View Full Version : The eastern front fighter the germans feared in 1942

In the dynamic campaign I'm currently playing I've reached the start of December 1942 flying German. If this game is accurate in the mix of planes that I've encountered, the one I really fear is the P39N-1.

Run into lots of some types in 1942, a breakdown of the ones I shot down :

I-16: 12
LaGG-3 S4: 11
Hurricane: 6
Yak-1: 4
MiG-3UD: 4
P39-N: 4
P40: 2
I-153P: 2
I-153/M62: 2
MiG-3: 1
MiG-3 UB: 1
Yak-7B: 1
La-5: 1
LaGG-3 IT: 1

I haven't run into many La-5's at all, but the one I shot wasn't as troublesome as I expected. Out of this mix the Airacobra is the one that gives me worst trouble.

I have not had a bash yet with American planes but they're very popular and I've been looking at them (so far only flown Russian and German planes). My next campaign will be Russian but heavy on the Lend Lease planes, with as much P-39 in it as I can mix.

First P-39 based regiments were formed in the spring of 1943 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
But P-39 did see a little bit of action in 1942 - more like a trials then combat.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

So far you`ve seen only the LA5 (maybe LA5f maybe). The LA5fns etc are a tougher kettle of fish, but then again, I have no idea how well the AI will utilise their abilities against you.

In the I16, the LW AI tend to use their abilities very well against me....

Whenever I fly offline missions in the 109 my heart always sinks a little when I catch sight of the P39.

Bad Oleg http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I encountered them on two missions only, one was a group of four and the other IIRC was just a pair.

The group of four was supported by another four I-16's against eight bf-109G2 and I've never had to refly so many times. In the end I turned to the R6 variant with the three cannons and had a lucky run (after being shot or crashing about eight times and knowing exactly where when and how we would engage). More in '43 you say? Bad news for me. Perhaps I'll have the G6 by then. I just ran into more La-5's last mission. They are good but the P-39's are better.

Gotta give credit were credit is due.

The Mig 3U, 1942 was a hot little airplane. It was all I flew online before FB, and it's still a big favorite of mine...and I know better then to tangle with one on the deck.

mmm, don't know if MiG~3U ever fired guns in anger, but it saw some intercept missions that panicked the Germans into stopping their high altitude recce missions.

You have to know that the Luftwaffe never offered any high altitude strategic bombing Threat which the MiGs were all designed for. A 3rd Party "fantasy" strategic campaign generator [with He~177...Flyable of course http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif] can offer such a Threat however, and then if Germany did launch a real bombing campaign the MiG~3U would have been rushed into production warts and all, as the other low altitude VVS fighters were pushed out the door to face the threat of German air forces low over the battlefield.

MiG~3U is really not as important as the other much larger and faster experimental MiGs that were being built at the time, but the Germans failed to present a high altitude bomber Threat in any numbers to sweat over about, so the experimental MiGs were put on a low priority for development and zero priority for production.

This is where a "fantasy" campaign with Fb109Z as long range high altitude escort fighter would Rule!

I~224, one of a series of high altitude experimental MiGs going far beyond MiG~3 and 3U. These usually had engine "difficulties," as did He~177, which also needs to be Flyable. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

this kinda makes why mig didnt make more planes in the war... also why after the war they excelled in jet fighter production, they had more experience with high-altitude designs.

there were, what SIX total MiG-3Us built??

Add to the trash list of planes that are an embarassment to the set:

Bi-1, MiG-3U, I-185, Bf109Z

I read about three Mig 3U built could be wrong.

But indeed I wonder what these planes do in the game. Marketing department thank you for this BS

Well, real life combat pilots loved to get their hands on friendly or captured enemy experimental combat planes. This may be one way to show on the internet who is a military aviation enthusiast and who has zero knowledge of WW2 and aircraft.

One method always works:: watch closely those flight "simmers" who make claims to "like" airplanes but then trashes them.

Another way is by contradiction. Do~335 is a popular "fantasy" combat plane, but nobody claims [unless challenged as here] that Do~335 should not be in FB. Do~335 has successfully captured the computing pubic's imagination.
