and Quit Option in Game Menu, there is always Windows Error, and it says that Window is collecting the error.......so it is like if I have played 10 times today for instance, it will show the same error as mentioned 10 times while I close the Game.

Also to let you know, my PC specs;

I have Core i7 6700 HQ Processor, NVIDIA 4GB GeForce GTX 950M Graphics, 2TB HDD and 16GB RAM Laptop, Windows 10 OS.

I therefore request you to please resolve this error which is ruining my Game Experience.

Hey there TiE.ROSS, welcome to the Ubisoft forums!

From your own description, you are trying to run the game on a laptop. Laptops may run the game but are not officially supported (https://support.ubi.com/en-US/faqs/000021230/Minimum-Requirements-PC-FC4/).

I suggest doing the things mentioned on one of these forum posts on this thread, as a lot of different users gave workarounds that helped them run the game. Alternatively, the following is a kind of "advanced troubleshooting step" that can fix one possible issue with the game. This workaround fixes a specific crashing issue if the file FC64.dll was causing the crash for the game.

What I'd like you to do is locate and delete that file. It will be located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\Games\Far Cry 4\bin\FC64.dll

After you delete it, I'd like you to try verifying the files in Uplay and then allow Uplay to try fixing the problem.

1. Open the Uplay PC client.
2. From the Games section, click on Far Cry 4 in your games list.
3. Once on the game page, click on the "Properties".
4. Please click on the option to "Verify files". This process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the verifying game files window will display a notification.

If that doesn't fix the issue for you, I recommend trying to run the game on a desktop that is supported for the game and then it should work. :)

I have had a massive headache trying to play this game over the last several days. The Far Cry series is one of my favorites ever since the original game, and as such I actually bought FC4 at launch. I haven't had the opportunity to play it until this month (yeah I go through my backlog slowly). Anways, here are my system specs:

Windows 10 Pro 64bit - running all the latest updates etc.
Intel i7 3770K OC @ 4.2ghz
MSI Z77A-GD45
16 GB DDR3
ASUS NVIDIA GTX 1080 8GB Strix (Factory OC settings) - latest drivers from NVIDIA
4k Resolution Monitor (native 4k no DSR involved)
OS is on a SSD, the Game is on one of my multiple 7200 rpm HDDs
Thermaltake Overseer Full Tower Case with excellent airflow. --- My temps are stellar in game too.
CoolerMaster CM SilentPro 1000 watt PSU
Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard
Corsair Void 7.1 Headphones
Corsair M90 Mouse

To be clear I do not have issues with any non Uplay games on this system. The only games that are giving me grief are The Crew and FC4. :( I have another system with an i7 4790K and GTX 980m GPU (Sager laptop) and it plays both of those games without a single crash, so it seems to be specific to my GTX 1080... maybe...

I played through the Stater/Tutorial area without any problems at all. Once I finished that I have had for the most part about 15 minutes of gameplay, on average, before it freezes. I had one period of approx 2.5 hours without any freezes, but since then it's been right back to hard freezing on me every ~15 min again. I have had a variety of types of freezes, with maybe 2 exceptions they have been hard freezes and I have had to restart my PC in order to do anything. Originally the freezes could be anything from freezing on the menu to freezing while driving to freezing while in combat to freezing while on a mission to freezing while doing nothing but staring at the scenery. However the last several freezes have kicked me to a FC4 loading screen that says "Setting up Profile". According to the main menu in game I have played almost 10 hours of the campaign and I know I have had 5-6 hours lost due to it freezing etc. Needless to say I'm rather disgusted with it. When I can actually play the game it's very fun, even better then FC3 (unmodded at least). If it wasn't as enjoyable as it is I would have quit it days ago.
At no point in the dozens of freezes has it ever crashed to desktop with any error message. I have had 3 different BSODS, 2 of which were the DPC Watchdog Violation error message. The other one was unkown error (I think, it was a few days ago).

I run at the Ultra Preset with Blur turned Off and Anti-Alisasing turned Off. I do Not have any of the "Gameworks" settings enabled. This is at 3840x2160 Resolution. I have tried lowering the settings without any improvements whatsoever.

