"We've got the finest tanks in the world. We just love to see the German Royal Tiger come up on the field".
- Lt. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. Febuary 1945.

"One day a Tiger Royal got within 150 yards of my tanks and knocked me out. Five of our tanks opened up on him at ranges of 200 to 600 yards and got 5 or 6 hits on the front of the Tiger. They all just glanced off and the Tiger backed off and got away. If we had a tank like that Tiger, we would all be home today."
- Sgt. Clyde D. Brunson, US Army, Tank Commander, February 1945

"The best fighters I met in combat were the American P-51 Mustang and Russian Yak-9U. Both of those types obviously exceeded all Bf109 variants in performance, including the 'K'. The Mustang was unmatched in altitude performance, while the Yak-9U was champion in rate of climb and maneuverability."

Well, I for one tried to be objective - 2 British planes, 2 Americans and one German...

I doubt if many people are deliberately avoiding planes from other countries.

Much of their success has to do with their application as well.

Very subjective in all. Do I look at production numbers? Production span? Performance figures? Kill/death ratio?

All of it can be debated. I have "MY" favorites, but that doesn't mean they were the best-in-class.

Bomber - B-17 (No Argument about it)

Night Fighter - Me-110G models. (Langcaster / Buffalo pilots feared it the most).

Escort - Mustang (Hellcats were the best escorts in the pacifics).

There are so many factors (year, effect on war, amount of action seen, at what altitude?, etc.) but in a general sense (excluding Me-262 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif):

Fighter: Spitfire
Bomber: B-25
Recce: Mosquito
Fighter Bomber: FW-190
Escort: P-51
Naval: F-4U Corsair

Overall: FW-190 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/354.gif

The first two were hard, the next four were easy. I have three US, two UK, and one GER. I don't think the Japanese made the best of anything, nor do I think the Italians made the best of anything. This is not to say they didn't have great aircraft at times. The Soviets also had some great aircraft but I think they are too specialized and the construction quality too poor for me to consider any the best.

Seriously

Fighter - Right, where do I start - umm Spitfire, 109, FW 190, LA7 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Bomber - Lancaster, B17
Recce - No Idea whatsoever - there were several High alt versions of the spit one even got up as far as 50 000 ft so I'll go with the spit! honourable mention- JU 86 (was this a recce plane? can't rememeber)

Fighter Bomber - easy FW-190
Night Fighter - Heinkel He 219 (not mentioned much but feared nevertheless)
Escort - Would love to say Spit, but I'm gonna go with P51 for its range
naval aircraft - uhh not a clue -- Seafire!

OK OK I know I've got more than one plane in some cartegories but the way I see it, it aint always the plane - a lot depended on the pilot... so i suppose what I'm trying to say is , yeah the technology is one thing but ion the hands of an inexperienced pilot... take the 109 as an example - ground torque etc.

Anyways, just my bit of fun....

Best Fighter: Tough to say...B-239 is one of my favs. However, late model FW190s or La7s would be best fighters. Can't count out P51s or even the Centauro!

Bomber: British bombers like the Lancaster or B-17 were important. Maybe B-29 for best
design.

Recce: Dunno, C6N1 Saiun did a good job in the later pto.

Fighter-Bomber: FW190 or Typhoon. Probably FW190 because it was operational longer.

Night Fighter: Ki-45 Toryu (because I like it)

Escort: P51 for Later war A6m2 for early war.

Naval Aircraft: Easily the H8K Emily the Best Flying Boat of the war (And Hunde you said the Japanese never made the best of anything?)Had many more of these been built..the PTO would have been a lot more interesting. (As in bye bye American subs..which destroyed Japan's shipping, which severely weakened Japan.)

Huck, even though development followed a similar timeline, the FW-190 actually was used about a year earlier (Aug/Sep. of '41) than the Typhoon (don't have time to look up exact date right now) in any significant form. The Typhoon had alot of teething troubles, especially with engine troubles, and the project was almost cancelled at one time. Actually I have read that it was the appearance of the low-level FW-190 raiders that helped keep the Typhoon program going.

bcus the allies had no answer in 44/45
so thats why its overlooked and banned from the servers BUT IT IS THE BEST

have to disagree with ya here bro...it was NOT the BEST cause

First: it came into the battle far too late, when the Allied air forces had reached formidable capacity.

