the following notes reflect my tests done about an hour ago, in QMB.

The aircraft was a P-51D-20NA. No stores, full fuel. Rad closed. Every difficulty 'on' except I kept the speedbar.

All tests were started at 10,000m. I attempted to keep approximately 40* of dive angle in all tests. I paused at various times to note altitude, speed, and aircraft condition.

test 1)

10K meters- start, begin dive.
6K meters- buffeting begins
4K meters- 850 kph shown on speedbar. Performed a gradual pull-out, not taking care to be overly gentle. Slight blackout. No other problems. No explosion

test 2)

10K meters- start, begin dive.
5K meters- buffet begins. Speedbar shows 870 kph. Air speed indicator shows 550 mph. Normal pull-out performed. Quick blackout, relaxed pressure on stick, came out of black out instantly. No other problems, no explosion

test 3)

10K meters- start, begin dive
6k- buffet
4k- HEAVY buffet. Airspeed indicator shows 600 mph.
3500 meters- 600+ mph indicated (shake made it hard to read). Speedbar shows 980 kph. Port wingtip breaks off. Starboard aileron comes off. MG jammed.
1000 meters- lost starboard wing, and rudder
450 meters- 675 mph indicated. 1090 kph shown on speedbar. No explosion
100meters- 1100 kph shown on speedbar. No explosion. Controls seem reversed, but without wings to speak of or a rudder, who knows.
0 meters- impact. Explosion expected and noted. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

test 4)

10K meters- start, begin dive
4500 meters- 650 mph indicated. HARD pull-out, maximum backpressure on stick. Fairly quick blackout. Equally quick recovery. No explosion.

Why can't I make the Mustang explode??

I just keep her under 500 mph in a dive. Over 500 mph dont know if she will explode or not. Some times she does some times she dont. Why? I have not a clue. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Well, seems to me under 550 mph is ok http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But under what conditions will it explode mid-flight? It has never done it to me once. I have tested this over a dozen times and not one single mid-flight explosion.

I read a lot about it, but why can't I replicate this spontaneous explosion? Obviously some folks have seen it happen...but I can't make it happen and I'm trying to do it.

Good idea, nice documentation. I've never experienced the blowup mentioned on other threads, in either the B or C. But, like your tests, I never put the a/c in a vertical dive. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I haven't ever tried to dive the P-51D from great heights like that. But then agian I don't do that with any AC. I dunno if it's a bug or not. But Pilots deffinatly said that you would black out long before the wings would ever fly away on ya.

I just did a quick test in the QMB after reading about this on the forum to see for myself. And I got the B & C models exploding after a few dive attempts (before blackout Gs were not that high). The D model I was not able to explode (yet, hopefuly it doesn't have this problem). It does seem like a bug.
