Get the pedals for now, and just use "Freelook", which, although a pain to set up, works just as good once you get it right !!

Thanks Skullin. I use mouse view on my X-45 right now (is that the same as free look?).

I've gotten pretty good at keeping track of enemies with the hat or mouse view. That's why I am leaning a bit toward the pedals. I've also read that Track IR is not recommended for playing through a USB Hub, which I would have to do.

Every now and then I get a hankering to buy a new gadget, and well, flight sims have kept me busy the past few months.

Guys, trust me. Not Freelook, not X45 mouse view can not substitute Track IR.

Freelook is like trackIR, but works from your webcam... any cheapone will do. If you put some effort into setting it up, it really is just as good. I took the power LED from my case, extended the wires about 4 feet, put the LED into a small plastic tube (the end of a cigar tube), and have it protuding through the bill of a cap. If you just use a piece of white paper like it suggests, then yes, it sux... but with the LED, you can turn the "threshhold" all the way up, which just blackens out everything except the LED.

I'm telling you, it works absolutely flaweless for me now !!!! The settings are another pain, but well worth the effort once they are perfect. Occasionally on a really sunny day i have to shut all the curtains etc... but thats the only problem i ever have !!

Freelook is utter ****! Get TIR. Stuff the pedals, or get them later.

Treat yourself to TiR.

You could always build pedals for cheap. You can continue rudder'ing as you have been, but TiR just makes the sim-pilots life so much easier.

<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">
Specs:
More expensive than the dining set.
Less expensive than the couch.
Smaller than the dishwasher.
Just as noisy as the refridgerator.
Faster than the cars' computer.
Less practical than the car.
Face it, people who put thier computer specs in thier signature are pretty ****ing wierd.

Thanks for all of the opinions! Baldie seemed to answer what I was asking without me asking: which makes my sim experience easier or more efficient.

Thanks to all, pro pedal or pro tir!

BTW: anybody use TIR through a USB hub? I've heard that I should avoid that but may have to anyway.

If you sat at my computer and put my hat on, you would obviously be amazed at how good it works. I wonder if you ever used it at all... maybe just don't want to hear that there is something out there for free after you spent your money on the same thing ?

LIke i said, it works flawslessly for me. Therefore, you either have no idea what your talking about, or your calling me a liar. Either way - you seem like a real swell guy. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

Thanks for the advice, Skullin. I have an old webcam, so I may try Freelook before investing in TIR.

Does it work in enhanced mode? Answer: no!

Have you got TIR?

BaldieJr

I had TiR working through a usb hub and had no problems. Maybe others who have had a problem with it can comment?

PS: I also have pedals, and if I had to give one of the two up, the pedals would go. TiR stays put!

As for the webcam thing: tried it and liked it. Then I got TiR and realized that the two are miles apart. The webcam is nice, if thats all you have, but TiR is simply better.

It really depends on what type of stick you use. If you're used to a twist rudder stick, the a TrackIR is easily the best choice. On the other hand, If you're used to the hat (or other alternate view-control) then perhaps the rudder pedals would be better.

I've found the pedals are much more precise and (with a litlle practice) are definitely superior to ANY other rudder input device. Having said that, I would be able to adapt to using a "twisty" again if I had to, but I would H@TE going back to hat-switch for view.

I have two usb plugs on my machine.

in one is hub, the other is trackir

I use hub for all the other stuff I have - lol

btw - I have ch pro pedals and TIR, I love the pedals, but the Trackir would be first in line for me.

Salute!

Since I believe you said you had an X-45, you have to ask yourself the question of which is more important to you:
A. TrackIR so that you don't have to use the mouse or the silly mouse control on the throttle control and you are happy/comfortable with using the rocker for rudder control (how is your gunnery?)
OR
B. CH Pro Pedals so that you just don't have to use that rocker for rudder control and you are happy/comfortable with using the mouse or the mouse control to look around and find your enemies (how is your situational awareness and tracking ability?).

Personally, if you truly can't get the funds for both but only for one (new), I would take the money and go buy both used (maybe for a little more). You can pick up older TrackIRs (like 1 or 2) much easier now that 3 is out. I picked up used CH Pro Pedals for $80 on ebay.

YMMV.

This is one of the most difficult poll I've ever got since I can't play FB without any of them.
Separate stick + throttle, ch rudder and TrackIR is ultimate flight-sim setup I've been longed for for 10 years.
Wishes still left are just artificial G-force and 360degree display which will never be available for common people until I die.
(I'd rather fly real prop plane. it's cheaper. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

If you can't afford both, go for cheaper one for now.
Get another ASAP before you regret.
If it takes long time unfortunately, you'll come here and moan when you get both.
Be sure. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Totally agree. Don't worry about the hub (no problems here), and get TrackIR.
Cheers!

Get the peddles. Peddles are a must with WWII planes.

Really, this is a hard poll since I already have both, but since you have neither, you have already adapted. I'd say that in that case, the peddles add more immersion factor. Hard to quantify though. Basically, you can't go wrong with either.

Heh, well, if you are using a twisty stick, then go with TIR, if not, go with peddles - how 'bout that?

Hope I helped! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

i have to admit... I have no idea what you mean by that? I run in perfect settings if that's what you mean ???
http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif
Otherwise, i'm interested in how trackIR could be better? sorry if i'm hijacking your post, but it should be relevant to you as well. What i mean is, with freelook, the camera pans exactly how i move my head, and centers perfectly most of the time. Maybe TrackIR centers itself slightly better, but i have a button set for that anyways... other than that i really can't see how it could be better? maybe higher FPS? well, Freelook moves as smooth as silk for me, so i'm not sure. Not trying to start an argument, i really am curious if i'm missing out on anything. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Get the pedals for now. I have TIR,an X45 and pedals. The X45 mouse view though not as good as TIR is sufficient. Get the pedals for now..... the X45 mouse view is excellent. IMO the pedals would help your flying better. You could map your flaps to the rudder rocker of the X45 and try some different settings for prop pitch and trim.. I have my pitch on the thumb knob of my X 45 and elevator trim on the finger knob. It is a real enhancement having all those controls on one hand.
