Hey guys,

A lot of things have been said since I first posted about PF at E3. I thought this list would be helpful to sum up the features.

1. The water has been completely re-worked and now has many levels of sophistication. We now have swells, whitecaps, reflections and better color (more blue) and animation. Oleg said the waves were not finished and will look even better later on. Ilya said the water color has just been started and will be tweaked further. Also, there will be a few more notches above the Perfect water setting you see now. Of course, they can be lowered for better frames etc..

2. The clouds are being improved. Bigger and more of them to simulate the scary weather of the Pacific Ocean.

3. The draw distance will be farther out to show islands and ships better.

4. There are now soldiers manning mortars, AA guns on ships and vehicles etc...they are low poly but add more realism. They may or may not become animated. Yet to be decided.

5. Aircraft carriers are totally HUGE and look awesome! Scaled to real world size. Good luck sinking these suckers. I was told there will be 9 different types of carriers.

6. There will be plenty of maps to choose from. Pearl, Midway, Phillipines, Southern China, Pellilue, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Wake,Tarawa, Southern Japan (Lets just say there will be many cool places) Also, Ilya says that he has so many good references and actual recon photos of the islands that he has been able to place buildings in their actual locations as in WWII.

7. Don't count on elevators being used on carriers. No real time to program this apparently. However, on mission start there will probably be something like the first 4 planes having there wings down and locked for takeoff. Everyone else has to unfold theirs prior to takeoff. So, yes folding wings will be featured.

8. Ilya also said that canopies will open and close.

9. Oleg also told me that he prefers Nvidia's drivers for PF over ATI for now. Matter of fact the Demo was running on a GeForce 6 6800 vid card. The drivers are still very young and not super stable, but I saw a lot of cool games running on both ATI X800 and Geforce 6 6800 very smoothly. Especially the new Star Wars games that are coming out.

10. Also, it doesn't look like there will be a CFS4 from M$.

11. Kamikaze missions will be featured, but no Ohka in initial release. Also, some Japanese pilots may not have parachutes and try to crash into whatever American pilot is nearby. This may or may not be programmed, but is being considered.

12. Pitch and Roll of the carrier may or may not be modelled. No decision on that yet they told me. That may require a huge re-working of the code.

13. Planeset. I really don't know the final planeset and don't want to get into trouble on this. So, suffice to say there will be 40+ flyable including the Beaufighter and probably around 100 aircraft in total. Plus a few hundred new objects. Also, ILya said there will be plety of flying boats in theatre. I have no idea if any flying boats will be flyable.

14. Stand-Alone vs. Expansion: It will definitely be a stand-alone product to start. Whether or not it can also be an expansion or maybe done as a Gold Version box set has NOT been decided yet.

15. All of the pics I posted of PF at E3 can be downloaded from here: http://www.il2center.com/Burnin/e3pics.zip

16. With regards to Frame Rates and System Requirements. The new water will indeed drop frames if cranked all the way up. Other then that the rest of the sim will need similar hardware to FB:AEP. Remember though, it's always good to buy the fastest hardware you can afford.

17. Carriers will be present on the Dogfight Maps, but won't be able to move. This is a software limitation that was built into IL-2 soiurce code a long time ago and changing it will delay the entire project. COOPS everything can move as in FB:AEP.

18. Carrier Landings will be a challenge, but with practice will become easy. LSO's will be modeled in some form, but like has already been said, the actual implementation has not been decided yet. Carrier landings are super fun!

19. Flak smoke and tracers effects are probably not going to be changed at all from what you are used to in FB:AEP.

My overall impression is that PF will be a huge hit and we will all get to re-enact the great battles of the Pacific like never before. So, sit back relax, fly AEP to death and be patient. Q4 will be here before you know it.

I reserve the right to update this list in the future and nothing said here is canon unless Ilya or Oleg confirm it. These are just one fan's reporting of what I learned at E3.

In regards to the Carriers included in PF, Types may be the same as Classes. That would mean that we could potentially see way more than nine carriers.

For instance, the Yorktown Class included 3 carriers - CV5 Yorktown, CV6 Enterprise and CV8 Hornet.

The US launched and deployed 141 Air craft carriers during WWII, most of which were CVE's and CVL's. But I kind of doubt that we'll see all 141 of them in PF. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

17. are we able to build DF-maps with carriers to use them like bases or are they only available if the DF-mission was created from developers?? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

19. bad news http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Can we use the new groundtroops also in DF-Maps and are they able to rewspawn like static ships, artillery and tanks?

Was the D-day stripes on the P-38 and the C-47 defaultskins removed in the pacific? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Thanks for your dedication in getting screenshots and reports from E3 to the PF community.

I'm wondering who was your source for #10? Someone at one of the Microsoft exhibits? In your opinion, what does that bode for the long term future of World War Two combat flight simulations? Thank heaven that we have Oleg, his talented designers at Maddox Games, Luthier, the 3rd Party Modelers, etc. Otherwise things would look very bleak.

14: Damn shame when you have the huge potential of what if scenerio's and a huge planeset in FB/AEP. I do hope they expand on this and merge the two. Seems completely absurd not too!

Okay 190's and 109's weren't out there but people have been screaming for a Med map and since most people now adapt the maps to a chosen field of conflict it would be a waste not to have Med capable planeset! 109's, 110's etc. You really could have large Med conflicts using the Pacific adaptable maps?

Very short flying campaign for Kamikaze... but extremely looong ceremonial aspect with lots of saki and geisha's for immersion effect... thats who Luthier was recruiting in those E3 pics http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif...I'll bet it was fun in the motion-capture phase of developement...

I am thinking that *maybe* the new little "Featurettes" like open canopies may make FP and FB not compatible. This could ignite a furious WAR among the flighty simmers.

I say....Compatibility First priority, little featurettes second.

Thanks for a good recap, Burnin. Like many, I'm not sure whether "stand-alone" means AEP a/c can't or won't be added to the planeset. Since P-38s, P-39s, P-40s, P-47s and Buffaloes all had immense roles in the PTO, aren't they likely to be included?

I haven't seen a full plane list yet. Maybe this question has been answered on another thread.

Yes, FP will bring in many planes from FB...or they would have to modd them from beginning (not likely).

FP Stand Alone means you don't need FB to install and play FP <STOP>. FP has always been considered a Stand Alone product.

FP Compatible means FB planes will work in FP provided you have both installed. Hopefully this includes FB maps and surface units. This is what 777 refers to as "not sure yet."

Stand Alone and Compatible are not mutually exclusive. FP will be Stand Alone. We just hope FP and FB will be also be Compatible too. -- ie...FP Stand Alone *and* Compatible with FB.

Right on Luthor...thats what I'm hoping. I'm counting on the fact that the PTO will draw more people into the game but the ability to also addon the FB portion of the game into the PTO (and vice versa really!) will be of great value and benefit.

Guys,

Use your brain a little and stop trying to read too much into what I said. Stand alone means just that. It can function on it's own. Compatable with AEP means they are combined. There is absolutely no way P-38's and P-39's WON'T be included in PF so chill. You will all get the planes that need to be in the Pacific.

I personally want to see PF include FB:AEP simply so we can get the new water effects on the AEP maps and can have carriers in the Gulf of Finland, the English Channel and that new Desert map seen in the Beta for a pretend Med action.

But I will give you a nugget of info. From what I saw and what I said above including AEP in PF is not a programming challenge, but more of a production cost issue. Chew on that for a bit. And if you can't figure out what I just said you need to not post on this board anymore.

That's clear enough.
Most of us didn't attend E3, and don't have time to read every thread. So we ask questions that may have been answered earlier.
