I didnt vote but was playing IL2 until a month ago.
FB just about fried my desire for this wonderful game, The "patches" the whining.
I've been playing for a couple of years and FB just about killed it for me.
Aces has brought it back to an extent but was playing IL2 online only a few weeks back.
Excellent game.

Got really tired of the sound issues when FB came out but I never went back to IL2 because I liked the new planes. Same goes with AEP - I don't look back - I just want to have fun with the new features. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

I really feel that you are reaching in your attempt to sanctify iL2. Sure it was a good sim and obviously the predecessor to iL2FB, but there is no way in hell that it is a better sim or IMHO even comparable. I think the main reason for your post is that Il2 runs better on your piece of crap comp. and you wants us to make you feel better about the fact that you are to broke to upgrade or get a new one.

Well, IL-2 is where it all began, classic game and all that. No harm in playing it still, but my heart is with FB/AEP.

Oh and:

The orginal il-2 was cooler.

I still think shooting is more realistic in the original il-2. Seems to easy with FB /AEP now.
All guns got a more laser feeling to it. Bullets almost dont fall down anymore.

Remember the old p39 cannon in il-2 for example?
It's about 10 times more easy to get a hit with it now then with the orginal il-2.

Other than that i like FB / AEP more then the old good 'cool' il-2.

I actively played IL2 until the FB Pony patch. Up until then, I thought that IL2 was 90% the game FB was. After that patch however, FB became head and shoulders above it's predecessor and I haven't loaded IL2 since.

Il2 still sounds better, but that's the only advantage it has

I don't play the original IL-2 for a very long time, but its hardly something to forget.

Still, no matter how good FB may be, the sound $ucks huge sweaty donkey balls, and ruined 50% of the whole experience for me.
And don't even get me started on the weapons flares.

If anybody finds a way (very unlikely) to put the old sounds and weapon flares from the original IL-2 back in the game, be sure to tell me.

Cheers.

It's like buying a P4 3GHz system and using a P3 733MHz box instead. Why would anyone do that? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Besides, can fly a 109K4, P-51, P-47, or Spitfire in IL2. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm with most of the others here, although it took AEP to bring me into the fold on a near permanent basis. The old Il-2 Sturmovik FMs were much more demanding (ever tried those long Barbarossa missions with a FFB or any twisty stick with heavy springs?-My wrist would cramp up trying to apply that little bit of right rudder as I tried to keep proper trim and keep up with my AI wingmates), and the sound was, and still is, better.

On the other hand, the gunners on the bombers were ludicrously accurate, and the moment an 'ace' AI came within 1 km of me, friend or foe, I'd swear my engine's performance was cut by what seemed like 20% or more. The AI all had that anal eyeball (they could see me coming from behind and below, so I figured they were equipped with a means of looking through their @ss), and would always roll or dive away as I fired, causing an unrealistic waste of ammo, and the guns (at least MINE) didn't do the kind of damage reported in the pilots' memoirs I'd read.

I did, however, export the single missions and static campaigns to FB by copying them to the appropriate folders in FB. It worked like a charm, and when I fly the MiG-3 mission to take down that FW-189, I don't have to stick to head-on passes so the sniper-gunners don't smoke me anymore. I get shot down in flames less than one out of five tries now.

I'm running the Russian and German Fighter campaigns on FB as a kind of training baseline for CEM, and it's much more enjoyable, because the AI don't have anything like the FM advantages they had in the original. It doesn't take three or four "Reflys" to complete a mission, although I still haven't quite lost my knack for stalling out (and some people said it couldn't be done).

I'd recommend this, if you yearn for the old Il-2 static campaigns.

cheers

Horseback--

Thanks! I had never thought of moving the campaigns and single missions over to FB. They work great. I miss the sound from the original IL-2, but it's nice to no longer have cybernetically-enhanced ninjas as tail gunners on enemy bombers.

I'm still flying Il2 original. There's no way my computer could handle FB, it has enough problems with Il2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Any donations of old video cards, SDRAM chips or processors greatly appreciated. Anyway, I love Il2 and by the time I've finished the offline campaigns it should be time for a new computer. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

My sound for AEP is incredible - light years ahead of where IL2.

I guess I'm the only one so far that does not play the original, although it is still on my hard drive and the shortcut for it is still on my desktop. I don't feel the FM's are up to snuff. Especially when taking of. Way to unrealistic FM taking off. Besides, they are only so many hours in a day. Even if I didn't have issues with the original, I don't have the time to play it. I have too much going on with FB/AEP.

But, I would still have to say, if there were no such thing as FB, the original IL-2 Sturmovik is the best flight sim out there. S!

I'm not very computer literate, so I honestly can't tell you what sound system I have. However, I assume it's "pretty darned lousy," as I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with $35 external Yamaha speakers.

