Maybe this has been mentioned before but having flyable reconnaisance aircraft would be a fun addition to Forgotten Battles, Pacific Fighters and/or Battle Of Britain.

As far as Forgotten Battles goes the German Storch would be fun. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Cessna Birddog used extensively by the allies in WWII?

In Pacific Fighters I for one would love to be able to fly any number of seagoing recon aircraft like the American PBY or its Japanese counterpart.

For online realism servers or offline reconnaisance missions this would be great fun. Using your stealthy piloting skills to remain unnoticed while flying as a forward observer or photographic reconnaisance would add a new aspect to the game.

Reconnaisance aircraft like the Storch or Birddog would please the "Bush Pilot" crowd as well http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

To take this a step further I envision an entire addon or standalone game that could revolve entirely around flying reconnaisance, forward observation, forward air controller and supply aircraft. Triggers could be set to register a supply delivery upon full stop landing or friendly fighters and ground attack aircraft could be vectored to points on the battlefield as required.

Just dreaming up ideas while I'm idle.

Sincerely,
SodBuster43

Fw~189 would be the most Fun to Fly. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

Useful for Easter Front campaign, and hysterically was used as ground attack too (can carry bombs).

spitfire or mossie recon online
let the luftyboy climb up, then nail the throttle and race away http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

spitfire recon would require guns being taken off, maybe adding extra fuel tanks in wings

Marc Marbot made an excelent Pipper L-4H Grasshopper and Leonardo Leite "Kirodus" is maping and texturing the baby. The model is awesome for this recon bird and soon i'm sure will have it flyable http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Would it be worth splitting things into recon (e.g. Ju86R, Spitfire PR, etc) and army coop (Storch, Lysander and the like)?

I remember the only sim air recon was given it's real importance was Pacific Air War. Would be good to see it implemented in Pacific Fighters.

Great idea. A flyable Polikarpov U2-V/PO-2 would be nice too- modelling the cockpit for one of these would not be the most taxing project on earth.
Landing a Storch backwards on a carrier as it passes you is always good for a bit of light relief in CFS2 (sorry). http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Any chance that the recons planes could call in artillery or naval gun fire.
It would be interesting to callin and correct the indirect fire from a plane.

Don't forget the Ar234B-1, Ar240A-0, Bf109F-5/6 Bf110C-5, Bv141B-0, Do17P-1, Do215B-4, Hs126B-1, Hs130E-0, Ju88D series, Ju88T-1/3, Ju188D/F/T, Ju388L series and Me261. And thats just the luftwaffe stuff.

Cheers,

Excellent idea! So when you go to configure your particular aircraft, say a Lockheed F-5E, instead of selecting a weapons option, you get to choose the camera 'fit', lens focal length, etc. The acccuracy, or otherwise, of your recon photos could then directly affect the outcome of the subsequent mission on the target, or whether another attack there is called for (to mop up).

Also, as we (Oleg) seem to be working on a Beaufighter, how about a recon version? They had them in Malta, but then my dream is for a 'Battle for Malta' version of Il2, so I'm biased.

The Po-2/U-2VS cockpit is almost done and will be in game soon. As for getting other planes flyable, don't suggest the ideas, get 3DS Max and make them! Because the modelers will only do the models they want to do. I've been trying to get the storch flyable for awhile. We may get the L-4 though. Urubu was doing it last I heard.

Why do you want a flyable Storch?

What will you do with it?

It's nothing but a clay pidgeon for AA and any enemy aircraft.

If we had a good mission builder it might be possible to fly recons and then have comm triggers to order attacks with coordinates for bombing and strafing aircraft.

You'd enjoy flying the 182S Cessna in the FS2004 better. You'd have great navs, and you could do something with it that makes sense.

I don't have all the good ideas...so maybe you can explain WHY? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gif

Well, Urubu and I were talking about the pilots seat in the Fi-156 and L-4. But there was also an observer's seat.

How would you guys like this? It would move like a gunner, and in the observer's seat for Recon missions. Then, if you hit ctrl F1, it'll bring you to a binocular view. clicking while using the binocular view would mean that that area has had recon. Something like that. That anyway is what we've discussed with Urubu.

Basically, these are the missions that would be possible with the Storch:

Artillery Spotting
Recon
SaR for downed pilots

All those would be a lot of fun. We're getting a flyable PBY, remember, and while it did do some bombing, those 3, especially the last 2, were at the top of its service list for many years. Later on they became more of a fighting flying boat, but its original design is for the above 3 reasons. Why do I want it? Because we can. It's never too late to dream...

Radio log of SodBuster43 as his PBY cruises the Midway island map http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

"This is Strawberry-9 reporting...many bandits heading Midway...over."

(time goes by)

"This is Strawberry-9 reporting...enemy ships spotted map sector C3...dropping down to get a closer look...over."

(time goes by)

"This is Strawberry-9 reporting...enemy carriers spotted map sector B2...decks are full of aircraft...over."

(time goes by)

Red team members worry: "We haven't heard from SodBuster43 since that 3 carriers report"..."Maybe he had to duck into the clouds to avoid enemy fighters."

(Meanwhile a Japanese reconnaisance aircraft reports to the blue team)

"This Kawasaki-9 reporting...enemy carrier spotted map sector J9...possible ship identification; Yorktown...over."

(The stage is now set for a major battle to unfold http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

i would like to have ReconFighters in the game.

camera equipted Spitfires, Mustangs, Lightnings, Bf109s , Fw190s , Yak9s.

they should have a total new kind of AI , so that they would try NOT to go in a fight but to reach their target waypoint.

flyable would be nice http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif . if you hit the "camera trigger" over the target , you would get a "mission accomplished" message - but you would have to land an a own base to win the mission http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
the photos should be saved in the game folder like the screenshots.

BUT , that will not happen http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif - much to much work. perhaps an idea for the comming BoB http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Flyable 4 planes:
-Arado 196 floatplane (was present also on Bismarck)
-Fiesel 156 Storch (amazing FM which can actually fly backwards with mild wind)
-Blohm und Voss 141 (unique asymetrical bird)
-Focke Wulf 189 Uhu (best view, excellent flight)

Fw-189, Fi-156, L-4, U-2, lysander all were in development at some time for Il-2, non were finished as flyable, though.

Over a year before Il-2 came out I told Oleg to make sure the framework was there in Il-2 to simulate having a black and white photo-recon camera, is english was not too good back then...
