Hey guys, need your advise on ATI drivers ... no, I'm not trolling ... searched the boards here and didn't get a definite answer.

I've ran only Catalyst drivers on my 9800XT since it came out ... currently the 4.7's. I was getting ready to load the 4.8 or 4.9 betas. Well, yesterday I was talking with the guys at work and they went on about the Omegas and their install aspects. I've heard lots of good stuff about Omegas drivers over the years ... here and at other forums.

Now I've gotten used to the "driver ritual" with the Cats (uninstall, run cleaner, check registry, ritual sacrifice of old vid card to the AGP Gods... hit install, gnashing of teeth ... etc), but they tell me they don't have to uninstall anything ... the newer Omegas load over the old drivers. OK ... if thats the case, sounds good to me.

Problem is none of them play AEP as much as I do (a couple fire it up every once in a while ... the rest not at all). Since its my main fix daily I'd like to avoid the aforementioned gnashing of teeth part.

So, if I may ... here's my big question. Whats your guys experience? How well do the Omegas run FB? Do they run Perfect as well or better. Do they really install right on top of the old driver? Do I need to up my sacrifice to a MoBo AND a vid card, maybe an old IBM Server ... my kids baseball card collection???? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Any advice would be more than appreciated .... thanks much, clayman.

I always use Omegas. I find the framerate to be noticeably better. They're actually ATI drivers that have been tweaked...kind of a "hotrod" so to speak. If you have an ATI driver installed, just uninstall the control panel from "add and remove programs"...then install the Omega right over the ATI driver...reboot and you're ready to go. If you don't like them, you can always go back.

Thanks Mackane. The framerates are better ... great!

How about the install on top of themselves? Unlike the Cats ... is it true that the newer Omegas can be installed over old Omegas. Don't mind doing the normal driver install ... but if the Omegas can do that ... it's a very quick way to test new drivers.

Been trying to get to his site all night but keep getting a "page cannot be displayed" error ... even when linking from DriverHeaven.

Thanks again for the reply.

Yeah.
Once the Omegas are installed, you never need to uninstall the driver or control panel to use the latest Omega...they install right over the old ones...and vice versa...older ones will install over newer ones with no problem.
During installation, if prompted, always click "NO TO ALL".

I use omegas with my 9800 pro and love them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/heart.gif

I particularly like the way the drivers are packaged... although I always do a "clean install" of the latest versions - force of habit I guess - they even give you a version of Driver Cleaner to root out all the old stuff.... class http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif Didn't know you could just "install over".

Cant wait for the 4.9 based omegas (need to get me a copy of Doom 3 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif)

clayman, just out of interest, what card do you have?

S!

I do a clean install every few drivers...don't really know if it helps but I figure, why not.
The 4.8's have been working nicely on my 9700pro. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Love the Omegas! I think the only pre-install requirement is to uninstall the old ATI Control panel. I normally do the Driver Cleaner/Cab Cleaner ritual, force of habit too http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

If you ever decide to get rid of the Omegas, don't forget to uninstall Radlinker (over-clocking utility that comes with the Omega drivers), as you will get an error on startup, if you don't.

All the best, Don

Many thanks to all of you ... exactly what I wanted to hear.

Mackane ... thanks much. I will probably do the same down the road ... do a clean install every so often (old habits do die hard alright). Didn't think about the "No To All" on the next install ... thanks for the tip.

ASM 1 ... I have a 9800XT running stock on a 3.2 P4 / P4C800 D / 1 gig OZC 3700 / 120GB SATA Maxtor DMP. You know I have always use DC (even back in my NVidia days). Cool to see Omega included it. Pacettid ... if I ever switch out down the road I'll remember. Thanks to both of you for your help and positive reflections on the Omegas.

So guys ... got home from work today ... read your replies ... checked out Omegas site and it opened http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif! Downloaded the 2.5.67's (4.8) and been tweaking and running them for 3 hours. Run great ... and no gnashing of teeth and all! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Again ... thanks to you all. I'm here every day but don't post often. You guys we're not only helpful and positive but very professional as well ... hats off to you all.

Regards - clayman
