Nikki Marie has been cosplaying for 5 years now. Some of you may know her better as Imaginary Costume. She recently debuted her phenomenal Shao Jun costume, so naturally, we wanted to get to know her better with a few questions.

When and how did you get into Cosplay/Costume making?

I first came across Cosplay while I was studying Fine Arts at college in 2010. I wanted to create a Costume piece that resembled a character from a game, and thus, that was my introduction to costume play.

I then took my costume piece to Linz, Austria, where I attended my first Anime/Manga convention called MACOnvention. That experience kick started my love for costuming and I went on to study a BA in Historical and Performance Costume for Stage and Screen at University. It was at this point that I expanded my knowledge in sewing, creating an 1860's Crinoline dress, 1690's Menswear, and 1940's Burlesque. For my final year, I designed and created a submersible Mermaid costume. As I also wanted to incorporate Cosplay into my study, I snuck in Ezio Auditore's robes from Assassin's Creed II, making them as historically accurate as possible by limiting myself to materials and methods available in the time period.

What was the first character you portrayed?

The first character I portrayed was Guilmon from Digimon. This costume was very different from what I was used to making but I wanted to challenge myself. At the time, two of my friends were learning to sew and I ended up using the costume to teach them. I don’t think I’d make another costume like this one, it was way too hot to wear! I prefer to make historical costume pieces.

Any notable accomplishments in the world of Cosplay? (Competition wins, features)

In April 2014, I attended the Scarborough Sci-Fi Convention. There, I entered my first masquerade with my Ezio Auditore costume and won first place.

A few months later in July, I went to the London Anime & Gaming Convention where I also entered the masquerade with my Ezio costume. I won the Assassin’s Creed category and was given an Ezio print (signed by Roger Craig Smith himself) by the Ubisoft UK Field Team.

In September 2014, I debuted my Arno Dorian costume at the annual Eurogamer Expo. While watching the Assassin’s Creed Unity showcase, the Ubisoft UK Field Team recognized me and asked if I would like to participate in a few upcoming events they had planned.

I ended up supporting the Assassin's Creed Unity midnight launch dressed as Arno, at GAME’s flagship store in London. I also attended the Unity day one launch at a GAME store in Birmingham wearing my Shao Jun costume.

I then got invited to an Assassin's Creed themed party in London. There was music, Assassin’s Mead on the drinks menu, cake and other Cosplayers dressed as Assassin’s and Templar’s. It was an awesome experience!

Last February, I went back to the Anime & Gaming Convention. This time the Ubisoft UK Field Team requested to have two of my costumes on display (Arno Dorian and Ezio Auditore) at their booth.

It’s been a busy and exciting year! Here are some video highlights.

What drew you to Shao Jun?

It was around the time between completing my Arno costume and the start of Eurogamer Expo, that I got the urge to make another Assassin's Creed costume. I originally considered “gender switching” an Assassin, but quickly decided that I wanted to cosplay a strong female lead within the franchise. After posting on an Assassin's Creed fan page asking for ideas, Shao Jun came back as an almost unanimous choice. Assassin's Creed Chronicles was then announced the next day and upon seeing the concept artwork and trailer, I was sold! Her Assassin outfit is beautiful! In fact, on my drive back up from Eurogamer Expo, I bought the fabric, started on the costume and had it completed within a week.

Were you familiar with Assassin's Creed before you saw Embers or the Chronicles China announcement?

In order to study Ezio’s costume I had to play through Assassin's Creed II and also found myself playing through Assassin's Creed III (I love Connor). This was the first time I picked up an Assassin’s Creed game and actually played them myself. Prior to that, I used to watch my brother play through the games while I gathered inspiration for costumes.

Which is your favorite character in the Assassin’s Creed universe?

I'm in love with all of the costume designs in the Assassin's Creed franchise and I find them so inspiring. If I had my way I’d make all of the costumes, but my favorite character primarily for her costume design and origin, would have to be Shao Jun.
