A lot has happened in the Air Racing world over the past couple of months, so I thought I would fill you all in with some details:

We had two races this past weekend, flying Friday night for pilots on the west side of the Atlantic, and Saturday for pilots from Europe, Asia and points east. This is the first time we broke into two races because of the number of interested racers, and because of the "global" reach of air racing.

Additionally, we have instituted league seasons with a points system for tracking racers. We just started the Summer League and currently Kvarium, Earnhardt and BlitzPig_Raven hold the top three spots. The Spring League, in June/July, was won by Kvarium, BlitzPig_Rivet and Skiri-ki.

Points are awarded for first (30 points), second (20 points) and third (10 points) placers. All placers must land to earn their points. We fly almost all of the single-prop planes, and occasionally you will see a multi-engine race or a jet race.

If this all sounds interesting to you, and you want to try racing, come out and fly with us at one of the unscheduled practice sessions at HL (usually evenings in the US). There are usually informal practices happening ewery other night now at HL, just look for the pilots who are in the league and join up with them.

Or you could join us for one of our sanctioned events and race for points, check the schedule at il2airracing.com for races and times.

Additionally, you can download race courses at the website, just click on the logo below and go to the course download section. You can then practice in private and get used to the courses on your own.

See you at the races!

I had fun with you guys last night, even won a race (courtesy of the leaders colliding with each other /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

Anyone interested in this who hasn't tried it should do so, just be sure to learn as much about low altitude engine management on as many planes as you can. Particularly on some of the Axis aircraft, if you don't understand prop pitch, WEP etc., you wont be in the running /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Guys, you have to see this Air Racing video. Hats off to Earnhardt for an incredible job...well done! Check out his newest Air Racing video pitting Kvarium against himself. Some very cool full video shots and great music, it is worth every minute of download time. Its 31MB...

Thanks Earnhardt for the great work!

There's a link at the top of each il2airracing page that tells you the code to use.

Go to the link, highlight the code, and copy it [ctrl]c.
Just set it up in your sig:

Log in to these message boards
Click "MY PREFERENCE"

At the bottom, right hand side there's a box for the signature ...

Just paste the code in there ([ctrl]v), and appy your change.

It is worth posting a blank, no text message ... and reading it ... just to check the signature works.

Nope, no bullets at all. Actually, we race with loadouts set to "Empty" so the plane is as light as possible, to go as fast as possible.

Now I will say that traditionally the last race of the night is what we call "guns hot" where we race and shoot each other down to get an advantage. Many times only one racer is left flying at the end of these shootout races.

Imagine NASCAR with machine guns...

the gun races are always fun to watch, even more fun to be a part of. if anyone hasn't tried racing yet, give it a go. you won't be disappointed.

On the ubi side, I was running races for a while, but tired of those who:
1) Could not, would not, did not read the brief. Many times while racing I would be queried as to rules, or they show up flying a 262 while we are in the middle of a race with Hurris for example.
2) Shooters. Once again, they show up and just start blowin people away. Have to stop flyin and boot, only to have them show up again a minute later calling me names and resuming their attack.
3) Those with no ground handling skills WHATSOEVER. Patience is indeed a virtue here as 1 or 2 fellows repeatedly crash into those already lined up, or into others in the spawn area, respawn and blow up again repeatedly ad nauseum.
4) Those who insist on flying THEIR plane rather than the winners choice, or the plane chosen by the host for competition.

Now it's been a while since I hosted races for the above reasons. I also notice TX-tornado, who used to also host them, has been absent a while, perhaps for the same reasons. The only answer is perhaps a closed, password entry room, but that excludes the n00b's that have yet to experience air racing and thats not fair, to them or those more experienced and looking for new fod....ahem, new converts to the different side of FB. I have 6 courses just sitting doing nothing in my hard drive, and will maybe run them out this Friday. But if the same old same old occurs, back they'll go to molder up a while again.

Radkiller,

We have made progress on all of the issuse you mentioned. Of course, being a public forum, we get all kinds. And we also want newbies to fly, so passwording has not been used that much. If there are passwords, we generally post them at il2airracing.com in the comments section. This is not the securest way, but keeps the ignorant hacks away, cuz they have no idea anyways what il2airracing.com is.

My hosting experience has been successful because I employ an informal "three strike rule". If someone breaks the rules three times, then I kick/boot. If they have the chutzpa (sp?) to come back after being kicked, I record their IP from the log and then add an access-list "deny" line in my router, which keeps them out of my server permanently.

Seems to work. Come join us on Friday and have some fun!

So, after all that time, Air Racing is not only still active, but greater than ever!

I can remember the very first days of Air Racing, when USMC Tailspin brought the first real maps to us... I think Raven was there too. It was back when the Yak was still the uncatchable Uber-Racer, thx to its engine durability, high speed and good handling.
Yeah, the old days of IL-2 Sturmovik... oh well, I'm sentimental again.

Anyway, it's a real honor to meet you again, USMC Tailspin!

Guys, keep the races running, I'll definitely join them soon, just to see if I still can cut some corners hard while fighting for the victory in a fast, close-flying speed-o-mania!

Future,

formerly known as JLG-Future, FutureHWG, Future{Tem} and FutureTem

I wonder if TAZ_GAIA and Smokejaguar also still hang around somewhere here....
