View Full Version : attacking ships

I'm currently doing the norht and south campaign and finding it very hard to attack groups of ships

no matter what tactics I use i keep getting hit by flack and I've tried everything I can think of!

the ships even seem to start shooting at me beyond visual range!

Approach the enemy ship from its side. Make little turns, sway from side to side evading enemy fire, and if you get close enough, drop the bomb(s) about 50-200 meters before you hit the ship and pull up.

Train enough and soon it will be a piece of cake http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

you will find that if there big ships like the tirpitz, marat, destroyers etc they have an extremely large gun range, best way i've found to do it is get low and fast(really low!! about 5 feet) wait till ur about 10 meters away then drop ur bombs they'll skip along the surface and hit the ship hopefully destroying it or damaging it, just remember to bank hard!!right/left or pull up hard!so u don't get caught in the bang!

still having trouble, especailly when i get close as my framerate dies should i go in low?

if ur frame rates are too low try dropping resolution, or if that fails get hig h and dive bomb remember to throttle back or u'll rip the wings off or wont be able to pull out go to about 2500 drop on them when ur straight over them try and get angle of about 70 degrees (just guess) when u get to about 1000 release and pull out and away P38 or stuka is best for this, or just dump flaps if in another plane

Low and fast is the way to go. Broadside gives the biggest target but has anyone else tried from astern? It is a smaller target, but the ship can't get as many guns on target. The battleships can take a lot of torpedo hits from astern before any really noticeable results. I haven't tried it out on a moving ship yet just some stationary practice

if u want to survive on a ship attack run, speed is essential. come in high and do a swooping dive to near 'water skimming' or the guns will get a lock on u fast. remember to add at least 1-1.5 second bomb delay on it or they'll explode on contact with the water.
the aaa cruiser's can be sunk in 1 dive bomb attack with the p-63. use the fab bombs, zero delay. but u'll need to come in high, drop em, and pull out before the bombs get there, or the blast might get u too.
when the bridge of the ship is getting large in the cockpit, drop em. the delay set will keep the bombs from exploding untill they either hit, or they run out of energy to continue to skip on the water.

I find that no delay works best with bombs, when you try to water skip them or drop them on the broadside of the **** they clunk into the side of the **** and the delay starts then, so they sink and do less/no damage than if you had no delay. This has been my experience but I might be wrong.

landed several miles inland on the crimea QMB map with a cokked engine and was still getting strafed by the ship AA .. must have had spotters somewhere in the shrubbery http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

slightly off topic but remember that torpedoes have a simplistic model and can be dropped from any altitude at any dive angle and still work

That is correct.I dropped a torpedo from 3000 m and killed a cargo ship. How nice is that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

All good advice here
Try to learn how to "Skip Bomb"
Fuses set to "0" BTW
There is a training video in the movie forum I think. Once mastered its deadly

check the movies makers forum for two short films by dart on how to skip bomb ships, first one deals with small and medium ships and the second deals with larger ships, both are extremely well done and quite humorous too, if u follow the tactics he demonstrates your skip bombing and evasion will be much more effective good luck

Theres also a track in game you can view i think it's called topmast, it's basic but it gives u the idea S! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

its the one i use online, call me a cheat if you will. while all the blue side are lining up he-111s with torps or trying to dive bomb with the stuka (both effective, but very vulnerable to attack) you just need to fly high over the ships with a 109f4 and a 500kb bomb, choose target, make a very fast dive, level out rushing the ship, drop bomb, pull up and wait for the bang... but dont release too soon, or too late, other wise the bomb will either sink before it hits the ship, or skip right over it! oh, and fuses definately must be set at 0, other wise the bomb sinks and goes off under the ship, making a big splash and not doing much else

was doing some work on this last night

Astern seems to kill em quicker (possibly hiting engine?)

Fuses definately set to zero

Would not recomend larger than 500's or 2 250's as the blast can damage you if you dont pull away quick enough

Generally I find you need to Wait till you see the rigging before release or just as ship starts to dissappear under your nose. 'Course if ship has weapons then you need to get below the deck line as the guns should have a harder time getting an angel on you then.

Turpitz or any of the bigger ships need more than one attacker or you are gona bear the brunt of all that fire power.