Secondly: its engines were a constant source of trouble, frequently failing after no more than 12 hours.

Third: it was utilized inappropriately for far too long by hitler.

and last....it's a jethttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Yeah, it almost flies like a Yak-3 or an La-7, so the allied players are afraid of it. "Oh my, what would happen if those European nazi players would have a plane that could stand up to one of our hot-rods?!" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif (j/k!)

My list:

Fighter (day) - FW-190A+D/P-47D/Bf-109G, they were easy to produce, relatively cheap and they were used in huge numbers.

Fighter (night) - He-219, it was fast, nimble and had an awesome array of weaponry.

Fighter (intercept) - Me-163, it had the speed to climb up to a bomber formation, the weapons to shred them to bits in mere seconds and the ability to turn its own pilots into smouldering heaps of jelly in minutes. What more could you want?

Fighter (escort) - P-51D, amazing range, good firepower and above average dogfight capabilities. The perfect escort fighter.

Fighter (bomber) - FW-190A+F/P-47B+D, the masters of the fighter/bomber group. They could haul an amazing array of firepower into an area, dump their entire load over enemy positions in an instant, get riddled with hundreds of flak rounds, and still have the juice to fend off and shoot down enemy fighters .

Bomber (strategical) - B-17, cheap, reliable, easy to maintain and above average range. It got its crew back alive. Great bomber.

Bomber (tactical) - Ju-88, it was used in all sorts of roles. Extremely accurate bomber, amazing firepower, great as a heavy fighter and it got its crew back alive.

Recon - Mosquito, amazing speed, good armament and reliable.

I'd agree with you for most of the list, except Mossie is IMHO the best night fighter, there wasn't much that German NF airmen feared more then this faster, more nimble and well armed NF...

Even though the He 219 IMHO scores much better on the sinister looking appearance board. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Fighter - Spitfire
Bomber - Lancaster
Recce - PRU Spitfire
Fighter bomber - Typhoon
Night Fighter - Mosquito
Escort - Mustang
Naval Aircraft - Hellcat

Explanations, well here goes:

Fighter: The Spitfire, a 1930s airframe, was so adaptable that it not only remained competative during WWII, it remained in service well into the post-War period serving in the Malayan campaign. Plus it mounted the most significant engine of the entire war.

Bomber: The Lancaster bombed with accuracy at night delivering large payloads with the aid of sophisticated electronic devices years ahead of those used in any other craft whilst requiring no escort.

Recce: The Photo Reconaissance Unit used specially adapted Spitfires to survey German positions throughout the war. They flew with near impunity at extreme altitudes and high speeds. Plus they were a cool shade of blue.

Fighter Bomber: 4x20mm and 8x60lb rockets? No explanation needed, really.

Night Fighter: The Mosquito not only attacked German bombers, it also shot down many German night fighters whilst on Intruder raids over Germany. The wooden wonder, when coupled with British dominance of radar technology was the best equipped nightfighter by a loooong way.

Escort: Obviously the p-51. A highly competative fighter with extreme range. Not to mention good looks and a stonking fine engine.

Naval Aircraft: Hey, looks aren't everything! Whilst the Wildcat fought tenaciously, the Hellcat cleared the Pacific of Japanese carrier-borne aircraft.

Should a revised list of catagories be posted? It seems like people are adding some of their own.

By far the most advanced design to come out of WWII
was not a jet, but a piston engined bomber.

The B-29.

Hands down it was the wave of the future. So advanced
the Soviets copied it screw for screw, rivet for rivet.
The airframe design pioneered the ground work
for modern avaition, the Boeing 707 shared
the basic airframe as did modern Soviet
airliners, bombers and transports.

To this day aircraft are being built with B-29
technology incoperated in them.

By the way, the most important transport plane
of WWII seems to have been missed.

The C-47/DC-3.

I guess as a seaplane you have to have fought in the PTO to be seriously considered, judging by the lack of Sunderlands, Do-24s etc. 'round here. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

PS. The Beaufighter gets my vote for torpedo bomber - fast, manoeuvrable, tough, and with one helluvva punch on 'er! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

The Beaufighter packs a punch no matter what its doing. 4 20mm cannon, 6 0.303's or rockets plus bombs or torpedo's. It earned the nickname Whispering Death for a good reason.
