the Dev updates often have in-game screenshots

they always seem to be non AF or AA screenshots

its soooo noticable & really lowers their quality

is this done in some sort of way to keep expectations lower
or
so they cant be accused of over-hyping their products ?

id understand if that was the reason but personally id love to see in-game screens maxed out in visual quality : )

Post super-duper screenshots like that, and when game barely works on a lot of our systems, people will rant and rant and rant.

i was noticing that too badsight, with aa and af off those carrier cables look so horable thick as a landing gear strut and jagged.

Time for the beta testers to upgrade thier pcs http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I would like to see a short movie of PF carrier landings on highest res, with the tilting decks. I also want to see with the tilting decks online if planes parked on the carriers are going to hover how cfs2 did which IMO was a total immersion killer

I heard that when they turned on AA and AF the FPS averaged 2 FPS http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Go easy on em!
They might be using Nvidia cards http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thought the idea of screenies was to show a new game off at it's best.
My mistake I guess http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif

They also have perfect water turned on in all those screens. Could be the answer

They probally have:
Pentium III 1.4
128 SDRAM
Radian 7200 32mb

And try running perfect water then switch the AA and AF on. Maybe they should turn it all on, and even thought it runs at 2fps record it then take a screen shot, we wont notice the low fps cause its a screen shot

What the **** is "AA and AF"? I've heard it referenced about a dozen times with no explaination or detail about what it is. I assume that it's some sort of graphic setting.

WUAF_Badsight

AA = Anti Analising

AF = Anistropic Filtering

these are settings that most people with moders GPU's have

the settings turned on make all images appear smooth edged , less blocky

look at the edges of the plane in this pic

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/forgotten_battles/250604/land3.jpg

jagged edges look horrible compared to this pic

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/9464/Compans_Hurri3.jpg

smooth edges all round = much higher quality screen shot

Its generally assumed that most gamers know what AA and AF are.

AA = Anti Aliasing

The end result of an anti-aliasing level is that the edges between objects (i.e. the bounary layer between an aircraft and the background) are smoothed so that you don't see a jagged edge where the object leaves off and the background starts. There are different levels. Most ATI cards go in 2, 4, and 6 as I recall. The nVidia ones work differently and go 2, 4, 6, 8 and with some variations (as I recall). Generally, the ATI AA implementation is considered better in terms of the performance hit that it incurs (i.e. its much less than the same quality level on the nVidia solution - the nVidia solution has more options as well so there is no overall winner).

AF = Anistropic filtering. This is a little more complex but objects that are far away in a scene, or an object thats surface is only partially visible due to an obscure angle usually end up with blurred or fuzzy textures. To increase the detail level of those textures the card makes multiple passes to try and sharpen the textures and increase the detail level. Flat on objects look virtually indentical but objects in the distance or at odd angles retain sharpness and good detail. Again, multiple settings and types available for ATI and nVidia cards.

Someone, please correct if I got any of the details wrong. I have done considerable reading on the subject however and the basics should be correct http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Goodness knows why they don't turn these things on for their screen shots. My fairly good gaming rig with an older 9700Pro runs perfect mode and 2x AA and 4x AF (performance mode) at 32+ FPS average.

Badsight,
Was that picture taken on perfect settings? It sure looks better than my excellent settings.

Also, if you have the time, how the heck do you post pictures. Do you have to put them in the signature?

WUAF_Badsight

no it was taken with a cheap Powercolour GF4 Ti 4200

using the 45.25 driver

AA on 4x as well as the AF

i since have gotten a Radeon 9600 XT which gives me 5 fps more average with higher resolution & more AA & AF set (8x AA & 8X AF)

Hot damn! My graphics settings are on perfect, and yet my game doesn't look all that different from the developer screenshots, except that mine are in ten twenty four by seven sixty eight instead of eight hundred by six hundred.

I have got to check out this anti aliasing thing. I probably have it turned off.

What resolution was that picture taken in, Badsight?

WUAF_Badsight
06-27-2004, 10:38 PM
it was taken in 1024

but my new ATI is better at AA & AF again so i run on 1152 now
