View Full Version : Is AC:Syndicate Catalyzing A Move to a More Modern Setting?

Those of you who have seen the AC: Syndicate reveal can probably agree with me that the newest entry in the series is taking some (perhaps risky) measures to make its characters feel like they belong in their place and time. I believe the most notable examples of this are two major things:

1) Traffic System
Carriages can be driven, ridden on, assassinated from, etc. So far, the streets look relatively full of them.

2) Subtle Weapons
Since more modern eras typically do not look kindly upon open-carry policies with weapons, the new protagonists much abandon the larger and more obvious swords/axes/rifles for more concealed arms, such as brass knuckles.

In the past (notably in ACIV's fake "potential setting list) Ubisoft has argued that more modern settings would not be possible due to the necessary rehaul of assets that would have to occur.
My question, therefore, is this: Is this rehaul already occurring?
How far off, really is a carriage from a car? Would it truly be that difficult to swap the two in a more modernized game? Are the Assassins' more subtle looks designed to work in a 1900s setting as well?

It would certainly be risky to move into the 20th century in AC in 2016, but today's reveal seems to make that more possible than ever. Let me know your thoughts- and remember, this isn't so much about whether you'd want a 20th century AC game, but if it would even be possible, given what we know now.

I really hope they don't do anything more recent than this.

The 1860s is as late as you can possibly go and still have anything resembling an AC game. At that time, militaries still mainly used muzzle-loaders (breechloaders existed, but were more of a specialist's weapon), and swords were still present. Any further, and the gameplay would have to resemble Watch_Dogs gunplay + parkour.

I think they've jumped the gun by going this modern. I dont like how AC has kept going forward in History for the most part with every game, we need time skips back and forth. I think the next AC game will go back in time but that means no carriages and a lot of other things wont exist either.

I've been beating the drum for a WW2 setting for years. Would be absolutely excellent.

a carriage is real far off from a car in terms of speed. Remember that this is an open world game, and that means that the faster the vehicles you have, the more optimization you need to do for LOD.

I think this is setting us up for more games in this general time period, definitely, but I would not expect a time where there are even the most primitive of automobiles widely in use.

All of this is pretty applicable to games set in other eras, as riding on horseback requires an LOD solution as much as a carriage does, and concealed weapons are more of an aesthetic variation than a mechanic they've invested in. The launcher would have to go, but cities were smaller and more conducive to unassisted parkour, not to mention clotheslines could support a static version of the same mechanic. They're making their advances very intelligently, nothing would really be wasted if they moved far back two or three games from now.

I don't think so.

Carriage is more altered horse from previous games then predecessor of cars.

And speaking about guns and cold weapons - right now it looks that Jacob will spend most time in London underground where cold weapons and rare small arms are still main armament. Thanks to this specific setting they can still keep system main cold weapon/supporting small arm.

I honestly don't see any great change which would prepare AC for 20th century.
