View Full Version : Can we get proper 3D Picture-in-Picture Scopes?

Scopes that have magnification such as the ACOG are not represented correctly in this game, the area outside the scope is zoomed in as well.
What it looks in the game:

Here's an example of a 3D PiP sniper scope in Red Orchestra 2:

This technology does have a slight performance impact, but since Rainbow Six takes place in highly dense and small maps, it shouldn't be as much of a problem.

Another solution with a smaller performance hit would be to render the outside area of the scope, without zooming it, at a lower resolution and mask it with a depth of field effect.

Example from Battlefield 2 Alpha Mod:

With this being a hardcore tactical game at heart, i think it's important to properly represent weapon optics.

Peripheral vision should be present when using magnified optics which obviously is important since the maps will be relatively small.

You get more precision and a larger target to shoot at, but there's a trade-off (just like in real life) since the difference in zoom between your scope and the world itself makes it more challenging to maneuver the weapon and makes you play and move around the environment in a different manner.

100% agree, on any optic with a zoom component I'd like to see this being a thing. Developers, please implement this!

I've sent a message to electr1cpanda on Reddit, hopefully he sees it.

I'm also really hoping to hear something from the developers here.

This solution gives you peripheral vision when using magnified optics which obviously is important since the maps will be relatively small.

There's a trade-off (just like in real life) since the difference in zoom between your scope and the world itself makes it more challenging to manoeuver the weapon and makes you play and move around more differently.

It's all in the details, I'm all for it. Great post and observation