I have uninstalled my Drivers with DDU and installed the latest updated Drivers from Nvidia.
I have verified that all my other Drivers are up to date.
I have disabled all non essential Startup programs.
I have disabled any and all overlays.
I have set FC4 to Windows 8 Compatible Mode.
I set Uplay to Run as Administrator.
I set FC4 to Run as Administrator.
I have verified the game files in Uplay.
I have uninstalled the entire game and re-downloaded it to install on a New HDD.
I have closed all other programs aside from necessary Windows functions.
I have deleted the Far Cry 4 folder from My Games.
I have done other things that I can't remember at the moment.....

Any thoughts or suggestions? At this point all I can think of is to try underclocking my GPU and reverting my CPU to stock speeds. I haven't done this yet since I know from experience that I can OC both my CPU and GPU a fair bit higher if I wanted to. Right now they are running stock voltages and have been rock solid stable in everything except these 2 Ubisoft games.

I'm a former PC repair tech that still does similar things as a hobby (self torture at times), so feel free to suggest anything and everything.

Thanks.

hey Elder where did ya install uplay ?

i think it likes to be on the same drive as your OS

i have WIN 10 too (pro) i have Uplay installed on Drive C ..same as my OS

games are on drive E

the other thing ya may wanna check is your geforce experience settings , i know a few months ago shadow play caused an issue with my GTX 960

dunno bout the new nvidia cards or drivers .. im still on the last driver ASUS released for my card driver version 359.06 ..i had nothing but problems and lower framerates with any of the newer Nvidia drivers ..i also NEVER install any of the Nvidia crapware with my drivers

no geforce experience

no 3d vision

just the driver and control panel

HDMI audio (since my one screens = a 40 inch HDTV \ in case i wanna watch a movie )

and Nvidia Physx

if that don't help open a support ticket with Ubisoft Support

if ya need contact info go here https://support.ubi.com/en-GB/Contact#en-gb

oh and disable any extra in game overlays

INCLUDING THE ONE in Uplay settings

this game HATES IN GAME OVERLAY programs

i keep the Steam one off .. and only the uplay one on < i have the steam version of the game

some people have to disable the Uplay in game overlay in Uplay settings and try win 7 compatibility mode ..not Win 8

but who knows it could be another Nvidia driver error ..they had some bad ones with the start of the yr back in January 2016 and driver version they released back then and that shadow play bug

wish ya luck solving it ..all else fails contact Ubi Support , is all ya can do

let me check the supported resolutions page too ..ya may wanna look at that .. i gotta find it

see http://www.wsgf.org/dr/far-cry-4/en
it may be the game does not support the res your running ?

LOl ... seems will not really work on Win 10 ...

On my newest PC (Win10, 64bit, GTX 980Ti, i7-6700K 4.5Ghz, 16GB Ram ...)
I have sometimes long freezes and after that sometimes it continues or it crashes to desktop , as it is only every 1-2 hours it seems I will have to live with it !

Will try to disable Uplay overlay and switch to Win 7 compatibility !

PS: Nothing helped ...
but ...
KARMA RELATED FREEZES NOW

When I deactivated all NVIDIA special settings it is somehow better,
it only freezes now
WHEN I SOLVE A KARMA RELATED MISSION, every time when I get that information "KARMA" points gained, the game freezes for 2-5 sec and after that it continues !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF ...
even when I use a bow to kill animals, where you get some Karma Points, it freezes for some seconds ?
That is one of the strangest bug I ever had in any game :-)

Anyone has a clue from what that could be ?

Anyway it is "playable" and I know, not to do anything after I received some Karma points until the freeze is over !

PPS:

FOUND THE REASON and the SOLUTION !

Okay it was because I used an old save game, which I played on my old pc 2 years ago ...
it seems many settings haven't been in that version and I deactivated a lot of onscreen messages to have a better immersion !

SO HOW TO SOLVE FREEZES in that case ?

GO to every setting and say RESET TO STANDARD , save it and restart the game !
Now start it and look if everything is working, if all is okay ... go back and change it to what you prefer ...

AT THE MOMENT I HAVE NO MORE FREEZES AND CTD :-)
and I am happy !!!

Wish you all luck !
