As far as I know there is only this one in use Civilian wise and possibly a couple still floating around in the Russian Airforce. It was visiting here today so I took a picture for you all of her departing, It is an AN 22 and is the largest contra-rotating Turbo Prop Aircraft in the world, thankfully she has taken up a less sinister role as a freighter these days, but if you wonder why the curious Tail layout, well this bird could carry more cargo Externally in a tube than it could internally, It was original designed to transport Russian ICBM's and rockets around the USSR in a tube on the outside hanging right out past the two tail fins.

Cool! I work on C-130 turbos in the USAF. Interestingly, the intake seems to be 360 degrees around the cowling, right behind the spinner. The F-16, of course, copied the T-56 intake design of the C-130. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Good hunting,

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

I love these big freighters. When I was a kid we went to see the Mriya with Buran, the soviet space shuttle, attached on top. I wonder if I still have those pictures, will have to look around.

I'm confused about the livery. What country is this bird painted in Tony?

"U" would lead me to believe Ukraine... but the stuff painted on the tail has me wondering.

Ukrainian markings, the stuff on the tail is the Antonov Design Bureau logo.

"Approximately 70 have been built, of which approximately 50 have been operated in Aeroflot colours. A few dozen remain in commercial and military service."
