Patch runs ok on my machine(old athlon 750 + Gforce 3 ti200, win98se) but the P40E AI could catch me in a 109F-4 when I attempted to spiral climb above them. I tried this several times and the P40E's could catch me. Most references I have seen indicate that the 109F-4 should climb almost twice as fast as a P40E. Also the six 50cal on the P40E seem much more effective than the eight guns on the P47D (have both set to 300meters). It looks like the P47D has much more dispersion. The P40E also seems to hang with the 109F's in vertical maneuvers. P40E feels over powered to me.

I had no prob climbing over P40s at all. Keep your climb speed at about 270 and you should be able to pull away nicely, and dont make it too tight of a spiral, concentrate more on gaining altitude over him. Also Planes dont seem to hang so long in the verticle, so only use hammerheads if you are sure you ahve a descent energy advantage.

Try QMB flying a me262-1a against some P51's If you don't dive out to gain speed they'll eat you alive. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

This may well sound rediculous....

but, What's "QMB" stand for?

P40 all version were known to be able to climb better in sustain fast speed climb than A6M2 or A6M5.
Sources : Erik Schilling fighter pilot of AVG Flying Tigers.

Before you start to flame me, i must higlight that P40 could only climbe better in FAST SUSTAIN climb so in aerobatics the Zero was better.

Thus i guess the problem is the same with 109, maybe at fast speed the P40 can catch the 109F but at high angle the 109 should escape.

perhaps you started your spiral at too low of a speed with a faster p40 coming in?

the situation is important.

I flew a 109F last night and had enough separation - I hit combat flaps, went into spiral climb and watched him fall away attempting to come up at me.

Key is to have enough separation - those .50's have quite a spray.

Not posting just for the fun of it. The P40E when loaded is like 8400 lbs with 1150hp. The 109F-4 is about 6395 lbs with 1350hp. Now which do you think is going to climb faster? It takes the P40E around 13 minutes to get to 20,000 ft and the 109F-4 around 7.5 minutes. I think the patch either slowed the 109F-4 way down or gave the P40E one heck of a boost. The P40E should be able to dive very well its 2000lbs heavier but in offline play the dang thing really hangs on when chasing the 109 uphill.

Why's the P-40E model so damn fckng slow??? It hardly gets above 250mph indicated on the deck... it should be almost as fast as a 109F IIRC but in FB even an I-16 can catch up /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif . In 1.0 it had some 300mph IAS on the deck... even that was too slow.
And right, it climbs better now. Got some 3000+ft/min climbs... dunno if it's wrong or not. At least they fixed that axplosion thingy /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif - but still I find the P-40s, as well as B-239, the "torchiest" planes in FB. MiG-3 are tanks compared to these 2 planes... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif That must be wrong. I rather think the 40 could stand some punch...

~S! Wiley:

Found some info at: http://www.P-40warhawk.com/links/links.htm;

a partial copy relative to the E model,

"The P-40E was powered by one 1150 hp Allison V-1710-39 twelve-cylinder Vee liquid cooled engine. Maximum speed was 335 mph at 5000 feet, 345 mph at 10,000 feet, and 362 mph at 15,000 feet. Initial climb rate was 2100 feet per minute. An altitude of 20,000 feet could be attained in 11.5 minutes. Service ceiling was 29,000 feet. Maximum range was 650 miles (clean), 850 miles (with one 43 Imp gal drop tank), 1400 miles (with one 141.5 Imp gal drop tank). Weights were 6350 pounds empty, 8280 pounds normal loaded, and 9200 pounds maximum. Dimensions were wingspan 27 feet 4inches, length 31 feet 2 inches, height 10 feet 7 inches, and wing area 236 square feet"

Thes reason I show the above is to illustrate a quick and dirty way ( close but not exact) to give you converted IAS at S.L. is to reduce the TAS at 5,000 but 1 % per thousand feet.

Therefore one would expect the machine to indicate about 318 mph at S.L.

No idea about the variables that may have effected the machine's max IAS in this model. But in the field these weren't "showroom" machines. The most logical thing I can think of is Av gas available, in RL, to these pilots. The allisions liked 130 octane gas which was not available in Russia, e.g the engine wouldn't produce its rated H.P with dirty 87 oct or 100 oct.

Just a theory, but seems reasonable if the foregoing was included in the FM?

Regards to all.

I hear stuff like this all the time. Especially when one has bleed his E, tries to climb, and some diving p40 with tons of E climbs up and rips him apart.

Then a comment like 'that p40 was uber'...

Maybe this didnt' happen to you - but posting enery states would be more helpful since we all know a p40E can't out climb a 109F-4 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
