I use the hat control on my joystick. Very annoying and most difficult to operate in non-padlock servers (which seem to be most which is kind of annoying for me I suppose) but I live with it.

I don't prefer the hat switch only, but it's what I use. Don't have TackIR or anything else, but from what I have heard on TiR, it's like a complete makeover for FB in terms of enjoyment.

There are a number of threads on it extolling it's virtues and it really does seem like a great piece of work. I myself plan on getting it at some point in the future, but for now it's the good old hat for me, no mouse looking or any other kind of panning software.

I use the hatswitch aswell, it can be annoying at times and I'm leaning towards buying a Track IR set, or something similar.

I use Freelook which i hope you mean in using the Mouse to look around.

It took me about 3 days to fully get used to using the Mouse with my left hand and Stick in the right, but I was so annoyed at being handicapped by the hatswitch that I learned it. Hatswitch is just not good enough for online fighting, especially against TIR users.

I would say that save TIR, Mouse looking is by far the best option when situational awareness and immediate access is paramount. And it`s cheap http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

p.s I do have ONE command on my hatswitch on the stick that allows me instant view forward with a flick of my thumb- I always forget to mention that.

None of the above. I use mouse emulation on a joystick POV hat (saitek X45 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

I use a combination of the hat switch and a belkin trackball mouse (which was about $3). The stick is set up for snap view and the mouse for pan. Using both in conjunction lets me track and follow enemies, but snap to a forward, rearward or instrument view at will.

Wow, only 6% use NewView... that's shocking! Easily the best program I have downloaded for FB.
I use NewView with two saitek cyborg gold joysticks. Looking around is so intuative; I hardly need to touch the keyboard now and only ever use the mouse for map-scrolling and gunner positions.

That's my way too. I don't even know what the default IL2/FB pan snap modes work like anymore. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Me too. I use the microstick mouse emulation on the throttle of my Cougar to pan view. You can adjust the mouse pan speed to suit your preference.
I also use the POV hat on the joystick for snap views and to return instantly to forward view from pan .

I wish everybody would use Track IR then there would be more servers without padlock http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif and then more servers without cockpit off. Cause there aren't enough servers like this at the moment.

I have been using the hat switch with a program called joy to key which transfers the mouse movements to the hat switch for smooth pan. I then use a button on the stick to snap to front view. It works well for me.

I use a combination of hat and microstick (mouse switch on the throttle). I have TIR2 but personally I find it to jumpy to follow or find other aircraft

Man, I really agree with you! I don't want to use cockpit off, though I do like external views to be available, and I'm not too bothered if icons and/or lock ain't on.....but I don't want to fly in a server where the all-seeing view can be used against me. And unfortunately there are, imo, too many servers using it.

I also use TIR (1) and I wouldn't go back. I use my POV hat for TiR controls, rockets & bombs instead.

"I wish everybody would use Track IR then there would be more servers without padlock and then more servers without cockpit off. Cause there aren't enough servers like this at the moment."

we have a pilot in 609IAP that uses just a beat up old microsoft stick and uses keypad to track bandits.

He averages over 2.5 kills a mission in our war which is Full real. He's been doing this since FB came out.

I don't think it's the Trackir that makes full real, full real http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That being said...I have trackir and love it - I picked up TIR2 for christmas - I had TIR1 since the days of no centering in Il2.

It's a great device!

TrackIR!! There really is no substitute...

Matter of fact, if I ever hit the lottery and became an overnight billionaire, I would buy a Trackir for everybody on this board, its just plain good for the future of flight simming. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Didn't expect this much interest in this poll. Thank you all for your feedback. I personally was thinking about TIR2 for a while but just today I tried NewView with two sticks and pedals (one stick is for flying and one for looking around using NewView) and it was the best method for me so far. Give it a try if you have an old analog stick that is lying useless somewhere in the corner like me. For those who don't know, you can download NewView at mudmovers.com.

I mostly use my mouse to look around. Its not jumpy and makes tracking bandits in FR easier.

You missed off one choice:

I have no situational awareness http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Seriously though, I use the hat switch on my joystick.

I keep my left hand on the mouse for looking around. Us BnZers don't need to play with the throttle. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Here are some tips for mouse lookers:
1. Use sensitivity 2.0 or more. 1.0 just wont cut it.
2. Try removing your mouse pad to get more panning space.
3. Bind the right mouse button for "center view" in case you get disorientated or aquire a target in your sights. It's essential for no cockpit servers.
4. If you don't like taking your hand off the mouse to change throttle, you can assign throttle control to the mouse wheel.