Great fun but generally its suicide.

attacking battleships will put a huuuuuuuuge hit on framerate. hopefully they'll do something about that in pf. everytime i've ever tryin to come in flat with no delay, the bombs send me into orbit the hard way. for me, a 1 sec delay works wonders as long as i release at the right time. timing is everything. pin-point diving (stuka style) i havent quite figured that out without gettin raped by the ships guns. seems with the new stuka's, the bombs kick off by themselves. and those 2 heavy 2000#'ers...effective, but u need bomb delay or u'll be toast. hit the right spot with the full load of p-38 hvars and bye bye aaa boat. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gifI like to use the P-38 with a couple 500 pounders & Rockets.
I gain some altitude away from the ship... about 400m and come in on a slight angle that keeps my speed up... dropping to 50m above the water.
With the P-38 you have to watch out for gaining to much speed ... because you'll lose control from compression.
But I've taken out Destroyers and survived with slight damage... once with just one engine after being hit on the first pass I knock out a Destroyer with 4 more passes... flying was a Bit rough... all though I made it in for a landing after also. Rare were occasions that pilots survived flying straight to the ships (unless they had element of surprise).
As an individual, you don't stand a chance. As part of large group, you may get away with not being hit once.

Try using other friendly planes for attracting AA fire, and while they're doing it, go in full speed, low, sway a litlle, and after releasing weapons maneuvre as low as possible.

Besides, AA and AI bomber gunner accuracy have been reduced in half compared to the real thing because of many players complaining.

It would be nice if, like in real life, fighters could be used for eliminating AA before attack planes attack.

There are two major methods for attacking large ships; dive bombing and low level attacks. Which you choose is up to you be each has their own weaknesses and strengths.

The most survivable method is high alt dive bombing. The major drawback is its lack of accuracy, you may not hit your target unless you aim perfectly. Remember a ship is a MOVING target and you have to adjust you aim accordingly. Lining up the bow is probably the best aimimg point, maybe even slightly on front depending on your release point.

For large ships i try to approach from the stern or bow, circle up to about 4000m then enter a shallow (10-15 degrees) dive to build up speed. At 3000-3500m i level out slightly into a 5 degree dive then as i approach the target i fly just a little over it then invert and roll my back into the ship. Vertical at about 2500m, aim by 2000m and release by 1500m. Alieron 90 degrees so to be perpendicular to your target then slowly pull up into a 20-25 degree dive, keep your nose pointed at the water and then level off at 50 or so meters, hopefully at full WEP and at maximum speed. I do this in a Jug so my initial speed is usually 350kph (indicated), rollover is at 400-425, release at 500-600 and then build up as much speed (700+ sometimes) as i can in a shallow dive away from my target. Bomb delay is usually at 2.5 sec but it can vary with whatever you like.

Other attack method is the low level, high speed attack. Usually done from the side but stern attacks offer greater survivability as you are the focus of less guns.

Gain alt and speed then enter a medium dive, aiming to hit the water about 3000m from the ship. Keep your nose pointed at the water until the last second then try to level out and stay low and fast. Keep below 20m if you can and above 450-500kmph (600+ is perfect but almost unachieveble). I usually attack with a 15 degree offset from the stern as i think this gives the best tradeoff between vulnerability to AAA and target size. Set delay to about 2 seconds and when you reach about 400m from the ship perform a quick pop up to 50m alt and drop your bombs while completely level, otherwise they will just nosedive into the sea. After the pop up and release i angle to just miss the stern of the ship and then run at high speed and low alt, again perpendicular to the ship.

Follow the number one rule of GA pilots and dont get greedy, one pass should be all you take.

There are other methods of attack as well. High speed shallow lob releases work but only if you have really good aim and dont care if you survive. These are medium alt meduim accuracy attacks that put you right into the defensive envelope of most ships in the game. Stay high or very low around cruisers and battleships or you will be very unlikely to survive.

Hope this ramble helps http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

oh, dive bombed a ship last night with an 1800kg job... amazed i hit it, i had bomb release set for 700 (foolhardy but a sunk ship dont fire back) 1.8 tons of high explosive does the job.

also, i find bomb skipping quite safe- dive from high enough, your going so fast the defensive fire doesnt generally hit you. mix that with the fact the 190f4 is well armoured... p47 makes an excellent allied equivalent, due to its survivability and phenomenal dive characteristics.

In the FMB, set up a situation with a large friendly ship and practice bomb skipping/dive bombing, etc. Alternatively, in the QMB, select the Crimea map with the target set to 'none' there's both enemy and friendly ships there.
