A minor point but I thought a B-17
had a 10 member crew but Ive never seen
more than 9 bail out. There will always
be one poor soul stuck in the doomed
plane. He will always be visible in the
top fueselage window (maybe its the
radio room station). I always feel sorry
to shoot a B-17 down knowing that poor
crewmember is permanently doomed. Is
showing a max of 9 members bailing out
a game engine limitation? I was
just curious to know why that guy
is always left in a doomed aircraft.

Yup, he's always left behind. Parachute shortage?
Cheers!

If you try this, you'll see why, i think:

Make a simple mission in FMB.

Place two B-17s as Stationary Aircraft somewhere.

Now go to the view in which you can mouse around the view of the aircraft. I beleive you select the plane and then right click on an empty spot of the map? I forget exactly, but if you're familiar with FMB you'll know what I mean.

OK. Now that you have a perspective of the aircraft as you would if you were standing on the ground next to the B-17s, mouse around and zoom in and out until your view goes "through" the B-17 that your viewpoint is not orbitting.

You will see the crew member in question, sitting right at his radio and nav desk. He lives there, apparently http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Seems he is a permanent part of the plane and is always there even if no crew at all is in the a/c.

Well actually, don't feel bad. Would this be reality, you'd rarely if ever see 10 or 9 parachutes after shooting a B-17 down. 0 to 5 would more be the norm http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Lol...thanks for the responses. Its clear
that game was meant to behave this way.
Poor guy.

I don't feel bad about shooting down B-17s and "only" seeing nine parachutes, because I don't feel bad about hitting fighters with 37mm cannons or Mk103s and blowing them up like firecrackers. Zero parachutes there...

They aren't real http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif so I don't even feel bad about shooting my stupid wingman down when he steals my kill...and if there's a parachute from that bugger's plane afterwards, guess who gets a Golden BB right up the...

I had this "glory" vision that most of the crew made it out from a bomber, but after reading Jane´s "Battles with the Luftwaffe" I´ve realized that was rare as one statet above.

Bomber pilots rarely got out - they would hold the plane steady for their crew to jump and would be trapped due to centrifugal forces as the plane went in...

For those how did not know it;
at the end of the war (from may 1944)one of the waistgunners was not flying every mission.
this is the crew of a B17-G
Pilot.
Co-pilot.
Bombardier:togglier.
Navigator.
Engineer:gunner.
Radio operator.
Ball turret gunner.
Waist gunner left.
Waist gunner right.
Tail gunner.
Depending of the place of the plane in the box left or right waist gunner was deleted.

Sensai.
