I personally would like to see Icon settings like on Warclouds.

I don't like icons..Immersion killers number one, imho.

But enable padlock with very short range for us non Track IR users.

Never discuss with stupid people.
They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I like everything as is except 1k friendly icons, thx for the effort http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

Did anyone see that or was it just me?

I can't check as I get ping kicked (I'm in Australia) but I thought HUD was a client side setting.....

Great potential! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Just my opinion but I would further limit ground objects and get rid of artillery tracers as these killed my framerate on your server.

Friendly icons on for 500m or 1k to help IDing.

Yesterday when I was flying there, most of the pilots in both sides (about 80%) had negative scores for mistaken friendly fire. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I myself downed a friendly Spitfire http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif by hitting it from about 500m thinking it was a jerry chasing a teammate, when it was the other way around.

Distance coupled with time of the day (map was in a late afternoon setting) helped all the friendly fire going around.

Though I agree with those that say Icons are an immersion killer, in this case they should be allowed but only for friendlies and at very short range.

P.S. My apologies to the Spit driver I downed by mistake last nite, I swear that at the right angle and lighting the CW Spit looks like a Dora http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif

It is nice to see a cockpit-on server on HL, the more the better. Personally I have had some of the best times on servers with no icons at all. It was part of WWII, identifying what you were shooting at. With a little bit of practice you can tell the silhouettes and shapes of all the planes. It is something I enjoy having to ID planes for myself instead of having them dragging a banner around that says what they are.
Also this defuses a large part of the padlock debate. When icons are disabled, padlock enemy will lock onto friendly and enemy aircraft. So you do not know what you are locked onto unless you can ID it yourself. Padlock is much nicer to use in a dogfight than the hatswitch I use on full real servers. I understand how it can be abused as "pad-look". When you learn how to use padlock well it is as good as track IR or anything out there. If there were no icons and it was limited to one kilometer, padlock would be perfect.

For now, I am for Full Real servers, no icons, with or without padlock. The instant you have icons on a server, even friendly only, that server takes a big step toward being arcade.

I am for there being servers for every level of pilot so everyone can have fun. I have been flying this sim online since the old il2 days, well over two years. What I have seen is the smartest and best pilots, fly on the full real servers with no icons. And anyone that flies on servers with these settings is in for some hard work but is rewarded with getting really good really fast. After flying on full real type servers long enough to become proficient at it, going back to wonder-woman/icon arrow servers seems like you are playing pac-man or galaga. There is none of the problems real pilot's in WWII faced on these servers. Manually looking all around, being surprised from out of the sun or from a blind spot, and IDing what you shoot at.
I like playing pac-man and galaga sometimes, and for the fun of it, or to cater to a friends needs I might fly with them on an arcadish server. But when I want to have fun with the il2 series and have maybe just a slight taste of the stress of how combat might have been in WWII, I go il2 full real. These servers are in decline lately on HL. I am thankful that when I started on HL that there were some around, full of cool pilots that gave me encouragement, that I could get hooked on and learn in. After flying the il2 series on HL for a very long time, the part of il2 that seems to approach a full blown art, are the server and pilots who are the Full Real Faithful. IN the past I have blasted non-padlock servers, but I apologize, either way they are not better or worse just different. And The hard core Full real guys deserve respect if any sim pilot does anywhere. Blah blah blah i could rattle on forever. Thanks for your time,

I don't mind no-icons just as long as there is no kick for negative score.

i toasted a couple of spits with my pony last time i was there. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

btw, icon settings should be the same for both friendly and enemy. uneven icon setting is so arcadish.

I agree that the ping kick is set a bit too low.

I like the settings you had the first day the best, which was icons for both sides. The reason being it helps to promotes more fighting than without them. But friendly icons on only, with or without padlock would be fine too.

Hi_IKP Hawk. Are you just having problems with tracers and artillery killing your framerates on the Birds Of Prey server or is it on other servers too. So far, most of clients that fly on Birds Of Prey are getting smooth service with zero lag and no loss of performance on their rigs. Also what kind of Video card are you using???? and what are the specs of your rig. This could help us determine if it is the server. Right now I'm betting that it isn't the server but this is without knowing anything about your rig. The Birds Of Prey Server is a Beast of a server and it is not even breaking a sweat.

Its a sweet server. My input, for what its worth, is leave the settings as is. We dont need another warclouds. Friendly icons for short distance might be condusive to teamplay but its your call.

Played in the server and loved it. All those flyers and no lag. I had 1 green bar the whole game. As far as settings I like No enemy icons and limited friendly icons. (because I dont like being shot by people on my team) GreaterGreen ran settings like this and had great success and a strong following.

I completely agree. WC has the best settings going. The very limited icons make up for the poor resolution we all experience due to the 2d monitor.

I don't want to start yet another icon debate here, but I'd like to ask why don't you guys that want some sort of icons just go ahead and play on WarClouds and let those of us who don't want icons have a server we can enjoy too. You know variety! I voted for leaving the settings the same but, to make it absolutely perfect, if you took the mini map path off vulching would be more difficult (people would actually have to navigate to the enemy base) and thus somewhat more acceptable. Anyway, many thanks to Birds of Prey.
