What are the chances of having all the ingredients to replay this battle in the game.

owlwatcher, I suspect the ships will be there, or at least close enough to recreate the heroic actions of Taffy III. However, the real hitch might just be that there will not be the ability to lay smoke. That alone would just about destroy the scenario as the DD's and DE's ability to lay heavy smoke was a crucial factor in the outcome of the battle. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. All the best, LongHorn

Was hoping , would be fun.
Need the map
Depth charges ( to bomb the ships with)
Just was studying it.
Would like to replay the action so I could get a better understanding of it.

If you are interested in this subject, may I humbly suggest a very good book called

"The last stand of the Tin Can sailors" by an author with a last name of Hornfischer. (can't remember his first and I'm at work)

Another real eye opener of the war in the Pacific and specifically just how close a thing the battle of Midway was, is the book
"The A Team" Which is a VERY in depth look at the behind the scenes goings on before and during the battle of midway.

Loki- You must be some kind of mind reader! I kept trying to get "Tin Can Sailors" on hold from the library and ended up picking it up at B&N's. The "A Team" book sits on my PTO shelve as we speak. All the best, LongHorn

Done my reading on the subjects.
Thank you for posting the books
Have replayed Midway.
Best I found to replay Midway is
Midway is rather easy to play out. Game wise

The battle of Samar requires alot of detailing to play out.
Rain squalls
Smoke as mentioned above.
First kamikazess
Ship mounted torpedo action. Yet to see a game that can replay this well. At least with a computer.
Add the planes to the action.
This battle is most likly the hardest to recreate of any in the 2ndWW.

I knew I always liked you!......Any guy that
A) has a Library
B) has a collection of Military History
C) has a whole shelf dedicated to PTO.
Is alright by me!

Seriously though, the A-Team is a great read. Makes your really understand just how close a thing it really was. "For want of a nail..."

Second on that book, Loki. Perhaps the best read into the battle, ever! I especially loved the opening moments involving the first pilot to spot Kurita's Center Force. What do I do? What do I do?! One has to love the improvised use of depth charges on a heavy cruiser.

Somewhere in this forum, I posted all the individual combatants of both sides that participated in the battle, in the hopes that it might've gotten the attention of a dev. Just for future scenario editor reference in case it doesn't make it. Hope it helps.

Roger that Sakai! I have high hopes for the coming game, even though I doubt we will have all those battles in all the detail we would all love to see. I have high hopes because of the ardent interest of this community as well as a hope that the FMB will be much improved. These two things giving rise to a wealth of lovingly made high detail missions, not for the faint of heart or the hardware challenged ! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree. Any game is what the player makes of it. Missing some fine details here and there is always a shame, but the player's ability to compensate by immersion can, in my humble opinion, make up for such shortcomings. As to this particular scenario in the Battle Off Samar, the prospect of taking a swim by not adequately defending my mobile Combustable, Venerable, Expendable (the established CVE joke) airstrip will more than make up for such things as absent smoke screens (not saying that I wouldn't love it's inclusion, though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).