However, I found that the engines sounded much throatier in the original IL-2, and explosions were much more deep and resonant. The sound of a plane slamming into the ground is the most notable difference.

And that is part of what was wrong with IL2, and why FB is better.

Harder is not more realistic. The biggest difficulty that would be present in flying a plane like that, particularly in combat, would be engine management, that was completely automated in IL2, and is still mostly automated in FB. The act of actually flying is not difficult at all.

Many argue take offs and landings, but, that's an entire debate unto itself.

The problem with the IL2 FMs seems to be the drag, or lack of acceleration. All the planes behaved as if they had their proper weight, but half their power, or were pulling drag chutes, or were at 30,000ft, even when on the ground. They didn't "fly", they didn't accelerate, they didn't see the speeds the real things regularly fought at unless they were diving, and they had zero E retention (the LW planes at least). Worst of all, gravity acted quite bizarrely, when it came to diving, all planes suddenly took on the same drag, thrust, and weight. Anything could dive with anything. Was bizarre.

FB, and now AEP are worlds better than IL2 ever was. (at least once Ubi and the community got done with it and the patches started rolling out)

I still play it and use it to get others interested. Its simplier for the new pilot and they can easily go home and d/l the demo. Theres nothing like a flyby on the old sound engine to get your attention.
Still fly my favorite single missions and campaigns.

Well, I never got the same fun from FB that I did from IL2. I think it was the fine static campaigns that helped me really enjoy it. FB has been sadly been reduced to online gaming, for me. I really shouln'd say "sadly" I guess, as I do enjoy the company of the people I've flown with, and still fly with, during the weekends in coops. It's really nice, all things considered.

I continued to play the original IL2, up until earlier this month, when I bought LOMAC. I uninstalled my IL2 for the first time in nearly 2 years. It was and is a fun sim, no doubt. My fond memories from IL2 are so strong that I felt no loss in it's passing into the shadow of LOMAC. It shall always remember the classic that is IL2 Sturmovik.

i have il2/FB too but my system won't run the expansions like BOE and AEP...even FB has a hard time running on my rig...

and i've compared FB to IL2 and i think the focus on fighting is more in FB while il2 focusses more on flying (stalls and spins WAY more easy) and il2 feels more real in it's flight characteristics...

I'm even setting up a new squadron for il2 only (for now anyways ;P )
For me, IL2 is the better one of them...even though FB has far more (way cooler) planes to choose from..
For now, at least until my pc has received a thorough upgrade, i'll stick to il2...and even after that upgrade...i'm sure..

How can IL-2 be better than FB, when it's only part of it?
Hallo, FB contains IL-2! It's its evolution!!!

I play both, by the way: FB on my desktop, and IL-2 on my laptop, just for the sake of playing my first love and, believe me or not, FB ran remarcably better then IL-2 on my laptop, when I tried it (Finnish Gulf map excluded)...

i still fly original 1l2 of course.
the truth is that NOW with the ACP the flight models have gotten more believable and he AI is definatelly top notch.

BUt to the guy that says the flight models in IL2 felt the right weight but half the power and they flew like they were draging a chute..
Thats exactly what i liked about the feeling in those flight models. See,they were 1930's and 40's prop planes, and they felt like such making game play more immersive.

Even now in AEP ,I still find feeling of climbing or diving or accelearating or deaccelearting a bit uninspiring because even tho i see the neddels on the plane's gauges moving i still dont get that feeling the original IL2 has.

We haven't gone nowhere.
The fact is, the enviourment in this forums has become too nUBIfied for our tastes, therefore a few of us older members took upon themself the task of building a place were we could have meaningfull, rational and adult conversations about the game, and everything attached to it (history, specifications, etc).

With time the place has grown to become THE place to argue flight sims and other games, along with our very own version of the good old off topic Pilot Lounge, wich so many of us had missed.
We have called it simply: Pilot Lounge Reloaded.
Our rules are simple! There are no rules, other than beeing rational in what one does and talks about.
We enfrce freedom of speech fervorously, something that this forum, because of its ties to UBI cannot afford to give its members.

As for the plane choice issues, you can transfer IL2 single missions and static campaigns to FB/AEP http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I still get in FMB and design my own missions from time to time, once you get a handle on how the mission builder works (2-5 hours) you can run up an air to air in about 15-20 minutes or a full "historical" mission in about 90 minutes. Getting the balance exactly to your satisfaction can stretch it out to several hours/days though if you're really particular about how the missions should feel.

Well, I bought IL-2 fairly late. I'd played the demo first released on my old system but I had joystick and minor performance problems. I'd not considered it again until several months ago when I bought it. But my online mates were playing and showing off FB so I bought it a couple of months ago and AEP as soon as it was released.

Enough of the back-story, suffice to say that I've not been playing FB/AEP long enough to feel the need to go back to IL-2 (if that ever happens). I've lent IL-2 to a mate and plan on giving it to another for his birthday later in the year.
