AAAAAAAAAAARGH!

Have you ever seen what a chainsmokers computer looks like from the inside? They are the dirtiest, nastiest, most disgusting things you can work on. Cigarette smoke + dust turns into a brown fuzzy paste that covers everything inside the computer and causes all kinds of fun things ranging from bad contacts to shorting out pins.

I have nothing against smokers, I even love a good cigar myself, but for crying out loud just get up and go outside. Don't kill your electronics with it!

Anyways.. can I recharge my cell phone with one of those?-)

You're not wrong, Swinger. I just did an overhaul & upgrade on a friend's rig, and it was disgusting http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif
It took four hours of scrubbing & scraping (along with the usual, gentler methods) to bring the box to "as new" condition http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The copper heatsink was deep-brown, very sticky and needed scrubbing with detergent to remove the tarry layer. I could go on, but it was just gross.........

The end result of the clean-up was that the CPU temperature went down by over 10oC, and the case temp by about the same. Anywhere that air was drawn through a fan had suffered - and a couple of fans had to be replaced completely.

My mate wasn't too pleased when I charged him for all the extra work - so I handed him a box with all the dust, fluff, tar scrapings and brown Q-tips and tissues where I had solvent-washed the insides of the case 'cos that was brown & sticky too! I think he got the message.

I hate to think of what his lungs look like http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Took the words right out of my mouth http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I guess their tarred up, stained PC's are giving them a subtle hint.....

I'd hate to think of what my lungs look like right now. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif I'm not even a smoker, but I work in a place where smoking is allowed on the shop floor. Most of the time I can avoid it, but I still need to walk through the building now and then and right through all that crap. However, I do drink. I wonder if they make anything that dispenses alcohol instead, so I don't have to bother my wife. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Yep, it costs companies a fortune for those who allow smoking at work...

Now imagine what your lungs look like on the inside.....

Woofiedog & oFZo - Unless you operate your computer in a negative pressure vacuum tent or have no rugs or carpeting & vacuuum every day, there's going to be dust that gets inside the computer. Just plain cigarette smoke will only give you that brown tar glazing, but smoke + dust turns into mud. I've seen dozens of computers and a handful of laptops get ruined that way.

Still don't believe me, fine. Let's do a little practical experiment. Look up to the ceiling where you're smoking. Notice any discolouration? Take the test even further, spray some detergent there and wipe. Notice any difference?

DISCLAIMER: This is not intended to start a flame war, some people get annoyed when topic like this is brought up. Please keep in mind, that I'm not your daddy, or school headmaster, or your doctor. I'm just a guy that fixes computers and I'm saying that this is what I see in front of me every day.

Brando - You know exactly what I mean. That mud will coat everything. Especially bad for laptops, since cooling is a major problem with them. Just imagine what happens when that mud cooks into a crust that will cover up all the air holes. The worst one I've seen was a little HP, that had blown it's printer port. My air duster couldn't cut through the crust on the side of the Slot 1 processor, I had to take a screwdriver and scrape it off so I could see what kind of a CPU it was.

i think on the 'imagine what your lungs look like' front most smokers are better aware than their non-smoking associates of what its doing to them, they just don't care. same should go for their pc's and the poor bugger who cleans it? well he should charge extra, as someone further up the thread did. ah consent, don't ya just love it?

hey i posted this to help increase comfort levels experienced by the virtual pilot, i myself gave up tobacco 5 months ago also but still find myself occasionally in need of a light, jeez i think its damn funny too, i see by the fact that they are now sold out of the first option ( maybe i should ask for some royalties..lol) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gifthat this is important to us virtual pilots, swing if you don't like repairing gummed up comps refuse thier business, i'm sure they will find someone else to give thier money to. i guess i should not have been surprised to have the anti smoking police voice thier opinion even when the thread read "attention smokers", i totally agree that smoking is bad for you and your computer, all should refrain from it, just have a laugh http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

So I should run the PC on hepa-filtered air? LOL!
I should run ME on that good!

A working keg tap front panel should be a real hit with the college crowd to say the least!
