View Full Version : Overcoming sim difficulty with hardware

The Matrix isn't going to happen because I'll go 'malitia' on the inventors. I'll be the guy on the grassy knoll the day they say "Here, hook this to your head".

So whats the pushback on the point of external guages? If this stuff was cheap and modular, wouldn't you want it, instead of wasting 75% of your monitor to display difficult-to-read virtual cockpits?

If virtual cockpits were no longer necessary, how much more eye-candy do you think we could get in our sims? Do you think it would be possible to refine the vis. on a monitor to the point that icons are no longer needed?

I'll bite http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If they were 'affordable' I'd go for it, but then we are not too far off from a new generation of display panels that will revolutionise the way we see our alternate realities.

Coupled with more powerful hardware the icon issue will go too, as the displays will be larger and, being flexible, can wrap around us http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Or you could rephrase it to "Please Oleg, give us APIs to connect a lot of nice gauges and gizmos to BOB".

I would then considering building a pit myself http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No way am I accepting this.

The point of this thread was not to start an anti-icons campaign or anything like that. I'm just curious about how people see sims in the future, and I really don't appreciate being called a troll by the likes of Buzz.

Comments are made all the time about future matrix-like technologies.. all of which I am completely against.

I think technology can be used to make sims more realistic, but I believe it will have to be done with hardware, not software.

Thats just how I see it.

I think I agreed with you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Although the software will have to change to take advantage of the advances in hardware, but it will be hardware that drives it.

Like yourself I don't really hold a view on icons, they have their place.

But improvements that increase the realism of a simulation will come, and larger displays that 'simulate' the view will help.
Processing hardware, both graphics and CPU, will have to scale to keep the data flowing to our panoramic multi displays.

By the time they have a matrix like gizmo baldie I suspect neither you nor I will be around to be plugged in. And the grassy knoll may have gone too!

I'm reasonably sure that I'll alwayse prefer the 'onscreen' cockpit (though I'm all for larger/better/wraparound type screens) for the simple reason that I'll never be able to build as high a quality cockpit as Oleg has already done, and even if I could build a perfect simulation of a FW190 cockpit, exactly what the @#$% would I do when I fly the P-40? Two words: Immersion Killer.

What BoB isn,t going to be virtual reality compatible? Geez, better be no more that $20.

i am NO fan of "cockpit off"

i just want a 30 inch TFT thats is totally viewable & has no blurring & even smaller pixels than is currently possible

Bah, we already have that.. It's called a mirror. What most people think of themselves is definitely an alternate to what they see in the mirror, if they really look.

My gawd, this is a difficult question: http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Do I want better video hardware in the future, or do I not? I haven't been in such a dilemma since someone asked, whether it would be nice with a Spitfire in FB.

After intense and careful consideration, I have to conclude that yes, I do want the hardware of the future.

I would like to see some hard/software improvements.

First I'd like to have a larger FOV.
This means multiple monitors or a really big one and high resolution.
The videocard must be able to support it.

Second I'd like sims to allow other software to read data from the sim.
People could then build their own cockpit and feed the instruments with data from the game.

I wouldn't want virtual cockpits to go away.
They add a bit of realism; you can't see through the bottom of your plane.
They also offer a reference to let me know where I'm looking.

Perhaps cockpit and external detail could be configured seperately?
By setting the cockpit to low detail (no textures maybe?) you could increase the external detail.
As long as the instruments are readable (in the virtual cockpit or homebuilt cockpit) the virtual cockpit doesn't need a lot of detail for the game.

I do find it interesting to see how the cockpits look though.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Here I thought I was being mellow, and just playing around. I must be hanging at CWOS too much.
