..and it was awesome as the last time I made there four years ago. Highlight apart from the show itself was actually getting to sit in the cockpit of a spit and play with everthing in there! Hopefully some pictures below if my link works..

hmmm I took about 100 stills and 8 minutes of quicktime movies. Will put them up for download from my webspace later this week and post the link here.

Big thanks goes out to the organisers of this excellent show. For those who can travel to Duxford (near Cambridge, UK) there is a HUGE permanent exhibition of US and British warbirds as well as a couple of hangars open to the public where the real enthusiasts are working on resorations. They have a Yak-3 there in bits right now and the guys who work there on off-show days are very friendly.
The big day to go is ofcourse the Flying Legends weekend that just finished. Maybe next time they'll let me in a hurri (I wish...heheh)

Just got back as well, grinning like an idiot.

*The Jug went up a few notches in my book.
*The griphon engine is offically the coolest sounding off them all (followed closely by the Mustang's. Sorry http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
* the Bearcat is fantastic.
*seeing twenty+ warbirds coming over in formation WILL give anyone goosebumps.

Other highlights: B17's, B25's, P39, Corsairs, Wildcat, Hellcat, Avenger.

i was there too! gotta agree on the griffon engine - those who talk about the gorgeous sound of the merlin engine were probably being overflown by a griffon spit if you ask me... i couldnt even hear the merlins for all the big engined spits.

also, and not trying to start anything here, but although the merlin noise on the spit and mustang is all wrong in sturmovik, it seems to be fairly consistent on the hurricane, which on the ground sounded a lot like its IL2 counterpart!

favourite plane: I-15; i did a double take when i saw that on the flight line. astoundingly manoeuverable.

Also it was incredible to see 4 hurricanes together at once. and countless spitfires! only gripe tho, no classic jets... ive been at previous flying legends airshows when theyve had f-86/mig-15, DH Vampire, Hawker Hunters flying. on the other hand they had plenty of warbirds to fill the afternoon.
also a Bell P-39 Airacobra, which ive never seen flying before. front on you really realise how aerodynamic and low-drag it is, which is an advantage of the mid-engine layout i guess.

Does anyone know why the P-40 cut its display short tho?

I was greedy and went both days, simply the best. Sadly no P38 that would have been fanatastic, as for the P40, it put on an amazing display on saturday, more impressive thean the P39, must have had a minor problem on sunday. Was dissapointing to not see it again as it was one of the highlights on saturday. Best diplay of the day was the pilot of the Bearcat, vertical into loopover, zoom climbs and rolls, fraid you had to be there.

yeah that Bearcat pilot really gave the plane a workout, some of the fastest airshow flybys ive ever seen (without the aid of a jet engine)

I filmed sundays display using a PD 150 DV CAM and I'm hoping to edit the footage in August when I have some down time at work. . I did get some nice usable footage of the P 39 and the Hawker Nimrod though. I also got some nice stuff of the B 17 "Pink Lady" starting its engines as well as the BOB Flight DC 3. Although trying to keep that Bearcat nicely framed was hard work, he was just going too fast. This stuff will keep me going till next year anyway, I've still got a big grin on my face now.

Hi,

I was there, too, and it was fantastic.

Highlights of the show were the Spitfires (of course), the I15 and the P51 flypasts were pretty good too (for the noise!)....and the fact that the weather held off for the most part!

Just a shame that you couldn't get close enough to touch these fantastic machines.

Cheers,
Norris

Yeah! totally agree, i was gagging to get up and look closely at all the lovely spits. Even tried to talk a security guy in to letting me go upto them, no joy http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif the fly by of the 14 spits was excellent, the noise the gripphon makes is so nice, especially when there are 3 of them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Really enjoyed watching the Bearcat entertain us with his acrobatics http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As this was ny first Air Show i am now hooked and will be going more regularly.

Barndoor-

Had a co-worker at Hughes back in the '90s whose nickname was Barndoor. If you hadn't spelled 'organized' with an s, I'd think you'd gone for the local Harley-Davidson dealership's T-shirts (our Barndoor had a collection of H-D T-shirts from every city and country he'd ever visited. He claimed once that his 'Saigon H-D' Tee was a 'Small' that his first 'ex' got in the divorce settlement just to spite him).

How'd you get the handle? And if it is you Ted, how'd you get there from Ft. Huachuca, and what happened to your spelling?

By the way, nice pictures. Looking forward to more.

cheers

Very nice pics!
I was over in Wales in 8th through 11 of July on LLangollen Int. Musical Eisteddfod.
We went just at Duxford airfield from and back to Stansted. I couldn´t attend to the airshow because of the choir competion, so it was very enerving to just pass it on the way from/to airport. Thanx for the pics though, makes me feel a little better. I´m from Sweden, so you guess I´m not having the chance to go to Englands airshows that often.

oh , norris, i noticed your 'chavscum' link at the bottom there... as coincidence would have it, i was mooned by 4 Luton Chavs on the drive back from duxford. unfortunately my farmer friend who was with me did not have his shotgun with him.

I have been before in 98 and 99. In 98 they had a merlin engined 109 painted in Hugarian colours, it did a tail chase display with the P 40 and P 63. (I think I'm right saying the P 63 was witten off in an tragic accident) Okay the 109 was'nt the real deal but I still felt privelaged to see it. I wish I'd recorded both those shows now given the fate of the P 63. Sadly I dont think we will see any real flying 109s/190s, only replicas, if you look at photos of Luftwaffe airfields in 1945 most of the aircraft are in a sorry state. I beleive vast quantities of LW planes were buried in big holes in the ground after VE day. If only we knew then what we know now, we may well have a few more of these flying, they'd also be worth an absolute fortune.

I went too and it was f**king brilliant; almost unreal. We missed the chance to walk 'round the flight line (taking the boy on a tank-ride), so I'll have to talk my wife into going again next year (shouldn't be difficult, she thought it was top too). I've got a shedload of pictures, which I'll post either as attachments (if I can figure it out), or onto my website with a link, but give me a couple of days to get over it.

The Lanc couldn't come, it was too windy for it. It still flies regularly though....I live 10 miles from the base where it is kept, and see it flying at least once a week http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
