Smoke has been banned in VOW for that very reason. Although to be fair most were only using it to form up after takeoff. But still, it's an immersion killer. Shouldn't be allowed in full real games of any description, but in DF servers with no-cockpit and others allowed then I can't see the harm.

Cheers,

Yeah, I missed that point. Obviously I don't see any harm in using smoke on cockpit off etc... servers. That particular server was fairly FR if I remember, limited icons, cockpit on etc...
Thanks for reminding me SpinSpinSugar http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

why not just send your mates a message saying where you are and would they mind giving you a hand?

Even better if you have TS or similar - you can just say so - even easier than toggling on your air display signals.

Personally i think its redicilous. Thats only my opinion of course, each to their own.... but i wish there was a serverside option to disable it.

When I used to fly with a squad, we used smoke to form up on occassion, but nothing more.

I personally think it's kinda a dweebish tactic but to each their own. I never checked before, but is this a server setting? If not it should be.

You're welcome. But there's not much to come over for. In an act of group insanity Pusher Street on Christiana chose to commit mass suicide today (disclaimer: no people were injured), rather than to give in to government demands that they cease their (illegal) activity. I'm sure it'll be in the "weird stuff from around the world" section on a news channel near you.

Simple, when you see their smoke on, you turn all yours on, watch how quickly they drop using it.

Why is there smoke in the game anyway? If they include smoke, why not fire-engine sirens and bells? Wait, the sound engine couldn't handle it.

You have to look at it like all other aspects of this game. If it is purposely programmed by 1C, and available to all, it is valid. The exceptions, if there is some sort of an 'event' that the rules prohibit smoke, or the server rule prohibits smoke.

My vote, which is not available in your poll, is to make it a server side option.

The bottom line... if it is there, it can be used, unless rules state otherwise. It really does not matter what we, as individuals, think about it. 'You' know that people will do as they please, anyway. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Even if it was a server side option, and set to on, I think there should still be a clarification about when it can, or cannot, be used.

I would not like to see it taken out of the sim. That is for sure. It is helpful as a learning tool. Also, for those that formation fly.

I wish that instead of smoke Oleg had implemented the ability to shoot flares as some WWII pilots used for signals.

Damn! How didn't I think of that? Having it as a server-side option is the perfect solution!
Thanks RealKill, roybaty and Olli72 for bringing that up!
Wouldn't want it taken out of the game, I just wish people would stop turning it on for 10 minutes at a time.

yeah so many keep hitting smoke online when your shooting at them to try to cause lag and for people to see thenm in a distance, Not having an option to turnoff wingtip smoke makes the game look so shady.

Also we need radiator back and forward button

It has it's place...and in battle isnt it. We can debate the merits of open & closed pits for years...even icons..for the visually or monitor challenged.. but tip smoke has no place IMO in battle. Not only can it create lag in less powerfull machines but it is a punks way out... Take it like a man. If you cant evade and turn the tables..or get one of your m8s to assist another way then suck it up and get im next time.

Im gunna make a serious post because i feel strongly about this. From my experience, wingtip smoke does not cause lag. I also believe that the methods people have come up with "to cause lag" are just myths and dont really work. My exp is that ntrk doesnt cause lag. I think more often than not its just the server or the map.

PLANES ARE HARD ENOUGH TO SEE AS IT IS. I think most will agree here.

I dont see the problem with using wingtip smoke to id yourself to a wingman. It really helps on Teamspeak especially on servers where friendly icons are off.

AirBot

Have you considered these things may not cause lag for you because your/your opponent's PC is good enough to handle the extra load? I think someone running on a top-of-the-line PC with lots of RAM and a fast HD will cause no lag saving .ntrks, but someone running a lesser machine might well cause his machine to stutter while it tries to swap virtual memory, write to the HD, or whatever - in effect causing lag.

I actually don't find planes that difficult to see at all, but that's probably because of my detail settings. Point is, smoke is completely unrealistic.
Even then, I'm willing to allow for a brief burst of smoke to id yourself to a friendly. What I don't like is someone streaming smoke for the entire duration of a chase across the whole map.
IMHO, if you want to keep your means of id constantly on, have the courtesy not to ruin the game for the guy behind you, and use nav lights or even the magical 360º landing light to id yourself instead.

Sure it gets me peeved but they are gonna feel lead for doing such.. Sorry, but I voice my own..This is a game to for fun.. If you are vulnerable you die. This is a game of challenge and to devestate the target which is an aircraft after you .. I feel this way in any server. The only time I will break off their six if they are landing at their HOME base..
Now to settle the debate of smoke and graphics is all bull***, I have yet to hear one of you complain about a target you are shooting that has a nasty oil fire or tank leak...Should that too be addressed PUuulleeeeaaaaasee... LOL

I remember using smoke earlier when chased. But there's a trick. You can't use it for long because the attacker will realize you use wingtips smoke. You know when you're about to stall , some trails forms up on your wingtips. For me that was an indication that this plane was at his limits and waited either a stall ,either a dramatic slowdown. You can easily say how much experience the pilot has. The more you see trails , the better chance the pilot is a beginner. So , I was using this kind of a tactic when chased on my Jug. Sometimes worked , but as I said , you have to do a short burst.Otherwise you will show that you use wingtip smoke.
I don't care about smoke , and I can't see how turning on smoke can help you.On a full real server will give away your position if you're on a stealth route in your IL2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
